There are three main ways to reserve a time or play The Old Course when staying at our cottage at Kingsbarns or our apartment at St Andrews.
1. Apply through the Links Trust Advanced Reservations process before September for play the following season.
2.Just before or during your visit to St. Andrews, apply through the Ballot for a remaining time. The Ballot results are announced two days before the date of play,
To try and play the old course you will need to go on the St. Andrews links trust website , below I have include what you have to do to try and play the old course.
Ballot
Despite its overwhelming popularity, the Old Course still upholds the tradition of a ballot (lottery) drawn two days ahead of play (except for Sundays and tournament days). This enables golfers who are in the area to still have the opportunity to play the Old Course during their visit. This reflects the public spirit of St Andrews Links and its commitment to staying as open and accessible to all golf lovers.
**June,July and August are our busiest months and therefore a minimum stay of 4 nights can only be booked during those months.
Ballot Results
Visit the Ballot Results page for details of the latest Old Course Ballot.
How to Enter
To enter the ballot there must be at least two players and all names, Home Clubs and handicaps will be required.
You may enter online, by phone on + (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) or in person by visiting The Old Pavilion or one of our Clubhouses.
The ballot closes at 2pm two days before you hope to play. Entries are accepted on the day the ballot is drawn or on the day before, once that day's ballot has closed (approx 2.15pm).
As the Old Course is closed on Sundays there is no Friday ballot.
If you are available to play at any time this will give you the best chance of success.
The result of the ballot is available after 4.30pm the same day. You can check the Ballot Results page or phone back after this time.
If successful, a current official handicap card (Golf Club affiliated to a Golf Union/Association) record or certificate must be presented to the starter prior to play. Maximum handicaps - 24 Men, 36 Ladies. Unfortunately we do not accept letters of introduction from your local Club Professional. Please check in for your round at least 20 minutes prior to your tee time.
Trolley restrictions apply on the Old Course. Find out more here.
If you are unsuccessful you may wish to check in at the Old Pavilion on the day of play and the staff will do their best to join you with a two or three-ball group playing the Old Course. With patience this can be successful but we cannot give any guarantees.
Duplicate ballot entries will be disqualified.
Please note that pre-paid green fees for any other course cannot be transferred as part payment for a successful ballot on the Old Course.
3.See the Old Course Starter on the day of play (hopeful golfers often queue very early in the morning) about the possibility of obtaining an available tee time that day.
For the non golfer there is an abundance of other activities including exploring several castles in the area, the quaint fishing villages, coastal walks, boat trips to the Isle of May, St Andrews and further afield Edinburgh.
