About this property

Beautifully Restored Grade 2 listed Historic Barn

Dating back to 1663, our historic barn has been carefully converted to sleep four in a twin and kingsize double bedrooms. The comfortable self-catering accommodation is open plan, with views onto the downs beyond and a few minutes walk into the centre of Aldbourne, an attractive village with pubs and shops. The spacious interior leads onto a private terrace and path to off-road parking.

A blend of restored original features, and a carefully designed interior make this barn a really unusual and quirky place to stay! As you walk in you'll be surprised by height of the ceiling and the light playing through the funky lampshades... you'll see that downstairs Alma Barn is open plan incorporating a living room, dining area, fully equipped kitchen with a separate bathroom. Upstairs there are two mezzanine bedrooms, one with a double bed, the other with two twin beds. Lying in bed you'll get an amazing view of the incredible oak barn rafters and wind braces... enjoy the integrated Lutron light system with various settings, allowing you to regulate the mood. For the chillier times of the year, the Barn is kept lovely and warm by discrete underfloor heating which runs throughout.

Sheep often graze in the paddock adjoining the Barn, carefully watched by the red kites soaring above them - you can sit and watch from your own immediately accessible private terrace, ideal for that early morning coffee and croissant available from the excellent delicatessen in the village.

Wonderful stay in luxury barn

A very cozy space with a lot of comfort. Comfortable beds and cozy furnishings that make you feel right at home. The kitchen is simple, but everything you need is there. There is a terrace where you can sit outside with a view of the meadow. We stayed here with our 18-year-old daughter for a midweek and walked a lot in the area. Visited Bath. And enjoyed the small town of Aldbourne with a beautiful church from the 12th century where you can walk to and where there are two cozy pubs. At the Deli you can get delicious fresh bread.

Mrs

The barn was in a very nice village with a countryside view. Local people were friendly and there was a lovely deli come cafe. We went to the Battle proms at Highclere which I could recommend. This was only a short drive away.

Quiet, Clean barn conversion. Small bathroom but very hot shower. Kitchen has what you need. Amazing lights at night. Charlie is very polite and respectful. Open plan and beds are very comfortable.

Beautiful but not practical

The barn is very well rénovâted, very much in style, lovely details. But a few things to mention: The bathroom is extremely small. Compared to the large surface of the barn. The bedrooms are open spaces so there is no privacy. And The tv could be changed in a smart tv. I guess for 750 pounds for 3 nights you may expect something. So really beautiful house but not practical.

The Perfect Stay

My husband and I stayed at Alma Barn with our 21 yo daughter for 8 nights. We loved everything about it. The barn itself is beautifully decorated and has plenty of natural light and everything you need, along with a lovely host. It’s located in a very quiet and beautiful location that is a few minutes walk to the quaint Aldbourne with its wonderful cafe and pubs, and a good location for daily drives to other places in the Cotswolds. Our stay at Alma Barn couldn’t have been better.

Perfect for a cosy getaway

We had an absolutely amazing time in this gorgeously transformed barn. Well equipped kitchen, comfy beds, surprisingly high tech features with a rustic interior. It’s less than 10mins walk from the village centre which has a Coop and some nice pubs. If you’re looking for a relaxed holiday, I could not recommend the place more!

A beautiful barn and location.

Alma Barn was perfect for our stay. Such a wonderful and well thought through design. The barn has such a lovely warmth about it, it makes it harder to leave to investigate the surrounding beautiful countryside. We hope to return!

Perfect relaxing getaway

The barn is beautifully converted with everything you need for a relaxing stay. Check in was very straightforward with clear directions to the barn. We were very lucky with the weather but even on the rainiest of days this would be a really cosy getaway. We'd love to come back!

Would highly recommend

We stayed in Alma barn for a week and will definitely be coming back. The barn has everything you need and more and is in a great location, being just a 10 minute walk to the pub and village shops in Aldbourne. The barn is beautifully lit and the owners artwork dotted around the barn is a really nice touch. The beds are really comfy with adequate storage and mood lighting for added cosyness. You really can't fail to notice that the owners have put alot of thought into making the barn that extra bit special. We would highly recommend a relaxing stay here.

Much needed break

We really enjoyed our stay at Alma Barn. It’s a lovely, cosy place in a great location. People in Aldbourne are so friendly and the pubs were great despite the COVID restrictions. Had the fridge been working properly our stay would have been perfect but I’ve no doubt the owners will fix this quickly as they were so responsive to any contact.

Comfortable and cozy, yet modern stay, great location

The barn has been stylefully decorated and makes for a really comfortable place from which to visit the many beautiful things the surrounding area has to offer. Many great places to visit within an hours drive, and the village with some good pubs, shops and playgarden is just a small walk away. Owners are quick and friendly in their responses. Definitely recommended!

Lovely stay but.....

We enjoyed our stay very much, it was so nice to get away from London and just relax! The barn is beautifully converted, quiet and cozy. There's so much to see and hear, it was so nice to wake up to ! We love the booklet they gave us about the local wildlife as we are very much into that. What let the property down was the minor broken things, the flies and the cleanliness. There were coffee stains on the table and dirt in the grooves which wasn't great but the worst was dust. It was just so dusty. I have pretty bad asthma so we ended up vacuuming the place which isn't something you want to do when your on holiday. when we had the fan on, the amount of things flying out of the light shade was horrible. A few draws were unstable or broken and a fly trap would have worked wonders because there's lots of them. We also didnt get our honey from their bees which was a bummer! I just wish they took more care of the barn because despite these things it was so wonderful and we really wanted to visit again.

Gorgeous gem of a cottage

We had such a lovely stay in Alma Narn. The cottage is absolutely lovely with everything fitted to a vwry high standard. Charlie was incredibly helpful and easy to communicate with. Fenella's art pieces are astonishing and endlessly compelling. Aldbourne village in charming with many walks nearby. We also had lunch at The Crown - very recommended. Thank you both for a perfect stay!

Lovely country getaway in a picturesque village

It was a really lovely space and very welcoming. The only thing that wasn't completely clear in the listing is how open plan the barn is.

About the host

Hosted by Charlie Elms

Host profile image
Fenella Elms, ceramics artist, worked in the workshop at the far end of the long cottage. You will find some of her work in the barn and if you are interested Charlie is always happy to discuss her work in detail with you.

Why they chose this property

Alma Barn is attached to the end of a cottage where the owners, the Elms family, have lived for nearly 30 years. In this time the barn has been used for horses, cattle and lambing before special listing permission was given to restore the barn to make a holiday let from 2012.
