This is a charming, spacious house in a quiet village, not far from restaurants, cafes and supermarkets in Vire and Sourdeval and about an hour from pleasant beaches.

Fantastic location
My family had a fantastic holiday. The location is ideal for the attractions in Normandy. The village of Vengeons is quiet with the restaurants and shops available nearby in Vire. Recommend the walks near Sourdeval and Mortain.

An excellent holiday
There were three generations of our family together for this holiday and La Masion Calme had everything for everyone. We all really enjoyed the barn. The rooms were perfect for a great family holiday and the table tennis table was a real bonus. The area was beautiful with plenty to do for all the family. Thanks to Martin and Pella for looking after us.

Dear Jane,
Thanks so much for your kind review. It really is appreciated and I'm really glad you had such a good holiday. Yes, there is so much to do in the area - you can head off in any direction and find places of interest. I really want to explore 'Swiss -Normandy' to the east, but never get round to it. And even your 2 weeks of holidaying will hardly scratch the surface. Yes, Martin bringing in the table tennis table for the summer was a very good idea. Hope you can return sometime,
best, David
Comfortable house full of charm with excellent facilities. Friendly and helpful owner. The surrounding area is stunningly beautiful. Very quiet and peaceful.

The Gite was clean and comfortable. UK tv was intermittent, which the owner did his best to sort out.

Great stay at Le Maison Calme
Our family of 7 had a great stay in this renovated barn home. Le Maison Calme is in a peaceful village where we enjoyed morning coffee on the back patio and walks along the rolling hills. When we encountered some transportation challenges, the owner was very responsive to help us find a solution. Highly recommended.

We were looking for a comfortable place in the Normandy region to spend a quiet week, and this house was fantastic!!! We live in an urban rat race, so having the time to check out on vacation is paramount. The house has EVERYTHING we could gave needed. We spent time using the great kitchen, and appreciated the fabulous dining table as well as the living room area that served well for a down afternoon. The host was beyond amazing and made sure communication was easy, complete, and appropriate. There was not one thing we would have changed about the accommodations or our stay. Highly recommend!!!!

Super cozy house, lovely stay
This house is probably one of the most comfortable we've been at. The weather in Normandy these days is really awful and we didn't notice it at all being in the house. Cozy, warm and with everything we needed. It perfectly fits 2 couples with children. It is less than an hour drive from the main Normandy sites to visit and the village is extremely quiet.
The house was quite tidy, but it needed a deeper cleaning. Owner, despite not being in the neighborhood, was always available and helpful through email and phone. Thanks David!
It is definitely a lovely house we recommend, especially in Spring or Summer time!

Great location and property- friendly sheep!
We had a couple of nights in the village on the way down to Brittany. The house is well equipped and in good order with plenty of room for four adults. Good size bedrooms and comfortable beds. Good to have two bathrooms both with showers. Although there are no shops in the village, Sourdeval is only 5 minutes down the road by car. It has everything you want from a couple of small supermarkets, cafes, restaurants, boulangeries and so on. In the other direction you can be in the larger town of Vire within about 10 minutes. It's a great location to explore Normandy and provides peace and quiet after a days travelling. Martin the local caretaker provided a wealth of information and made sure we had everything we wanted. Even the neighbours sheep were friendly and would come by to get a stroke! Only snag at time was the dishwasher wasn't working but David the owner had let us know beforehand so no complaints there- meant my daughter learned what 'washing up' means. Great time and weather perfect as a bonus.

Ian,
Thank you for your review. I'm very pleased it was what you were looking for. I'm sorry the dishwasher wasn't replaced in time for your stay - there is now a new Bosch working away, so you daughter won't need to exert herself if you stay another time,

One of the best holidays we have taken
We have just returned from a wonderful week away in this fantastic cottage.
Communication with the owner prior to our visit was extremely helpful and Martin, the caretaker called in to welcome us and was on hand if we needed him throughout the week.
This cottage is deceptively spacious throughout. Very well equipped with everything from a dishwasher, washing machine right through to UK TV stations. We felt very much at home from the very start of our stay. The furnishings was very good quality and we found the cottage very well cleaned on our arrival. The property is well maintained.
The main bedroom has a lovely ensuite and was very spacious and comfortable. The second bedroom, again spacious and further bathroom are located on the same floor. There is a lovely bedroom in the attic space.
We loved the open plan layout downstairs and the back door led on to a spacious patio where we ate a lot of the time as well as playing table tennis as a family.
The rear garden is huge and I can imagine a wonderful place for children to play whilst parents watch from the patio.
A great location for visiting some wonderful places. We visited Mont St Michel, Bayeux town and the tapestry, D Day landing beaches and museums and local towns and villages. There is a wonderful cycle path nearby too.
We mainly shopped locally in Sourdeval, just 4 km away with a small supermarket with its own butchers and a bakery opposite. The vet here was fantastic, helpful and also spoke English very well. Vire is also not far away with Carrefour and Lidl as well as many other lovely shops - definitely worth a visit too.
There is very good wifi here and we had a very good mobile phone signal too.
We plan to return here again for another holiday and would highly recommend this place to all whether just a couple or a large family.

I am terribly sorry about these issues. We are replacing a heater, but nevertheless, the remaining heating should have provided heating to 20 degrees. And I am updating the instructions for renters to adjust the heating. I am also leaving better instructions how to change channels for the television. The Dishwasher should absolutely always be clean and empty on arrival. I have spoken with the local manager and cleaner to ensure all these issues do not arise again.
You will be welcome to come again,
David

About the host
Hosted by david winstone
I am a health professional and bought this property in 2005. It became a labour of love in designing and renovating the property between 2010 and 2012. It has been converted to a very high standard with solid oak flooring and staircase, underfloor heating, and electric velux windows and blinds in the master bedroom.
Why they chose this property
It was a perfect balance of being easy to access from the ports, and also well positoned for both trips to the beaches of the west coast and also exploration into unspoilt rural Normandy. It is in a peaceful village, but not too quiet and remote - there are other houses around but no shops in the village. However the shops of Sourdeval are just a 5 minute drive away. I also enjoy the open air heated swimming pool in nearby Mortain. For a larger town Vire is just a 10 minute drive. One day I intend to cycle in a day on the dedicated cycle track to the Mont de Michel.
What makes this property unique
I wanted a holiday home which had a taste of luxury, spaciousness and calm. I enjoy the quality fittings and modern conveniences like broadband which keep me in touch with the world. Equally, I can turn it all off and enjoy quiet reflective walks with no noise nor reminders of modern life. It is a friendly village, generally quiet, free from traffic but not isolated. Overall, a perfect combination. Excellent garden for children, which extends down into woods. Or the gate down to the larger garden can be closed allowing a smaller area for small children to be supervised (or dogs too for that matter - fences are dog proofed with mesh). Foldable TABLE TENNIS table is easily set up on the patio for games for all. 2 bicycles are also available for use.
