Home Sweet Home in Dover NH!

This home reminded us of a lovely cottage in the woods. it was quiet and peaceful. The kitchen was fully stocked with everything we needed. The porch was amazing and looked out upon a beautifully landscaped backyard surrounded by gorgeous plants and flowers with access to a walking trail. The owners were a pleasure to work with. It was truly a wonderful stay and we would do it again!

Girls Weekend

The property was perfect for our girls weekend. It had everything we needed. Clean and comfortable and perfectly located. We spent time in Portsmouth, NH as well as Kittery, Maine. Both were very short drives. There was some snowfall while we there and Jim was in touch immediately, making sure all was good. I highly recommend this property and thank the owners for a wonderful weekend!

RELAXING!!

Everything was just as described, no surprises. Plenty of room for everyone in my family, 6 adults and 1 child. We felt very safe, close to downtown, very easy to get around and lots of places to eat and to see. Very clean. We really enjoyed our stay. I would only say that the mattress could have been softer lol, they were very firm. But overall the entire package was well worth the money and the location was perfect! Thank you so much for sharing your home.

Lovely home with great perks

Enjoyed this lovely home and the beautiful landscaping. Had plenty of room with three bedrooms and two full baths. Red raspberries were plentiful in the backyard and the owners generously offered them to us. The screened-in porch was a special place for quiet mornings and fun evenings. Had lively ping-pong matches in the finished basement. The owners were very thoughtful and kind in allowing us to make the place our own during our stay. Owners were also very welcoming and thorough in communication and instructions. Was a short drive to York Beach and surrounding area. Would recommend this property for anyone visiting the southern New Hampshire/southern Maine area.

Great stay!

James's communication EXCEEDED expectations!! The house was clean and easy to find. Directions for the house were clear cut and easy to understand. We didn't need to connect with him at all because he made it easy! Location is close to downtown also. We'll definitely be utilizing this place again if when we go back up that way!! Thanks for a great experience!

Charming and comfortable

What a wonderful place to stay in Dover. The house is so welcoming—it felt like I was staying in a friend’s house. The location is convenient and it is easy to get to Portsmouth. My dog enjoyed the walk along the river just down the road from the house. I hope to be able to stay there again.

Best VRBO Ever!!!

I can't say enough wonderful things about this property! The owner made everything so easy. We emailed back and forth prior to our stay so we were very comfortable going in. The place was spotless and so well stocked that we didn't have to run to the market over and over. The back of the house has a wonderful screened in porch and a large deck. We spent most of our time out there. The place is centrally located so we were always within a short drive to restraunts, stores and site seeing. I would highly recommend this property and would definitely stay there again.

Family vacation in Dover

We stayed at the house for the week visiting family. It was perfect for us - my kids (1 and 3) settled in right away, and I loved that we could put them to bed upstairs and have time to ourselves. I loved how clean and airy the home was. The porch was wonderful! The location was perfect for us - only 20 minutes from my family, only 15-20 minutes away from Portsmouth, and 30 minutes from the beach. I highly recommend staying here if you are visiting New Hampshire and Maine!

Perfect Cozy home for a family get away!

James and Mario are great hosts! Their place is super cozy and was perfect for the special occasion we were visiting the area for. Great location to do and see many areas in New Hampshire. The house was clean and comfortable. The enclosed back porch was my fave place for coffee and reading and chatting with the family. Check in was a breeze and the hosts were readily available for any questions and they are very organized! I hope that I will be in the area again so I may stay again! Thanks for everything James and Mario!

Excellent Family-Friendly Home Away from Home

Our Family of Four (including our two kids, ages 3 and 6) stayed here for a week while visiting with friends and family in the area. It worked out perfectly for us to have a bedroom for each of the kids, one of which had a lower bed, which was great for the 3 year old. Although we did not meet in person, Jim was terrific and highly accessible and responsive. We really appreciated the little touches like laundry detergent, basic kitchen condiments, beach towels, and card games that he provided to make our time there more convenient and enjoyable. Breakfast on the back porch, playing ping pong in the basement, and walking about a block to the Dover Community Trail were some of our favorite activities during our stay. We visited in August and while it did get a little warm, with a little planning the window a/c units worked just fine to keep us all comfortable. Dover was a nice town with a great bakery (Harvey's) and coffee shop (Flight) that we enjoyed checking out. We also enjoyed visiting the Children's Museum of New Hampshire right in town. The location also provided a good jumping off point to visit Portland, Portsmouth, and the Maine beaches. We'd definitely come back next time we're looking to stay in the area.

Dover Delights

We delighted in our stay at the Verschuerens with its cozy back porch decorated with grandkids' artwork. It was in a great location for our visit to Dover. The four of us were able to walk Emma, our granddog, along the river trail near the house, head to downtown, and enjoy historic Dover. We ate outside along the sidewalk at the Thirsty Moose and had great food while Emma enjoyed all the people and dogs walking by. Along our walk back to the house, we found the Dover Delite ice cream shop where the ice cream was as great as the size of its portions. The evening was spent on the porch playing cards and listening to the cheers of excitement at the little league ballpark. After our eventful evening, the beds slept well. The kitchen was well stocked and had comfortable seating. It was like staying at a friend's house (only they were missing). We definitely think you'll be glad you decided to stay.

Great place!

The house is located close to just about everything. It is a simple, comfortable house with a wonderful back porch. Having the Dover Community Trail & Cocheco River so close in the back to walk to was a great way to enjoy the outdoors. Look forward to staying there again.

Comfortable home for the weekend

This is a cozy house that accommodated our family for the weekend. The screened-in porch was wonderful. We had breakfast at the dining table out there in the mornings and hung out there in the evenings. The kitchen had everything we needed. Beds were comfortable. Plenty of parking if you have more than 1 car. Close to nice walking areas.

Great house, great location!

My family and I wanted to experience the fall foliage in New England. With a young child in tow, it was difficult to find a good, central location. We made Dover, New Hampshire our home base. It was a great central location. Easy to get to Massachusetts, Vermont and Maine. The house itself was exactly what the pictures portrayed and the owners described. Plenty of room. Nice, covered porch for dining. It was close to grocery stores, bakeries, restaurants, you name it. It also had a nice path that you could walk along nearby. The owners were great to work with. I highly recommend the house!

About the host

Host profile image
Carlo and I are retired educators, he as a high school teacher, I as an administrator most often in nonprofit organizations. Travel is a passion - we spend time each fall in France in a small village where we lived for 10 months in 2010. This photo was taken in Dublin. We were traveling with Norm the Moose from Jim's Rotary club. We have been together since 2006 and were married in 2009.

Why they chose this property

Ours is an easy-living home - cozy, comfortable, offering exceptional access to this dynamic region. Jim is a former state representative in the NH legislature and a huge Dover booster. Carlo moved here from his home state of New Jersey "for one year" in 1973 and never left. The proximity to cultural activities, the ocean, the mountains made it a permanent stay. People who don't know New Hampshire are always surprised by all we have to offer, especially here in the Seacoast. Our home offers the dual benefits of in-town, congestion-free living with stores close by as well as a country feel along the river just out the back door.

What makes this property unique

Those who come in the summer and fall have the special treat of enjoying meals on our large screened in porch at the back of the house. A country feel in the heart of the city. The grill is on the adjacent side deck. Though we are very much in urban Dover, out the back door is a two minute walk to little league baseball fields and the Dover Community Trail along the Cochecho River. Two miles in one direction is all rural. 15 minutes in the other direction leads you to the downtown portion of the trail, an easy stroll to downtown. Summers feature outdoor Friday evening concerts at the Rotary Pavilion downtown. For theater lovers, the summer family-oriented plays in Portsmouth's Prescott Park are a special treat. We take our grandchildren every year. Beer lovers will appreciate several micro-brew pubs in downtown Dover.
