About this property
Stylish villa, 13m private pool, tranquil garden, close to village amenities
This detached villa with beautiful pool is our home in the south of France. It located close to the border with Spain and close to the beautiful Cote Vermeille Mediterranean coastline.
Book it as your base, and come and explore this area around Maureillas and Ceret in the Languedoc-Roussillon, one of the lesser known regions of France. There is so much to see and do, or just relax with a glass of wine round the pool in the vineyards or at the beach...
The villa is centred on 1/2 an acre of gardens with a large swimming pool big enough to play in, and with a proper deep end (1.8m). Parking is available for several cars on the drive.
The layout is mostly open plan with the kitchen giving onto two separate dining areas, and two lounge areas. Most rooms, including three of the bedrooms, have double doors onto an outside terrace giving a light and airy feel to the place. There is also the outside 'room', with table and parasol seating 10, and Dancook coal barbecue for entertaining alfresco on those long summer days. The property is equally attractive in winter with TV/selection of DVDs, log burning fire, books, board games and jigsaws.
There are 2 double bedrooms and 3 twins, which makes the house ideal for 2 families wishing to holiday together or a group of couples or friends enjoying a house party together. The master double has a spacious en suite shower room featuring a large 'wet room' shower, wash hand basin and toilet. The second double and one of the twins share the family bathroom, featuring bath, separate shower, his 'n hers basins, bidet and wc. Up a timber spiral staircase you will find 2 twin bedrooms sharing a shower room with shower, basin and wc.
Access to the property is via an attractive external staircase to reach the upper terrace and front door. It is therefore not appropriate for anyone requiring disabled access. The property nestles in the foothills of the Pyrenees and is built into the side of the hill, so what is ground floor level at the rear of the property is first floor at the front. This can be seen upon careful examination of the photographs.

About the host
Hosted by Michael Cutteridge

I bought Villa Les Aygals in 2002 when my children were still young and it has been, and continues to be a much loved family home. We all live in London and have busy lives, which makes it difficult to get there as often as we would like, so we decided to share it with you.
I originally thought about buying a second home in the UK and checked out Dorset, Devon and Cornwall. It quickly became apparent that I could never be a week-ender due to the horrendous traffic and started to set my sights further afield. We can leave London, drive to Stansted, and arrive at the house in France in the same time it would have taken to drive to Cornwall on a good run!! I have never regretted my decision to buy in France. My children and I enjoy a wonderful property with a swimming pool, sunny days all year round, a different culture, the stunning mountains and proximity to the sea. And now it's available to share with you! I hope you choose to stay and come to love the area as we do.

Why they chose this property
I chose to buy in a village with proximity to local amenities as I didn't see myself as the sort of person (with teenagers) who would want to be stuck half way up a mountainside with an hour's drive to the nearest pint of milk! We love being a part of this French community and employ a local french gardener and 3 ex-pat English people to help us look after the property. During your stay you may get to meet Debra our housekeeper, Bernie the pool man, Don our handyman or Franck the gardener.
Our time in France generally starts with dinner in either El Tap or 66/20, both closeby in the village, to say hello to Jean-Louis or Sabrina who are your hosts, and to meet our feeding requirements before we get to the shops.
We are discovering the area all the time. New places open up and there are always our favourite haunts to go back to.

What makes this property unique
Villa Les Ayglas straddles 3 cultures. It is in France, but has a strong Catalan influence, you are in Catalonia after all! It is just 15 minutes drive over the border into Spain with its Costa Brava and the wonderful cities of Girona, Figueres and Barcelona. This area is an art lovers paradise. All the greats painted here Matisse, Picasso to name just two, and their presence can be felt as you explore the local area....such as the modern art museum in Ceret and in the bars of Collioure; over the border it is Salvador Dali at his museum in Figueres.
You are also in a most scenic environment with the beautiful Pyrenees, wonderful beaches and the picture postcard Ceret with its famous Saturday market. And lets not forget our lovely village of Maureillas which puts on entertainment most week-ends through out the summer months at its Parc de Loisir...... come and see the locals dancing their local dance The Sardanes, or enjoy the Paella and Mechoi evenings with music.......there is so much to do and so little time to do it!!!
