About this property

Buckhead Aerie - Forested splendor minutes from downtown

This mid-century modern house, built in 1950, was designed by an architect whose work was influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright, as can be seen in the walls of windows, large, stone fireplace and efforts he took to ensure the house blends into the woods.
Its two bedroom/bathroom suites are located at separate ends of this 2,500-square-foot house, which sits atop a steep, heavily wooded hill overlooking Memorial Park in the Buckhead section of Atlanta, five miles north of the center of the city.
The third bedroom is tiny; it contains a queen bed and is located in what was originally a lavish dressing room adjacent to the master.
Each of the large bedrooms has a large television and a subscription to YouTube TV.
One of the bedrooms has a king-sized bed; the other two have queen-sized beds. The wifi is 1 gigabit fiber.
The central part of the house includes a sunken living room, which is lined by a wall of windows overlooking the park. It contains a concert grand piano that is kept in tune. The house also includes a sunken dining room, a breakfast nook, an office, a kitchen stocked with high-quality cookware and a laundry room.
Not available for parties without owner's prior permission. Check-in is at 4 p.m.; checkout is at 11 a.m. Prospective guests must have received several positive reviews from prior VRBO hosts to be considered. Minimum 30 days' stay required. Note that a property manager will meet guests upon arrival.

Nice quiet neighborhood

The house was large. The view was great, the neighborhood was quiet with easy access. There was some interesting construction going on, but it didn’t interfere with our comings and goings. We had a great time!

Thank you to my guest for her review. The construction she's referring to is a truck that the city has stationed for the past few weeks on the street in front of the driveway to clean the sewer line. It does not block access to the driveway, but my guests have had to drive around it. The work is slated for completion soon. Tom

Beautiful Retro Home

Beautiful home located in an equally beautiful neighborhood. Home is decorated with retro furniture. The only problem was the strong unpleasant smell of mothballs.

Thanks to my guest for his comments. I'm sorry about the smell of mothballs, which were in the rear closet off the main bedroom. They have been removed.

Outstanding experience!

This was one of my favorite VRBO stays ever. The house is amazing - it's like being in a well-preserved 1950s time capsule. We were in town to visit relatives spread out all over the greater Atlanta area and this home was central to everyone. The neighborhood is super nice and the home is right across the street from a park, which unfortunately we didn't get to take advantage of because it rained throughout most of our visit, but maybe next time. If you're a runner you'll love this area. We have three kids and there was more than enough room for all of us to spread out and be comfortable. Loved playing the piano. Loved perusing the bookshelves. Loved the view with the morning coffee. Can't wait to stay here again.

Quiet home in ATL

I am familiar with Atlanta after living there for several years in the past. I was in town visiting friends and looking for a place in a quiet neighborhood, near a park with the intent of enjoying a comfortable and well appointed place to stay. I got all of this at this property. Tom was available and had very clear and concise instructions which avoids any hassles with neighbors and with the property itself. There was ample room for my small dog to enjoy and the park across the street was a great way to enjoy social distancing! There are nearby drugstores and a Publix. Great restaurants in and around town. Good access to I-75 and the 400. The house was clean with a mid century modern feel. I personally was swayed by the beautiful baby grand piano which was well kept and in tune! I would stay at this property again hands down.

Many thanks to my guest for her kind comments. One minor correction: the piano is a concert grand, not a baby grand. :) Tom

Unique home in fantastic location!

We really enjoyed our stay at this very unique property. We were looking for something centrally located that would allow our dog to join us on our trip. This house was that and more. We couldn't have asked for a better location. The home is directly across from a wonderful park to walk the dog and a little ways down was a playground our kids enjoyed. The neighborhood is very quiet and peaceful but being in Buckhead you are only minutes away from great shopping, restaurants and grocery stores. The trees surrounding the home, the location on a hill and all the windows make you feel like you're in a treehouse. We loved the newspaper article hanging on the wall describing the history of the house. Beware, the driveway is very steep but once we had done it once or twice it wasn't an issue. Also, this is an older home that doesn't appear to have been renovated. It is a bit quirky, but so full of charm. Bottom line: we are very likely to stay here again if we are traveling with our dog. Thanks Tom!

Thanks to the guest for her thoughtful review. She is correct in stating that the house has not been renovated. That has been intentional. My goal is to keep it as authentically mid-century-modern as possible. So the striated plywood walls remain just that; the cedar shakes are weather-worn, the kitchen counters are not granite and the windows are casement windows are original and crank open. But prospective guests should know everything works, and the house is well maintained. In the past year, I have replaced all 8 skylights, the air conditioning unit, the dishwasher, the roof, the gutters.

Dated House, but Nice Location

This is a quirky house. Mid century modern, but not so modern. It was in need of renovations and redecorating. It was also not very comfortable for us to live in - there was really no place to relax and watch tv (except in the bedroom). If you like to spend your time singing around a piano, it would be great. The location was nice. It was across the street from Memorial Park, which was great for walking our dog. From the outside everything was clean. But when you opened drawers and cabinets there was a lot of debris; it didn't look like there had been a thorough cleaning for a long time. We also arrived about 3:15 (check-in was at 3). The maid was still there and told us she didn't want people coming until 4 or 5. This was a little disconcerting and definitely a disconnect.

The guest is absolutely right, the house is indeed quirky. It was built for the owner, whose taste I happen to like, but it does not appeal to everyone. There is no television set in the living room by design. It is intended to be used to look through the wall of windows that face the woods or at the rising sun, or to read a book, or, yes, to play the concert grand piano and maybe sing along. There is a TV in the master bedroom, and another in the room off the kitchen, but families who want to gather en masse around a television in the living room should consider looking for another rental. I am grateful for the guest's comment about the drawers and closets containing debris. Since I am out of the country, I was not aware that debris had accumulated there, and have asked the maid to clean them. I apologize to the guest for the fact that the house was not prepared for his arrival. It occurs rarely, but sometimes the maid requires more than 3 hours to clean between one guest's departure and the other's arrival.

Beautiful mid-century modern home

First of all, this is a beautiful mid-century ranch. Even though it is two bedrooms, it is quite spacious and great for entertaining. And very comfortable with lots of windows and light. The baby grand is a great extra. Some issues: 1. The driveway is very steep and if it is wet, it is hard to get up. The owner did have the leaves removed which helped, but it is still an adventure getting up it. If you have four wheel drive, no problem. Otherwise hit low gear and keep the RPMs up above 2000 and you should make it. 2. The living room and dining rooms are sunken with one or two long steps to get down to them. Not good for elderly people or toddlers. 3. The kitchen is missing a microwave. There was one stored in the bar but it did not appear functional. Overall a great value in an intown location. Owner is very responsive.

Response from VrboOwner on 20 August 2023
Thank you for the thoughtful review. 1. Yes, the driveway is steep. When covered with leaves or on the rare occasions when it snows in Atlanta, it can prove difficult to navigate. But, in the 10 years I have lived there, neither I nor the neighbors who share the driveway with me was unable to make it to the summit. Neither of us has a 4-wheel-drive vehicle. 2. The sunken living room is two steps below the main level of the house and there are two staircases to reach it, each equipped with normal-height stairs. If a guest chooses to bypass the steps, he or she will find that it is an uncomfortable distance to traverse in one step. That would apply doubly to toddlers, whose movements should be monitored. The dining room is also two steps below the main level. But access to it is limited to the steps. There is no way anyone -- toddler, older person or in between -- can bypass the steps. 3, The microwave is located in the laundry room, which is just off the kitchen. I leave it there because it is not a particularly pretty object. It works.

Perfect Location

We loved the house and the process was very simple. The house was clean and the owner was thoughtful enough to make sure coffee was in the house for you. There was nothing we needed that was not there. The only issue we had was getting up the driveway with the wet leaves.

Stunning mid century modern house

This house was amazing! Gorgeous rugs and a newspaper article about the original owners framed in the hallway. Fascinating story! The house is on a hill with the most amazing wooded views. Cute and well equipped!

The location was great fir the areas we wanted to visit. The owner Tom was friendly and always communicated with us. He went out of his way to make certain that our 90 year old mother was able to get around on his property. Very conscientious and an owner with integrity. Would recommend to others who wish to live in the Buckhead area.

Creepy feeling house

The house is up a very steep hill with a shared driveway. We arrived and found the back door unlocked so we feared someone could be in the house . It is a rambling somewhat cluttered house and it didn’t feel safe enough to stay in. We left immediately and stayed in a hotel. After I told the owner about our experience, he changed the dates of our rental to 3 nights rather than 5 but did not refund any nights. He said he would try to re-rent it, but not all the nights are put back on VRBO. It’s a very dangerous time right now in this neighborhood and you should not stay in this house if isolation concerns you.

There's a lot to unpack here, so bear with me if I appear to meander. Here are my guest's comments, which she sent on the afternoon after her scheduled arrival, after I sent her a note asking why it did not appear that she had arrived: "Yes , it was all dark inside and the sliding door on the back was unlocked and slightly ajar. The house had a lot of nooks and crannies and we weren’t sure if someone might be in there and didn’t feel safe as two women to walk through alone to check it out . Sorry I did t write tit that night but it was 9pm and we were exhausted after a long drive and have been very intensely working since then. Thanks for refunding any nights you manage to re-rent." There is no sliding back door; I'm guessing that my guest was referring to a door in the rear bedroom that opens onto a patio. I am sorry that the maids must have left it unlocked. Since then, I have asked them to ensure that the door in the back bedroom is locked and that lights are left on. I offered to reopen the calendar and to refund any money I was able to get, but I got no takers. That was not a surprise, since most people book well in advance. I'm not sure what she is referring to about having changed the rental dates to 3 nights rather than 5. I'm guessing that I was not able to open dates that had already passed and that I did not re-open the dates until the day after she told me she was not planning to stay there. Hence, only 3 days were available for reopening. The driveway is indeed steep, though it is used daily by the two neighbors -- both of whom are elderly and handicapped -- who share it with me. I'm not sure what my guest is referring to in describing the house as "somewhat cluttered." The pictures on the website are recent, and the house's furnishings have not changed since they were taken. Buckhead has had crime issues in the commercial district, but the residential neighborhood where my house is located is far from there; it's so safe that I never used locks while I was living in the house. It was only when I began renting it out that I had working locks installed. Amid the trees, at the top of a hill overlooking a park, one does get a sense of isolation, which some people like. I'm sorry my guests had such an unfortunate experience. Had I known about their safety concerns at the time, I would have been able to do something about them.

Why they chose this property

Built in 1950, this house is a mid-century modern designed by an acolyte of Frank Lloyd Wright. Clad in cedar shingles and overlooking a park, it is barely visible from the street, as the architect intended.
The views are intended for those who live inside -- the house faces east, so you can see the sun rise through the floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook the trees, rhododendron and azaleas that dot the property.
The house was designed for maximum light -- the sun pours in through 8 skylights, and the walls of windows at the front and rear of the house mean you can literally see through the house when the curtains are open.
The concert grand piano appears small compared to the size of the living room in which it sits.
Though just 8 minutes from downtown, you are truly in the woods here.
In addition to the three bedrooms and two full bathrooms, the house has an office with a desk; two of the bedrooms have desks.
A security camera is located outside the house; it does not have a view inside the house.
