Beautiful Spot

The location was wonderful! A beautiful spot on the Scuppernong river with easy access to the water (4-6 ft deep for a long ways out). We swam, fished, and kayaked and saw dolphins, and osprey right off the dock. The property itself could use an upgrade. The outdoor shower was broken (looked like it hadn't been used in a while), the paddleboat was missing some pedals, and the furniture has seen better days. Owner filed a claim for an older chair; thankfully, we had renters insurance (required?). The uneven floors were noticeable, but didn't bother us. However, except for a couple days of really hot weather, it wasn't noticed, since we were outside enjoying the beautiful surroundings. The host was delightful, easy to work with, and wanted to ensure our stay was great. We enjoyed the great extras for guest use (fishing poles, games, hammock, etc). Highly recommend this place!

Nice view

Beautiful setting once you get to the house but if you are one of those highfalutin people you will not be happy however we are down to earth and don’t get out much so it was just fine for us. It’s not a good place to drive a nice clean car because the driveway is a mess if it rains Parts of it are clay mud holes and you are expected to walk down it and take the trash can but we actually had To go get the trash can so we could use it and it was raining but No biggie just saying and I guess the biggest thing to get used to is the house is un level and I don’t mean a little bit I mean probably 3-4” out of level so take some hot wheels because the hallway would make a great drag strip because it’s really a good downhill race I’m sure may not be a good place to do excessive drinking because I don’t know how you could stand and walk but might be a good challenge who knows but as I said all that really didn’t bother us because we are simple people and it is a beautiful setting… once you get past all the old equipment junk pile and get down the mostly clay driveway no problem for us because I was driving a truck and not a nice car but we still had fun and would stay again

Wonderful vacation spot

We stayed at this wonderful little retreat July 9-16 and we have already started talking about going back. Karen and her family were nothing but accommodating and wonderful. The property was far nicer than the description and photos (and both the description and photos were wonderful). Very small, minor grievances cannot begin to reduce the pleasure of staying on the river. It was a wonderful experience to roll out of bed, grab the fishing rod, and walk down to the water and drop a line (and catch all sorts of fish). In subsequent correspondence with Ms. York, I am pleased to hear she will be updating some features of the home (most notably the television in the living room area). That wasn't a factor for us, as I brought a spare TV I had laying about in the house, but I could see it being a "problem" for others. The property is wonderfully maintained, the views are beautiful, and the remote location is perfect for anyone looking for a getaway. It's only about 50 minutes to Nags Head, too, so, nothing is terribly far away. And the actual town of Columbia, while small, is very pleasant. Local produce, the fish market, the vineyard, and the small-town feel is very, very welcoming and inviting. Truly, it was one of the most relaxing, pleasant vacations (nothing quite prepares you for the view when you turn down the driveway to the house) and I hope to make this little hideaway on the Scuppernong a regular vacation destination (maybe next time I'll be there in the fall - I bet that's just lovely). Cannot recommend highly enough. It will be difficult to leave once you've arrived and settled in. A wonderful vacation spot!

Our stay at the Cypress and Spanish moss retreat was great. The home was an excellent location for a family retreat of fishing, relaxing, cooking, and fellowshipping. We had no problems and Karen was an excellent host with quick responses to any questions we had. The family had a wonderful time.

Clean home, comfortable beds and nicely stocked kitchen. We had to leave early due to the possibility of flooding, so that was unfortunate and I hope we get the opportunity to finish our trip at a later date

Easy to get to,quiet and peaceful. Spacious property with plenty of shoreline for fishing. House has enough room and is nice. Its not a new home so it has its kinks but nothing that will interfere with your stay. Karen and her family were super nice to deal with and we'll be back in the future.

This was our second visit and we enjoyed our stay once again. This home is very peaceful and exactly what we needed to get away for a few days. Made one side trip but stayed onsite for our other full day to soak up the beauty, peace, and quiet.

Magical waterfront location

Scenic spot right on the river with trees, Spanish moss, lapping waves, and marvelous sunsets. The living space itself is a no-frills manufactured home in need of re-leveling, but it’s comfortable, spacious, and has all the basics we needed for our 4-night stay. The location cannot be beaten for the price - great value. Private and quiet, and less than an hour drive to the outer banks beaches.

Work stay

House was exactly what we needed for a 7 day work trip at the papermill in Plymouth. A bit far to drive everyday. Leaving at 5:45 AM and not getting back until after 8 didnt leave much time for the water. But on the water location was good far sunrise and sunset viewing.

About the host

This is the home place in which I grew up. I attended Columbia High School. This has the small town charm where you know everyone.

Why they chose this property

This is family owned property. I grew up with my brother on the river-fishing, swimming, canoeing, water skiing and boating. I have enjoyed many years on the river with our family and friends and would like to share this experience with other couples and families. There is nothing as enjoyable like watching the sunset over the mouth of the Scuppernong River and the Albemarle Sound every afternoon.

What makes this property unique

Watching the sunset every afternoon sitting one the deck with my family is what made me fall in love with the River House. We have shared many meals with our family and friends outside. Cooking local seafood. And best of all making home made peach ice cream.
