About this property

Redhawk Retreat - A Great Cordwood Cabin Weekend Escape

COLORADO ORIGINAL Designed and built by painter/sculptor Jim Redhawk, this cordwood cabin is literally one-of-a-kind. Nestled into an aspen grove with a sunny Southern exposure, Redhawk Retreat is a rustic escape. Private, yet not secluded, the glade next to the cabin is a favorite resting spot for the local elk and moose to hide from the winter wind and the summer heat. With views across South Park to Pike's Peak and a sunset over the Western ridge.
Currently the home of two professional musicians who split our time between South Park and Portland, Oregon.

Beautiful House and Location
I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the Redhawk Retreat. The house was thoroughly stocked with enough supplies that you could easily cook all meals at the house. There were also plenty of dog supplies- bowls, leashes and bones. The yoga mats and blankets in the bathroom closet were a great surprise. I really liked the decor- everything was unique and thoughtful, and I had not planned as spending as much time in the house as I did, but it was really peaceful to do yoga in the living room and sit on the deck drinking coffee. The property is just a few minutes away from the main Fairplay main street and it took me under an hour to get to Breckenridge. There are a few neighboring houses nearby, but they were far enough away that you feel secluded. Everyone I passed while walking my dogs waved at me and seemed very friendly, and overall, it seemed like a very nice community. The valley behind the house is beautiful. I saw multiple deer and a moose one morning. Douglas provided thorough information on the property and things to do in the area and was quick to respond to all messages. I will definitely be back and look forward to visiting again in the Spring. Thank you for sharing your house!

Breathtaking
As a Colorado native, it’s important for me to get out of the city and into the fresh air. I enjoy taking my fiancé (who’s not a native) around different areas for weekend relaxing and adventures. High plains of South Park is one of my favorite destinations. We love sleepy and quiet and this area is just perfect. We were a bit early for the leaves, but this perfect cabin home is set in an entire aspen grove. The pictures don’t do it justice! Besides the land being incredible, the home itself is this artsy dream - so unique in design, and complimented perfectly with antiques and beautiful artistic touches. I love every room - the bathroom is perfect, great hot shower and cute window out to the trees. The primary bedroom was where we stayed and had one of the most comfortable beds I’ve ever slept in. I really didn’t want to get out of it. :) kitchen was stocked and well fit for us to cook in, with a sweeping view to boot. Windows surrounding and doors around the upper deck made it wonderful for us to drink our coffee and enjoy the peacefulness. Doug and his wife Liz are wonderful hosts, and I’m grateful they shared their home! They give loads of information prior to arrival for folks who’ve not been to South Park and fairplay. Really helpful and great communicator! We love it! My only feedback would be- someone with a camper truck using the power and water from the cabin parked very close by with a dog - just would be nice to be mentioned as startled me in daylight. :) no issue

Peaceful retreat in beautiful location
The house is very unique — it feels like a tree house perched up in the rustling aspens! We appreciated the thorough check-in guide to prep us for what was available at the house and what to bring, as well as ideas for what to do in the area. We went on some amazing hikes nearby and enjoyed the retreat from hot, busy Denver. The host was communicative and everything was as-described.

Nice and Unique Colorado Cabin
My family and I really enjoyed our stay at the Redhawk Retreat. It’s nice and private but still close to town. The cabin has a unique design and there’s plenty of room to spread out in the two story space. There’s a ton of cool features and details. We didn’t want for anything during our stay and wildlife and sunshine.

Our Beautiful White Christmas in the Rockies
This house was more than expected and the pictures don't do it justice. It is beautifully rustic and homely. We were looking for a family White Christmas and it was perfect. We called it our Hallmark Christmas 😁 the views are amazing and the house has so much character. We loved the decor. The kitchen is well stocked, just be prepared for no full size oven. We did have a hard time cooking our Christmas meal in the small convection oven because it didn't cook as fast as a normal oven would. We were so surprised too that the house stayed warm with only the one downstairs heater. The house is very well maintained and the owner and his cleaning person were absolutely wonderful and very helpful!

My family has been in and around Breckenridge since the late 1960's. When it came time for me to buy a home in Colorado, we ranged over the pass to find Redhawk. Liz and I bought the house from the original owners/designers/builders Jim and Beth Redhawk. Both artists, the home is literally their largest 'piece'. We have owned the home for the past two decades. Living here year-round one season while I took on an emergency vacancy at the local high school as music and performing arts director.
Liz and I make our 'other' home in Portland, Oregon. Our work takes us across the country and Internationally as concert and theater musicians.
While we are away, we are happy to share our home for you to also enjoy Redhawk Retreat.

Why they chose this property

"Redhawk" is not only the name of the builder and the name carved into the front door. It has become the moniker for the home, itself. As performing artists, we had a desire for our home to be in line with our own sense of individuality. Meeting Jim and Beth and learning of the community effort that went into the construction of the house, we felt an immediate kinship with their home.

What makes this property unique

Constructed as a 'cordwood' home, it is a perfect model for the style. High efficiency heat retention makes this home warm in the winter with a low environmental impact.
