About this property

Rare, Single-Family Home In Desirable Munjoy Hill Neighborhood Near To Ocean

10 Emerson St. is a lovingly restored 1870 New Englander located in the heart of the Munjoy Hill neighborhood and just 2 short blocks from the Eastern Promenade and amazing views of Casco Bay's islands. Three of Portland’s top restaurants are just around the corner and Hilltop Coffee Shop, Rosemont's natural foods market, and St. Lawrence Performing Arts Center are only a block away.

The house has been completely renovated inside and out over the last 10 years and contains designer furnishings. This is a two-story, airy and bright house with a completely renovated walk out lower level offering a third floor of living area. There are three full bathrooms, one on each floor (including the lower level). The master bedroom contains a queen size bed and a walk out to a private deck. The adjoining bathroom has a walk in shower. The second bedroom is furnished with a queen-size bed. Entering the first floor you will find a living room, dining room, kitchen, full bathroom (with claw foot tub) and mudroom. The living room contains a 42”flat-screen TV with Roku player and surround sound. Both the first and second floors have high ceilings and hardwood floors.

The multi-functional, bright, walk-out lower level is uniquely designed by an architect and features a central family room complete with Queen sofabed (NOT NECESSARILY IDEAL SLEEPING FOR OLDER PEOPLE DUE TO BEING LOW TO THE GROUND), desk area, wood stove and a modern, in-home theater system based around a 100” projection screen. The third bathroom is located in the lower level and functions as a designer wet room. The lower level also contains a kitchenette and laundry facilities. The outside living space includes an intimate, lush, dining area and a well-landscaped, English, garden-style courtyard, including exterior lighting and a fountain.

The property has high-speed internet, Roku players with access to TV, Netflix and Amazon services.

About the host

Host profile image
We are a married couple who met in 1997 at the University of Southern Maine. Lynn is a Political Scientist and Lee is an Environmental Scientist. We purchased 10 Emerson St in 2002 when it was in very poor condition. Lynn saw the potential in the house and led the gradual renovation and restoration of the charm of this classic New Englander. Lee has worked in New Jersey since 2002, commuting up to Maine at weekends to be with the family. We love the house and Munjoy Hill. The house is now being offered as a vacation rental because Lynn has accepted a job in New Jersey, so we are relocating our primary home to be together and to get free of the commute. Our 11-year-old daughter, Rowan, loves this house and is very sad to leave, but accepts that this is the chance for our family to be together full time. We will miss the walks with our dog by the ocean, the beautiful sun rises and sun sets, the fantastic food, the arts scene, the great neighborhood and the people that make this an amazing place to live.

Why they chose this property

Lynn loves combining old with new and Lee is British and wanted a house with some history and in a colorful neighborhood. 10 Emerson St fits the bill perfectly and provided us access to the things we value in life: natural beauty, historic charm, walkable neighborhood, excellent restaurants, and diversity. The house was a huge amount of work for us at first, but we slowly gathered steam on the project and ended up completely renovating every inch of the house and the yard. It is perfectly situated on Munjoy Hill, being just 2 blocks from the Eastern Promenade and all its activities and beauty and a stone's throw away from the central row of restaurants, organic food market, performing arts theater and coffee shop. We can walk to the Old Port and Downtown in 15 minutes. With 10 Emerson St, we saw a unique opportunity to raise our daughter with direct access to so much in a beautiful and safe neighborhood.

What makes this property unique

This is an incredibly safe, highly desirable neighborhood with access to restaurants, theater, parks and the waterfront. This is the funkiest, most desirable, pedestrian friendly, low traffic and highly scenic part of Portland. Despite its popularity, this a quiet neighborhood. The Eastern Promenade provides access to miles of walking/cycling paths, where you get panoramic views over Casco Bay and opportunities for spotting wildlife, including Osprey, Bald Eagles and seals. Three excellent Portland restaurants are just around the corner from the house, along with a natural foods store and the St. Lawrence Performing Arts Center.
