A close friend, talented architect, and neighbor on the compound, located this original 1803 home in 1995 for me. He made the critique that "...a beautiful motorcar deserves the scale and elegance that this house offers"; and it does. Also, the high ceilings fit my 6 foot 4 frame and my design concepts!
When the house was located, it had been closed up for 44 years. Extensive cypress wood, solid cypress columns and the raised trim design made for a great find. The unique mahogany spiral stairwell is a 3 story corkscrew style-one of just two in the city of Charleston.
Another impressive feature of this home is that it is totally original. Mantles, trims, stairwell, fireplaces etc..and all have been restored and made completely functional again adding, of course, modern plumbing and HVAC. It's elegant, formal style gives one a true feel of a special time and lifestyle in Charleston and has been featured in many design, architecture magazines and television shows.
Though the kitchen is fully appointed (Wedgewood China and chrystal) you're literally just steps away from some of the finest dining so why spend your time cooking? As you may have heard, Charleston is a culinary hot spot and all of our fine or fun dining is a walk or a short Uber or pedi-cab away. This is also a walkable city so you will want to spend some of your time here in comfortable shoes wandering our beautiful historic streets and alleys, learning our history, browsing our unlimited art galleries or shopping on King Street (which is just a few blocks away). Walking along the battery you just can't help feeling the history that this town is steeped in and so proud of. History is everywhere including in this 1803 home that survived war, earthquakes, hurricanes and fires.
