About this property

Charming Farmhouse Villa, Private Pool, WiFi, 4G, 3.5 Hectares - Beynac, Sarlat

Villa Perigord is a charming limestone farmhouse villa located at the heart of the Dordogne valley in the village of Saint-Vincent-de-Cosse. It is set in 9 acres of beautiful land, in a peaceful and slightly elevated position, with views across the valley. The villa has a gorgeous 10m x 5m swimming pool, 4-bedrooms, a feature fireplace, 2 verandahs, a barbecue, WiFi, 4G and an enclosed garden - perfect for well-behaved dogs (we are very pet friendly). It is located just 2 miles from Beynac, one of the most beautiful villages in France, and 8 miles from the regional capital, and medieval marvel, Sarlat-la-Caneda.

OUTSIDE SPACE

Set in over 9 acres (3.7 hectares) of land, Villa Perigord enjoys sweeping south-facing views across the Dordogne valley. Approximately 1/2 an acre of the land comprises the villa, barn, garden and pool area. The garden is fully enclosed and is laden with Lavender and herbs. There are spectacular verandahs on both the north and south side of the villa. So, if you are looking for the ultimate choice for outdoor living you won't be disappointed. In good weather, you'll rarely be indoors.

To the north side of the villa the "wild" garden, comprising 3.7 acres, rises up the hillside towards the forested hilltops, which are abundant with wildlife. Look out for all the butterflies in spring and summer, owls, deer, hare and birds of prey (including eagles) circling on the thermals. Guests and their pets are free to wander through the wild garden and up the hillside, from where the views across the valley are spectacular. The fairytale Chateau Des Milandes can be seen just 1 mile to the south west, and often in high summer you'll see the magical sight of hot-air balloons drifting majestically along the valley.

Directly in front of the house is a 3.8 acre field, which we own, and to the side of that is a wonderful walnut grove. We own 48 walnut trees (the first 3 rows) and they are managed for us by the farmer that owns the rest of the walnut grove. You are free to wander through the field and to take a look at the walnut trees. It's probably best to keep your dogs on leads here though, as it is closer to the road.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

They say it’s all about the location and we truly believe there isn’t a better location in the Dordogne, at first glance a quiet and secluded spot just 750 metres from the Dordogne river and with extraordinary views across the valley. And yet, within 2 minutes drive there’s an award-winning bakery, a butchers, 2 restaurants, a hotel, a wine shop, a snack bar by the river, 2 kayak stations, and a take-away pizza joint.

Within 5 minutes drive there’s the exquisite village of Beynac, officially one of the most beautiful villages in France, with its imposing Chateau, quaint and cobbled streets, delightful boutique hotels and shops, and a number of Perigourdian restaurants, with one right on the riverside. And within 7 minutes there’s the fabulous and functional town of St Cyprien, with its Carrefour supermarket, bustling shops and restaurants and the legendary, not-to-be-missed, Sunday market. It's quite a big market, and on market day the buzz around the town is something else, with delightful aromas of roasting chickens, slow cooked pork and (more recently) Indonesion and Thai street food filling the air. Needless to say, there's an abundance of fresh produce including fruit and veg, wild mushrooms, fresh meat, cheese, charcuterie and, of course, foie gras.

And that’s not all. Within a 20 minute drive you have some of the most famous and most visited tourist attractions in France. The medieval town of Sarlat, the delightful riverside town of La Roque Gageac, the hilltop bastide of Domme, the amazing box gardens of Marqueyssac, the fortified Chateau de Castelnaud, the fairytale Chateau des Milandes (formerly home to the American icon and actress Josephine Baker) and, of course, dozens and dozens of fabulous restaurants serving some of the most gastronomic dishes to be found in France!

THE VILLA AND ROOM LAYOUT

[For floor plans, please see the last 2 images in the Photos section]

The villa itself has 4 bedrooms: 3 doubles (1 downstairs double bedroom) and 1 twin. One of the doubles is accessed through the twin so these two bedrooms are best suited to 3-4 children or possibly a couple with one or two babies. Of course 4 adults could easily occupy these 2 bedrooms if they know each other well! There are 2 bathrooms (one upstairs with a shower/bath and one downstairs with an enclosed shower and separate bath) and there are 2 separate toilets (one upstairs, one downstairs).

The kitchen/diner is the fulcrum of the cottage, with its huge open fire place and stunning dining table (made from an old barn door!). There’s a modern fridge-freezer and stainless steel electric oven, as well as a gas hob. There are 2 compact dishwashers (because a full-sized dishwasher doesn’t quite fit under the tiled concrete worktop!) but this does mean if you’re feeling ultra lazy you can get away without unloading the dishwasher if you do alternate cycles! You will most likely spend most or all of your meals dining under the huge south-facing verandah, with its stone BBQ and enclosed front garden – and of course spectacular views over the Dordogne valley.

The cosy living room contains 2 sumptuous and bespoke 3-seater sofas and a flat-screen LED TV on the wall – with English TV courtesy of FreeSAT.

We have a decent WiFi connection. It’s not warp speed but its good enough and quite reliable. If you have a 4G smartphone though then you are somewhat spoilt, as we are located just a couple of miles away from a 4G transmitter and can get speeds in excess of 25Mbps.

The villa is actually situated at one end of a huge limestone barn (which was previously used for housing and feeding cattle, and drying both walnuts and tobacco). The middle barns are empty and will one day be converted to additional accommodation, but for now the old timbers still reveal its former life. At the other end of the barn there’s a garage and above that a small gite which is James and Cheryl's occasional bolt-hole. The gite is never occupied when paying guests are staying in the cottage.

A NOTE ABOUT LINEN & CLEANING

Linen and towels are provided and this is chargeable at €20 per person - and there is also an end-of-stay cleaning charge of €120. Our local property management company will make contact once the booking is confirmed to sort out these logistics. They are also able to get some shopping in if you require some essentials to be delivered, ready for your arrival.

A HAVEN FOR WALKERS

Keen walkers will be in seventh heaven at Villa Perigord. A footpath starts literally at the back door, and within a few short paces you have access to over 400km of documented walks, many of which are circular in nature. There are 2 local booklets which provide details of all the different walks, one covering the area around St Cyprien and one covering Sarlat. La Longere is situated where the two maps meet – so guests can enjoy the best of both worlds! Some of the walks take you into the forested hills, thick with wildlife, fauna and flora. From some vantage points there are spectacular views across the valleys and on a clear day you can see for 20+miles. Or you can choose to meander down to the Dordogne Valley itself, where quiet riverside roads and unmade tracks can take you all the way into St Cyprien, or across the river to Allas-Les-Mines (fabulous riverside restaurant) and the Chateau des Milandes.

EATING OUT

Restaurant lovers are spoilt for choice in the Perigord Noir, regarded by many as the gastronomic capital of the world. At the time of writing we counted 29 restaurants within a 5 mile radius with 4 stars or more on Tripadvisor. If 5 miles is too far for you, there’s a great restaurant just 1 mile away (Le Pavillon at the Chateau de Monrecour) and another two within 2 miles. There’s also a really good snack bar down by the river next to the kayak station.

Villa Perigord is our pride and joy and we are absolutely delighted to be able to share it with guests who are in search of peace and tranquillity, good food and wine, maybe a little adventure and culture, and above all some fresh croissants and walnut loaf from our stunning, award-winning local bakery.

Bienvenue a Villa Perigord!

Best Regards

Cheryl & James Wright

A truely relaxing residence, tranquility prevails

What a wonderful house to stay in, so relaxing and peaceful yet superbly located to activities should you wish. A short walk down through the properties own 'walnut grove' and you're at the Dordogne river itself with immediate access to canoeing, fishing and more wonderful walks. The house is stylishly decorated and furnished and not too precious - a real home from home - Loved it and will definitely be returning. Great location when flying into Bergerac too, easy to find and a pleasant straight forward journey (under an hour) by car.

A refaire !!! Merci aux propriétaires pour les petits cadeaux présents lors de notre arrivée.

Great location, nice and large property

This property is located in the middle of many splendid locations near the Dordogne river. Even though the house sits on its own in the countryside, many nice villages, castles and other beauties are within a ten minutes drive. There is not much light entering the house however it has everything it needs. And despite some bad weather we mostly sat outside around the terrasse tables.

Great week

An absolutely great property, especially with the addition of the new pool. Lots to see and do in the area, but was truly relaxing to get some food opin from the local markets and enjoy all the house has to offer. Lots of nice thoughtful touches to make the stay memorable. James was extremely helpful too. Thank you!!

Rustic Atmosphere, Well Equipped and Conveniently Located

My wife and I stayed 5 nights in September 2018. Consistent with the earlier reviews, we felt that this gite was well located, remote enough to be quiet, and well maintained. It was large enough to support 6 people comfortably, but worked fine for just 2. We would stay there again if we returned to the Dordogne River valley. The local manager was very responsive to any requests we made.

An absolute haven for a family holiday

La Longere ... What an absolute gem of a find for a 3-generation family holiday. The owners haven't left a stone unturned in providing every necessity and comfort that their guests could possibly wish for. Every room in the cottage (well, 'castle' by our standards!) was beautifully and thoughtfully decorated and equipped. The setting and location were perfect for us too with the river practically on the doorstep and so many lovely towns and villages to explore in very close proximity. One of the highlights for us was seeing the hot air balloons launching just a few hundred metres away. Check in and check out was stress-free. Dreaming of next spring or summer when we can return. Highly recommended.

Perfect family holiday in an idyllic location

Fantastic location with all amenities close by in St Cyprien. Many places to visit, such as Beynac, Sarlat and La Roque-Gageac, all beautiful and within half hours drive. The house was comfortable, spacious & well equipped, everything you could possibly need had been provided. Beautifully decorated and well presented, a traditional french house with the most perfect outdoor space offering endless fun & adventure for kids & adults. The large terrace offered both sunshine and shade, with a great BBQ - perfect space to relax. We spent many days on the river, just a short walk away & was pleasantly surprised to find a great little bar on the bank of the river. A days canoeing is highly recommended, as is taking some fishing gear!! Plenty to keep the whole family/kids entertained. Looking forward to a return visit.

Fantastic family holiday in this gem of a property

Wow, where do we even start! Firstly, what a fabulous cottage to spend a family holiday together, not to mention the beautiful setting. Your own little haven to retreat to after a day of exploring the markets, amazing old towns and playing along the river. The cottage is beautifully decorated and so well kitted out, we also enjoyed being able to eat as a family inside and alfresco...with lots of outdoor space for the kids to run around. So much to do on your doorstep for all ages, we found the location ideal! The owners (Cheryl & James), as well as the management company couldn't have been more helpful and we couldn't recommended this gem of a property highly enough. We can't wait to go back next year!!

Stunning, idyllic home from home

This beautiful house was home to 3 adults and a handful of teenagers and preteens for 2 weeks. We were not disappointed! The house was well equipped, comfortable and beautifully decorated - home from home. The large outside space and sunny terrace offered the children and us all the space we needed to entertain ourselves and relax. The local town, St Cyprien, was just a 5 min drive and offered weekly markets, restaurants, bars and a supermarket. Beynac was only a 10 min drive and well worth a trip, along with Les Jardins de Marqueyssac and La Roque Gageac just a short drive away - our only issue was not enough days to do everything!! The river was a 5 min drive or 10/15 min steady stroll, which we did alot - 2 bars (one with table tennis and badminton), restaurant and canoe hire, we spent many days sunbathing and swimming here. Some great fishing spots and the children had an absolute ball! Cannot recommend this gorgeous house enough. The owners, Cheryl and James have thought of everything - we will be definitely booking again next year.

Well-equipped cottage in lovely setting

The cottage itself has been recently renovated and all the equipment was of a high standard. The interior has been tastefully decorated to give a homely feel without being to kitsch. The kitchen area itself was stocked with essentials and a perfect space for preparing meals - the huge kitchen table was just right for playing games in the evening. The outside space was great - a small front garden with trees and flowers and a larger fenced space to the side and back of the house. We watched a Great Tit chick take its first flight from the patio. The patio itself, being across the front of the house, offers shade from the sun throughout the day and we had most of our meals there. The space to the side and back of the house was perfect for our two dogs to run and play. And from the back of the house there were several lovely walks up into the hills. It is a perfect setting to unwind and see the nature around you - we saw old boar and deer as well as many birds. However whilst you have the impression of being away from it all you are also fairly central for some of the best sites in the Dordogne including Sarlat, Domme and the caves of Lascaux.

The Cottage was absolutely gorgeous.

This was our first trip back to the Dordogne in 20 yrs. The area was almost unchanged, just as picturesque as we remembered. La longere is a gorgeous property with stunning views all round and was in the perfect spot for us to explore and rediscover the region. The large farmhouse style kitchen diner was cool during the heat of the day and on our last night we lit a fire in the huge fireplace which was amazing, the real heart of this home from home. The bedrooms are simple but stylish and the beds were really comfy. We didn't have time to watch it much (too busy, eating, drinking and exploring) but there was the added bonus of sky tv which we weren't expecting! The weather was glorious, we ate outside most days under the huge verandah. We had a delicious meal out locally at the beautiful riverside restaurant Le Gabarrier and also ate out a couple of nights in Saint Cyprien where there are a number of lovely little typical French restaurants including a great seafood restaurant next to the fishmonger. The rest of the time we self catered (mostly barbecues), the produce at the local markets in Saint Cyprien was excellent. We visited a couple of videgreniers and a brocante where we picked some great french keepsakes. We walked to the nearest town Bezenac on a public footpath straight from the house, there are loads of gorgeous mapped walks in the area, into the hills or down to the river. I have booked to visit again with some girlfriends for a walking holiday in May and am taking my dogs. My husband and his brother are planning another visit to fish the Dordogne with some mates, they plan to take their bikes this time. Can't wait to go back!

Why they chose this property

We started holidaying in southern France about 8 years ago when we decided that we'd start taking our dogs on holiday with us. Our first such holiday was in Provence. As you would expect we had a terrific time, but we ultimately concluded the long journey from Calais down to Provence with 2 dogs in tow was really not ideal (and a stopover with dogs is logistically quite tricky). So for our next holiday we thought we'd aim for somewhere slightly closer to home - still in the south of France, but not the extreme south. We settled on the Lot region - and we loved it. We spent 3 glorious summers in that area, and enjoyed it so much we thought it was about time we started looking for our own place. We saw about 8 places over the course of 2 trips, but none really hit the spot. Then James came across this place in the heart of the Dordogne. James had been to the Dordogne many times as a child and young adult, and had always enjoyed the holidays, but had assumed that it would be far too expensive to buy a property there. On paper this old limestone barn and cottage looked perfect, but the price was low, so surely it was too good to be true.

We were staying in the Lot again and the drive to the neighbouring Dordogne department to do the viewing took about 45 minutes. As we transitioned from the Lot to the Dordogne the landscape started to change very subtly, from wild and unkempt, to lush and cultivated. The villages changed too, from sleepy and part-shut, to lively and most definitely open. We saw sunflower fields and walnut trees and tobacco fields. Oh and geese - lots of geese! Memories from James' childhood came flooding back and broad grins adorned our faces as we approached La Longere in the village of Saint Vincent De Cosse. It was a gloriously warm, sunny day and as we stepped out of the car to see La Longere for the first time it seemed that everything was absolutely perfect. And it was. We fell in love with it and bought the property. And here it is - ENJOY!

What makes this property unique

For us it's location, location, location. Not only is it a beautiful property in a stunning setting with magnificent views across the Dordogne valley. It's also situated right at the very heart of Perigord Noir - in the so-called golden triangle. It's a stone's throw from many of the regions world-famous tourist attractions and yet it's just so peaceful and tranquil too. The walking is amazing, the cycling equally so and there's a canoe station within just a 3 minute drive. Add to that the fact that we have possibly the greatest boulangerie/patisserie in the world just a few hundred metres away and, we think you'll agree, it all adds up to the most perfect location for a holiday home. (We might be a little biased, but wait until you experience Lucco's fresh croissants for yourself and tell us what you think!).
