Albie's cottage: Cute secluded timber home on a bush block by the sea
Albies cottage is a small double story timber house easy walking distance to the Killiecrankie Bay. It is homely, neat, calm and quiet, and furnished in a simple and practical way. The place can be described as shabby chic rather than stainless-steel hotel-standard. There is a small upstairs bedroom with a queen bed and an upstairs study with a single bed, a double sofa-bed, a good collection of novels and cookery books, some DVDs and a DVD player [a smart TV with no live reception], and a long desk. Downstairs there is a kitchen-lounge and a small laundry and bathroom. The large corner seat in the loungeroom can double up as a spare bed. The cottage stands on a half-acre block and cannot be seen from the road. It is on a bit of a hill and is not really suited to people with mobility issues. While it possible to drive up to the cottage, we would much prefer if people parked inside the property down the hill and walked up the 50 meters or so to the house. Because of the steep stairs, the cottage is also not really suitable for small children or those who find stairs difficult to navigate. It would be ideal for people finishing a project of some sort or simply looking for a quiet holiday close to the beach. There are basic cooking and cleaning supplies in the kitchen, good quality linen and towels, a sewing kit, a picnic basket and a first aid kit, and some tools. There is no internet but good Telstra phone reception. Because of fire restrictions, there is no barbecue at the cottage, but a free council one five minutes' walk down the road close to the beach.
There is no shop or cafe in the village. The nearest shop is around 40 minutes' drive in Whitemark. However, it is possible to order groceries from the Walkers' supermarket in Whitemark over the phone [0363 592 010], and get them delivered on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for a small charge. While it is in theory possible to do without a car, in practice you would almost certainly need to rent one on the island. During school holidays, rental cars are difficult to book, so please plan ahead.

Killiecrankie diamonds: Killiecrankie is well known for Killiecrankie Diamonds, a form of topaz that can be found on a local beach. For those who would like to try their hand at prospecting, there are two knowledgeable local residents - Alan and Margaret Wheatley - who can help. They live in the Killiecrankie village, a few houses down from the cottage, on the same side of the road. Their phone is 63598560, mobile 0407598560. They hire out panning equipment, show you what the stones look like, and give you a couple of little maps with where you can find them. Alan asked that you phone them first, and work out a good time to drop in. If you do find some Killiecrankie Diamonds - or decide to buy some - there is a local jeweler, Sandro Donati, who can make them into beautiful pieces of jewelry for you. Sandro lives at Killiecrankie, and his workshop is in the White Shack [behind the pub] in Whitemark. His mobile is 0429 383 375.

As a beginner, and preoccupied with a death in the family, I totally mucked up the maintenance and cleaning schedule. This has now been fully remedied, not least thanks to the thoughtful advice from the guests.
A lovely little cottage set in the bush and views of Mt Killiecrankie and a quick walk to the beach. Perfect location. Alby’s is ideal for one, two or a couple and one person. It’s cosy.
Had a great time chilling out in this very comfortable cottage. looking out over the Killicrankie bay each afternoon soaking up the vista from the upstairs deck was the best.
For our first trip visiting Flinders Island we couldn’t have imagined finding such a quiet quaint property like this. Everything we needed and more was provided, the home was relaxing and made us feel like we weren’t just visiting we were in our own getaway house. As we both like fishing maybe a suggestion to have a few fishing rods for guests to utilise while staying is the only thing we would have liked but overall there is nothing else we could have desired for a great weekend away. We will definitely be back and thank you so much for sharing your little piece of paradise. Kind regards Dan and Mel.

Dan and Mel, thanks for the suggestion about fishing rods. I have a couple of spares I will leave in the cottage with hooks and sinkers - but they will not be the latest fancy gear...
We loved our time at Albie's. It was the perfect little home for us while on Flinder's. Highly recommend. Great communication, clean and tidy with a very homely feel. Very relaxing.
We had a wonderful stay at Albies cottage! This humble and secluded little cottage was well supplied with cooking equipment and utensils and we found ourselves enjoying many breakfasts on the little top deck overlooking the killiecrankie range. The cottage was neat and tidy on arrival and a cosy place to stay.
Albie’s cottage was delightful. Perfect location secluded amongst the trees and only 5 mins stroll to the beach. We did some lovely walks and great swims and snorkels. Very cosy and welcoming shack, beautiful views from upstairs, good for star gazing too. Pavla was very good at answering all our questions and left us some beautiful fresh herbs too
Cute cottage, well stocked with basics and more, excellent location, had a great stay.
Ideal coastal cottage, small but easy to live with, nothing to fussy but all that you need for a great beach stay. Wouldn't suit anyone wanting to watch TV, but that didn't bother us, and why wouldn't you be outdoors anyway.
Everything you need when cisoting Flunders. Cosy, well equipped, views.

About the host
Hosted by Pavla Miller
I am a semi-retired academic, and live half-time in Melbourne and half-time on Flinders Island. The property was purchased for my late partner's children and grandchildren. For the next few years, they will not be able to visit often, or at all, and so the cottage is up for rent.
Why they chose this property
The modest cottage is a remarkably friendly and calming place. We fell in love with it the moment we stepped in. I hope you will like it too.
