About this property

Lovely Townhouse with own garden overlooking the Square sleeps 2-5+ comfortably

25 Market Square is located in the heart of Melrose overlooking the historic town only minutes away from a wealth of restaurants, cafes and bar food with no driving home! There are many local tourist attractions on your doorstep - Melrose Abbey, Harmony House that hosts the Borders Book Festival, the Greenyards that holds the annual Rugby Sevens and only 2 miles away Abbotsford House with award winning visitor centre, the former home of Sir Walter Scott. It is worth viewing the Trimontium exhibition opposite your front door. The Great Scottish Tapestry now has its permanent home in Galashiels and is also well worth a visit. . Behind the house, there is a patio with table seating for 6 in a pretty garden leading down to a small wood. Just beyond that there is a free (approx. 20 spaces) car park that is only a few minutes walk back to your front door. 25 Market Square provides a wonderful central position from which to enjoy walking, golfing, fishing, riding, exploring local history or simply watching the world go by in this loveliest of Border towns. When you look out of the four, large picture windows of the reception rooms on the first floor, you can relax watching the comings and goings in the Square below. There, the historic Market Cross stands proud and wonderful array of individual shops that including a green grocer, a fishmonger, butchers, as well as a couple of small supermarkets are so easy to pop down to. You will have a grandstand view of the town’s many events, from festivals to pipe band competitions or you might simply choose to relax in comfort in the stylish sitting room or even take refreshments down to the garden.

This delightful property has a spacious kitchen/diner with a gas box fire for colder months as well as a separate sitting room with 2 sofas, a desk and a 2nd gas box fire. The house is also kept warm with gas central heating throughout. Note that both reception rooms can be bathed in sun well into the evening. The small bedroom on this first floor has its own ensuite. The two main double bedrooms are on the floor above and have the house bathroom between them. You can wake up in these bright, east facing rooms where the morning sunshine can be flooding in. From the windows there are lovely views of your garden, Nut-wood, Melrose Abbey (floodlit at night) Priorswood Gardens and one of the Eildon hills, that will transport you from the hustle and bustle of life in the Market Square. There is a third toilet on the ground floor in the inner hallway and the laundry area that leads through to the garden has a washing machine, tumble drier and butler sink and is a useful place to leave muddy boots and golf clubs etc.
One of our favourite morning walks is past the abbey, down to the river Tweed and across the Chain Bridge, where paths lead right or left along the river banks. If you continue straight on you will arrive in the village of Gattonside. Return back across the bridge and right to the Weir Hill, past the famous Melrose rugby ground where the Eildon hills form a magnificent backcloth. Children enjoy stopping at the Gibson park to play on the swings before wandering back through the town and returning home at the top of the High Street.

Different paths lead to the foot of the Eildons and the view of the Border countryside from the top is well worth the climb.

An hour’s journey by train leaving frequently from Tweedbank (3 miles away) transports you to the heart of Edinburgh where you can enjoy a full day visiting the sights without the hassle of having to park in the city.

There are also a variety of
outdoor pursuits in the area that include fishing on the River Tweed, fieldsports, horse riding, golf, lawn bowling, mountain biking, and a selection of walks including the Southern Upland Way, St. Cuthbert’s Way and The Borders Abbeys Way. Several festivals which include the Melrose 7’s Rugby Tournament,
the Borders Book Festival and the Melrose Festival, complete with its ride-out attract visitors, from far and wide. Thank you to our many guests who have left lovely reviews on-line and helpful ideas in our visitors book with suggestions of favourite places to visit and eat out. Hopefully you, too, will enjoy a wonderful visit to the beautiful Scottish Borders, Melrose and our Townhouse overlooking the Market Square.

A trip down memory lane visiting my Grandparents town & Christmas with family. A once in a lifetime opportunity bringing generations together was made extra special by this accomodation in a picture perfect location. We loved every minute of it. Walks around Melrose/local areas and time with family made this a very special trip. Any concerns were promptly managed, fantastic communication.

The property was ok quite comfortable.Found moving the bins quite difficult as the rubbish was not collected only the recycle, so had to take an almost full bin back through to the back garden. A nice central position and parking wasn’t a problem with the car park just a short walk away.

Perfect for our trip home to visit family

Beautiful flat in an ideal location. Very well equipped with everything we needed and although slap bang in the centre of Melrose it was very quiet and suited our needs perfectly. Katherine provided excellent communication with every instruction very clear and easy to understand. Loved every bit of our trip and would highly recommend this perfect accommodation.

Center of Melrose

This rental was above and beyond. It placed you in the heart of a beautiful town close to everything you could need. We frequented the restaurant next door and the Co-Op down the street as well as the really great breakfast shop Eden Cafe. My room had an amazing view of a beautiful piece of history (The Melrose Abbey). Just seeing that in the morning kept me in cheerful spirits no matter the weather. The home itself was clean and the beds were incredibly comfortable. Really helped the jet lag! I loved opening the windows to let in the fresh air in both sitting rooms. Unfortunately, I didn't know there was a button on the wall to turn on the oven.. :D That is really the only "negative" thing I could say. Would recommend this home in a heartbeat and can't wait to stay here again. Thank you so much for the warm and comfortable home!

Lovely place to join friends

The accommodation gives all in the group some privacy. The location suited our desire to see the Border Counties. We had good food in evenings and enjoyed making our own breakfasts in the very well equipped kitchen. The rear garden with its view if the Abbey is splendid. Lmwe all lived it. And everything worked perfectly!

Winter in Melrose

Earlier last year we were very fortunate to be able to stay for a month during summer at 25 Market Square Melrose. The weather was glorious and we enjoyed our stay so much we arranged to stay again for a month in December. The weather was not as good as summer but it didn’t matter because the townhouse is so cosy and comfortable. A kitchen for people who like to cook, comfortable beds, washer and separate dryer, close to everything in town and bus stop on the doorstep. We loved it and would highly recommend 25 Market Square Melrose.

25 Market Square Melrose

A very comfortable property in the heart of Melrose. A lovely sunny garden, a great kitchen with everything for people who like to cook and next door to The Ship, a great pub with lively outside space and good food. Although we were in town it wasn’t noisy at all. We thoroughly enjoyed our month there and would highly recommend it

Excellent

A comfortable, stylish house in a delightful town. Great views over the Market Square at the front and Melrose Abbey from the bedrooms. A very well equipped town - apart from no bank or PO. Lots of fascinating places to visit and the town museum explains the history through the Bronze Age, and the Romans to early Christianity and the destruction of the monasteries. A lot of stairs and a car park behind the garden might be tricky for the less mobile but a basically flat town makes walking easy. A wonderfully comfortable house to explore the beautiful Borders.

Melrose townhouse

We thoroughly enjoyed staying in this lovely property. The views, restaurants, walks and nearby towns made this a brilliant place to stay. The kitchen was well equipped and the place was always warm with lovely gas fires to make the evening cosy. We wished there had been a shower in the top floor bathroom- but the beds were super comfy and there was loads of wardrobe space as well as a washer and dryer. Can’t recommend enough.

Lovely property in an ideal location

We stayed here for a week in August and absolutely loved it. Lots of space in the house for 4 adults and 2 teenagers. We enjoyed sitting by the large sash windows with a drink watching the life in Melrose go by. A great base for walking. We climbed the Eildons, and did the river walk every morning. Lots of lovely shops, pubs and restaurants on the doorstep - we especially enjoyed the Kings Arms, the Provender, and Marmions (we thoguht Burts overrated). We went to Edinburgh by train (1hr from Tweedbank) twice, very easy journey and lots if parking by the station. We also visited Peebles and the Neidpath Tunnel which the teenagers really enjoyed. The house was the perfect place to relax after a busy day. Well equipped with space for us all to relax without being on top of each other. We'll definitely be back.

A great property in a great location

This property was in a perfect position to enjoy Melrose and the surrounding area. Right on the town square, local restaurants, cafes and Melrose Abbey were literally minutes' walk away (or in some cases seconds!). Having a Co-op and a Spa within walking distance was also very convenient. The property is of a very good size, with spacious, light and airy living and dining rooms, plus a well-appointed kitchen. The two main bedrooms were also large and, because they are situated at the back of the house, noise from the square doesn't penetrate. All of this, plus the very reasonable rental charge, means that i would definitely recommend staying here if you're looking for a great little town in an excellent location to explore the Borders and Northumberland National Park. Also Edinburgh is only an hour away by train, with free parking at Tweedbank Station. Thanks for a great stay.

Why they chose this property

25 Market Square has been in the family since 1860 and the shop below was our drapery business until the 1980's when it was sold leaving the original house and garden to the next generation.

Our Townhouse in Melrose was too difficult a home to give up, and as we had family still living in the town, we decided to refurbish the house, set up our holiday lettings, allowing us the chance to visit as often as time allows and give guests a taste of what the Scottish Borders and especially Melrose have to offer, helping the local businesses thrive with our new and returning guests enjoying the local shops, restaurants, pubs and cafes.
