About this property

17th Century Granary

Imagine arriving down a secluded country lane to a beautifully restored 1670 granary, where centuries of history meet quiet comfort. The Granary at Newbrook House is a refined two-bedroom retreat set in the peaceful countryside of County Mayo, between the towns of Claremorris and Ballinrobe, offering the rare combination of genuine seclusion and easy access to the very best of Ireland’s wild west.
Inside, you’ll find two bedrooms, one bathroom, a full kitchen, and a dining room centred on a solid teak table made for long, lingering meals. The stunning living room is warmed by a wood-burning fireplace, and the principal bedroom is anchored by a magnificent hand-carved super king bed, while antiques, original artwork, and the glow of the fire give every room a sense of warmth and history. Days here are made for slow mornings with coffee, long walks down country lanes, and evenings spent unwinding by the fire.
When you’re ready to explore, the legendary Ashford Castle, the dramatic Wild Atlantic Way coastline, and the revered pilgrimage site of Knock Shrine are all within easy reach, along with the lakes, golf courses, heritage abbeys, and welcoming villages that make this corner of Mayo so special. The Granary is an unhurried, elegant base for travellers who want to slow down and experience the real Ireland.

Ireland Adventure

We stayed at this location for four nights, it was a wonderful place to make our base from. We were able to visit Ballintubber Abbey, Ashford Castle, Kylemore Castle, Achill Island. The restaurants in Ballinrobe were GREAT. Would Highly recommend this location.

It was so lovely to host Larry and Celeste. Their joy and passion for the location and all the activities they undertook was contagious and very impressive. We would love to see them back here anytime! Not to mention the fact that Larry took some amazing photos which he has shared with Newbrook House!

A charming getaway

Our stay was amazing. Our kids asked for an Irish farmhouse experience and this cottage delivered. We cooked, played games, fed animals and explored the area. The host was super accommodating and so knowledgeable about the area and gave us great recommendations. Even though it was July, the weather was rainy and chilly, so the warm fire was cozy and the well water was a nice surprise. We definitely want to come back!

A great rural Irish experience

It’s a beautiful, quiet property, centrally located in Mayo County, making for easy day trips to different parts of the county. For a couple of city dwellers it was a thrill eating breakfast while watching through the window as cows grazed thirty feet away. Caroline is a wonderful and gracious host.

First time in Co mayo

We choose Newbrook House because it's a very old converted stone grannery with lots of character. We stayed for a week and explored Co Mayo a county we had never visited before. The cottage was warm and cosy with a wood burning stove. The bathroom was spacious with a roll top bath. Caroline was a lovely host and provided us with lots of local knowledge. Jan the manager was very helpful and Frank a local retired farmer was a font of knowledge. We had great weather and really enjoyed our stay.

Our first trip to Ireland

We spent 6 wonderful nights at Caroline's country getaway. It was a great experience! First and foremost, Caroline is a lovely host. Very professional in running her business, but also warm, welcoming, and fun to visit with and get ideas from. The home met all our standards for cleanliness and we slept well on the comfortable high quality linens. This place is perfect if you want to be in the quiet countryside, among the old stone buildings and fences, with animals grazing nearby. We found Newbrook House to be charming, comfy and just what we were looking for!

Family catch up

We loved staying at this gorgeous homely cottage during a recent family reunion - I took my 88 yo Mum home to visit her siblings, and my 24 yo son joined us . Jan was very attentive to our needs and we really enjoyed Caroline's generosity - we loved returning each evening to our home away from home. Located near to Ballyglass and close to many Mayo points of interest it was a good place to tour from , and we enjoyed the open fire and did not mind the lack of TV ...Internet reception was excellent .

GORGEOUS

One of the most beautiful parts of Ireland. And this house is stunning, the accommodations clean and comfortable and quiet. A lovely sitting room with windows looking out onto the green fields, a well appointed kitchen. The bedrooms are cozy and high quality linens. Soaking tub to relax in. So much to do, the cute towns nearby, Ashford Castle, walks to take, culture and countryside. PERFECT. I will return again!

Charmed in Claremorris

What can I say? The property is stunning - like going back in time! The cottage itself is absolutely charming!!! It's a sunny little oasis with tons of windows, natural sunlight and fresh hydrangea on every window sill. There are two lovely bedrooms and a huge bathroom with an incredible soaker tub and separate shower. The sitting room is gorgeous - sunny, beautifully appointed with a fabulous wood fireplace (the mantle is stunning) and original wall niches full of books to cuddle up with. The kitchen is charming and has everything you need. Caroline, Jan, and Frank (and the cows on the hill outside your window) are wonderful hosts. All told - I had a delightful stay and would have happily stayed there forever :-) p.s. minutes to town and everything you could possibly need.

Joy for the Soul!

A lost passport and a canceled leg of our trip had us very frazzled. We had to find a last minute open place to stay and we needed some solace...cue Newbrook House! The minute we came down the driveway and saw this charming place, our stress began to ebb....cows lowing in the fields, a Connemara horse galloping along the stone wall, 3 welcoming cats....what a start....then we entered this charming and pristinely clean cottage and were welcomed with a warm fire going in the wood stove and it felt like heaven had descended. Just fabulous! Caroline popped in to say hello and she was just about as cool as you can get. She not only was a wealth of information regarding the area but also very soothing in her approach to our dilemma with the lost passport (she is a very regular world traveler). She even made calls on our behalf to 'get the ball rolling' as we dealt with the American embassy, the airlines, courier services, etc. Thank you Caroline!! This section of Ireland is stunningly gorgeous and it was clutch to have an insider's perspective and recommendations for things to do that were outside the circle of the tourist realm. The first evening of our arrival I took a wonderful hot bath in the clawfoot tub. This is something I have NEVER done in any place but my own home but everything was so immaculate that I felt 100% comfortable luxuriating and allowing all my troubles to drain away. It set the tone for the next 5 wonderful days. I didn't want to leave. Cheers!!

Thanks so much for the lovely review Seanne. We enjoyed having you and Bob here and so admired how, despite the tremendous stress from the lost passport, you both still managed to be upbeat and make the most of your unscheduled stop in the West of Ireland. We miss you!

About the host

Host profile image
Newbrook House has been a labour of love for our family. It began with a longing for somewhere to truly rest, a place that offered real tranquility, comfort, and beautiful design, where you could restore body and mind. We could never quite find it, so we set out to create it ourselves: an “undestination,” a place to capture the heart and rejuvenate the soul.

When we came upon Newbrook House, its grace and charm were still intact despite the restoration it needed, and we knew we’d found it. Since completing the restoration, we’ve been fortunate to host visitors from far and wide, who’ve travelled to us from every corner of the globe. We’ve poured real care into every detail, filling the house with the antiques, art, and books that make it feel like a true home rather than a rental, and we love pointing guests toward the local craftspeople, producers, and hidden corners of Mayo that we have come to treasure.

What we enjoy most about hosting is watching guests arrive weary from travel and slowly exhale. The nearby lanes and paths are replete with nature, adventures wait in the surrounding towns, and there’s no pressure to do any of it. Our hope is simply that you will come to experience the essence of being, and not doing, and leave Newbrook House feeling refreshed and restored.

Why they chose this property

We chose this corner of Mayo because it iss one of the most genuinely peaceful and beautiful places in Ireland. Newbrook House sits at the end of a secluded country lane, sheltered by the ancient stone walled garden of the original Bingham manor house. Green fields stretch in every direction, the mornings are full of birdsong, and the evenings bring some of the most spectacular sunsets in Ireland.

What we love most is how much the area offers. The quiet lanes and paths are made for slow morning walks, the lakes of Lough Mask and Lough Carra are a short drive for fishing or peaceful reflection, and the historic market towns of Claremorris and Ballinrobe have everything you need close at hand. Further afield lie Ashford Castle, the Wild Atlantic Way, Knock Shrine, and a wealth of golf courses, heritage abbeys, and welcoming villages.

It is the rare place where you can do as much or as little as you like, and either way, you feel as though you’ve discovered somewhere special that most travellers never find. That sense of being let in on a secret is exactly what made us fall in love with it, and it’s what we most enjoy sharing with our guests.

What makes this property unique

The Granary at Newbrook House began life in 1670 as part of the Bingham family’s Clanmorris estate, and it has been lovingly restored into a refined two-bedroom retreat that wears its history with grace. Set at the end of a secluded country lane and sheltered by the ancient stone-walled garden of the original manor house, it offers a rare kind of seclusion, a genuine hidden gem in the heart of Mayo’s wild west.
Inside, every room tells a story. The principal bedroom is anchored by a magnificent hand-carved super king bed, and throughout the house carefully chosen antiques, original artwork, and curated collections sit alongside a wood-burning fireplace, creating spaces that feel both elegant and deeply personal. This is a home with genuine character, the kind of place you can’t simply build, but only restore.
The setting is just as rewarding. The legendary Ashford Castle, with its falconry and fine dining, is a short drive away, as is the elegant Mount Falcon Estate to the north. The dramatic coastline of the Wild Atlantic Way is within easy reach, and the revered pilgrimage site of Knock Shrine lies comfortably nearby. What truly sets The Granary apart is the feeling of being welcomed into a piece of living history, an unhurried, soulful place to simply be, in one of the most beautiful corners of Ireland.
