About this property
Big Red House - Historic Bangor Home
Welcome to the Big Red House, located in the Whitney Park Historic District in Bangor! We’ve made some upgrades and renovations and are excited to share them with you. Pine ceilings have been added, as well as new furniture, memory foam gel mattress toppers, and a renovated master bathroom. Built c. 1869, the BRH is one of the Queen City’s oldest homes. Once owned by sea captains and the father of a US Treasurer, the BRH is the perfect place to stay to experience Bangor, the once lumber capital of the world and one of the busiest ports on the East Coast. Visit the Penobscot Reservation on Indian Island near Old Town (about 20 minutes to the north) to learn about Maine's Penobscot Tribe. And the Bangor Historical Society down the street will shed light on Bangor's French, Irish, and English history.
At the 2600 sf. Big Red House, you'll enjoy a huge eat-in kitchen, 4 bedrooms (2 queen and 2 twin) - our downstairs office has a twin daybed and can be closed off to use as a bedroom, and upstairs laundry, pellet stove, garage, central heat, and private driveway. It's close to downtown, too! Great for couples, solo adventurers, business travelers, families, and groups. A hop, skip and a jump away from lobster pounds, hiking trails, local theaters, shopping, dining, historical churches, museums, Hollywood Slots casino, and skiing. Check out the Bangor Waterfront along the Penobscot River, and Author, Stephen King's house located right down the street. Dogs welcome (no other pets, please.) And enjoy an edible gift from us to you just for choosing the BRH!
The BRH is a non-smoking property.
(Note: This property is equipped with exterior cameras and any illegal activity is reported directly to local police. Thank you for respecting the BRH.)

Hi Guest!
I can't wait for your visit to the Big Red House in Bangor. Built around 1869, the historic BRH was my permanent home for nearly 25 years. So many wonderful memories are here. While in Maine, I was a television and radio announcer and can still be heard from time to time on stations still airing my voiced ads. Many of my family members were born and raised in Bangor and the surrounding towns. Bangor will always be our home, where we enjoyed performances at the Penobscot Theatre and delicious meals at boutique restaurants downtown; many holiday dinners right in the BRH kitchen! A river stroll along the waterfront is also something to look forward to. If you venture on a short walk just a couple blocks away, you will find the house of Author, Stephen King. It's red, just like mine! There is so much history to learn about the charming 'Queen City.' I understand why you have come to VRBO. Not only will you find deals on overnight stays, but it's just that feel of secure comfort that we love when we are away from home. I've traveled to many places, both in the US and in foreign lands, and I always enjoyed sleeping at guest houses and quant little inns. There's something special about staying at the home of a local. The Big Red House awaits you.

Why they chose this property
Why choose the BRH? The Big Red House is centrally located to all kinds of activities and popular spots in the Bangor area. One mile from the waterfront and 1 mile from downtown where you will find quaint shops and restaurants. Less than 5 miles to Bangor International Airport and entrance to I95. Ten minutes away from the Bangor Mall area, Home Depot and Lowes, chain restaurants like Texas Roadhouse, Longhorn Steakhouse, Uno's, and more. Twenty minutes from the University of Maine. Don't forget the Thomas Hill Standpipe just two minutes away in the neighborhood, which opens to guests only four times a year; one per season. Make it a point to climb the steps to the top!
What makes this property unique
The Big Red House holds a rich history within its walls. So many fishermen and ship captains called Bangor home. A few have owned the BRH. Bangor was once the logging capital of the US and the busiest port on the East Coast. The infamous Brady Gang Shootout of 1937 took place on Central Street in Downtown Bangor and yours truly was a participant in its reenactment a few years ago! If you walk through the many rooms of the house and decide to count its doors and windows, you will find about 21 of each. I think I miscount every time. Little cubbies found in some of the rooms, hard wood floors, tin and pine ceilings, and connecting bedrooms add to the special unique charm that makes the BRH stand out from other homes. Come see for yourself.
