About this property

Unique Beachside Listed Cornish Engine House

CHECK-IN/CHECK-OUT ON MONDAYS AND FRIDAYS.
The Engine House is a unique part of Cornwall's mining heritage and beach culture. Featured on "Grand Designs" and "Homes by the Sea" it provides immediate access to the beach for amazing walks and awesome surf. It is comfortable for 6 (can take 8 with a sofa bed), with modern kitchen, central heating, wood-fired stove and outdoor pizza oven. A perfect base in the heart of Cornwall. Changeovers on Fridays, or Fridays/Mondays out-of-season. The Engine House in Porthtowan is a completely unique part of Cornwall's heritage and lifestyle. Built at the height of the Cornish mining boom, it is a Grade II Listed beachside property with infinite character, comfort and convenience. The reverse level layout gives stunning beach views from the open-plan first and top floor, and the wrap-around first-floor level deck with pizza oven, barbecue and outdoor furniture make for a perfect setting. In the heart of Poldark country, Porthtowan is located between Illogan and St. Agnes (known as St. Annes in the book and TV series) with spectacular countryside walks in both directions along the South West Coastal Path. Featured in Charlie Luxton's C4 Programme "Homes by the Sea" in September 2015, The Engine House is a genuine part of Cornwall's heritage. Charlie says in the show "I could live here - I could definitely live here"!. Other TV coverage includes Robson Green's Wild Swimming Adventure, when he swam in the Victorian tidal pool on the beach, describing it as "perfect". Kevin Mcleod briefly featured The Engine House in Grand Designs (Series 7, episode 18), where he said "The Engine House at Porthtowan is one of the more successful conversions I have seen. It is unconventional."...."It proves that it is possible to make a beautiful home from these industrial dinosaurs". All yours! We live in Truro, so are generally available to help with any issues. Apart from staying in a true part of Cornwall's heritage, Porthtowan is a seaside village with everything you might want from a Cornish holiday - a great Blue-Flag sandy beach, amazing surf with RNLI Lifeguards, long walks along the Coastal Path to the Chapel Porth National Trust Cafe, great food and atmosphere at the renowned Blue Bar (www.blue-bar.co.uk) and other village amenities including a pub, cafe, fish and chips, post office and general store. It is also centrally located for day trips to the beautiful cathedral city of Truro, Newquay, Falmouth and St Ives. St Michaels Mount, Padstow, Lands End and The Eden Project are all within in a 45 minute radius. There is a regular bus service to Truro and beyond from the village, and Redruth Station is only a few miles away. ACCOMMODATION - There are two double bedrooms and a twin with two 2'6" beds which can be joined to create another double if required. There is also a double sofa-bed in the top-floor lounge. Please let us know if you want this made up. BATHROOMS - The main bathroom contains a loo, sink and bath with hand-held shower but no screen between the main bedroom and the twin. There is also a wet-room with loo sink and shower near the other double room. PARKING - There is plenty of space for parking, although there is a lip on the drive and often plenty of sand which can make it awkward for low-slung or sporty cars. There is also free parking directly opposite if you struggle to get in. We really enjoy sharing our unique home with our guests, especially those who understand that owning a converted Listed Industrial Building on an Atlantic Beach is something of an adventure! The constant battering of the wind, salt and sand through the winter, together with the constraints of the listing (including single-glazed timber sash windows, open-tread wooden stairs etc.) mean that it cannot really match the comfort of a boutique 5-star hotel. We believe that the location, character and comfort represent great value for money, and a perfect setting for a unique Cornish Stay, as do so many of our regular and returning guests. If you have any concerns about accessibility or any other aspect of your accommodation, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Wonderful

Amazing location, wonderful and unique property. A fabulous part of the world and a perfect place to enjoy it from. The home was clean with good facilities (decent sized fridge, lots of space and relaxing areas, good bathroom and shower). Being ultra critical, there wasnt any pint glasses, but plenty of wine glasses, so cant really complain! The location right on the beach was stunning as were the views from every window. A perfect place to stay in a perfect part of Cornwall

One of the best located holiday homes in the UK

A beautiful old Cornish tin mine, engine house, located almost directly onto one of counties best surfing beaches with unique accommodation as well as being within walking distance of the village shop and pub( which serves great food). Not much more one could ask for!

Character holiday home

The location of The Engine House is great, right by the beach, and it is big enough for a 3 generation family group to have plenty of space.

Fab location!

Fab location, amazing property but is quite tired and in need of a thorough clean. Would’ve have been great to have a welcome pack/book with instructions (brief instructions sent on email) and there was no duvet for the pull out bed. Would stay again but would expect it to be cleaned.

A stormy seaside stay

This historic mill is an absolute must. Me and my family stayed the week of storm Ciaran and had a fantastic stay so close to the beach. It has everything you’d need, is wonderfully rustic and has been beautifully restored. The views are amazing and Porthtowan is a lovely seaside village.

Porthtowan Engine Room

The building was amazing, full of character and a great location right on the beach. It was let down by the cleanliness and the very uncomfortable beds, and according to the price I would have expected better. With a bit of attention to detail this could be a gem of a stay.

A beautiful property

Our stay at the engine house was so special. Such a unique property, we feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to live there for the week. Perfect location, being so close to the beach with spectacular views. We took full advantage of the outdoor pizza oven and indoor log burner. Robert was the perfect host and was on hand when we had a problem with the electricity (turned out it was nothing to do with the house, the whole street had an outage!) Missing the engine house already.

Wonderful property on the beach

We had a wonderful week at The Engine House, last week. The property is just about on the beach, with amazing sea views from most windows. It is very well equipped with everything you could need for a relaxed family holiday. We had a couple of goes with the pizza oven which was great fun, pizzas were pretty good too. There is a beach bar, pub, fish and chip shop and a well equipped village store all within a short walk, Redruth is a short drive away for anything else you might need. There are some lovely walks locally, and lots of interesting places to visit within a short distance. Thank you for a great holiday we would all love to return one day.

Wonderfully unique stay at The Engine House Porthtowen

What a wonderful and unique property and you can’t beat the location just steps to the beach! Robert was so responsive when we had any questions both before and during our stay. The local shop had everything we needed to stock up, plus a few local additions to bring back home. We ate out several times at the Blue Bar (our favourite) and twice at The Unicorn, which was OK. The Engine House has some of the best sunset and beach views from the top floor living room, that has the hammock and a daybed with pull out. On the middle floor is the kitchen and dining area and then out to the main entrance hall with the washer & dryer tucked away and the wet room, which was extremely handy to have! This area also has stairs leading down to a double bedroom (all the beds were very comfortable!). From the dining area you go down a different set of stairs to the twin bedroom and another very comfortable double bedroom with great views of the beach. Between those two bedrooms is a large bathroom. Outside the main and wrap around deck is stunning and the pizza oven was great to try, but we do think that practice makes perfect and we need more practice 🤣 Porthtowen beach is beautiful and lives up to its Blue Flag status and having it so close to the house was fantastic. We loved our stay in Porthtowen and The Engine House was just amazing, how can you beat staying in a piece of Cornish history! If we come back to the area, and I really hope we do, we will definitely stay at the Engine House again.

Highly recommend!

.We really enjoyed our stay in this sleepy beach town. All you need is within walking distance: a market, a tiny health food store, restaurants, a pub-like restaurant, fish & chips, footpaths along the coastline, the beach (and surfing), cool caves at low tide, historic engine buildings from mining, and ice cream with clotted cream. If you’re up for a long hike 3 or 4 miles each way, you can even hike to a slightly busier British town with traditional pubs, bakeries and cute shops. I highly recommend a car, however, so you can explore other towns along the coast. There are several castles 30 to 60 min away, including St. Michael’s Mount on a little island off Falmouth. The house is very cool and comfy. The owner is friendly and helpful. It’s an old engine house right by the beach. Thank you for opening your home to us.

Our perfect Porthtowan stay!

Our Engine House stay was beyond our wildest dreams. The house is charming and very well appointed. We had our Cornish cousins to dinner and we had plenty of seating and serving pieces for everyone. The bedding was cozy and comfortable. We had one little problem that Robert took care of very quickly. All in all, absolutely perfect!

long weekend in early October for 6 adults

individual stylish property, great fun to stay in. Ideal for the beach. You can watch the surfers all day from the windows, or as we did, run out for a dip in the surf most mornings. Pizza oven a real bonus, great fun. Only slight downside was the limited shower/bathroom facilities, and the parking is only for high clearance vehicles (free car park just opposite though)

Upkeep & Cleanliness let the place down

Great location and house. Sadly, the furniture needs replacing eg tub chair on the top floor is stained, curtains in one of the bedroom. Wood window frames are rotting and needs replacing. A lot of things need replacing and given a face lift.

Wonderful stay for my wedding

What a great stay. Robert was really friendly and helpful and the place was absolutely stunning. Really spacious, loads of natural light, just brilliant. It Is right on the beach and is an old stone building, so is a little damp, but it was not a problem once we had the heating on. A brilliant stay!

About the host

Hosted by Robert Salvoni

Host profile image
Having bought the amazing Engine House (property number 8125960) in 2000 and enjoyed every holiday and weekend we could possibly have there as a family from our London home, we fell in love with Cornwall and made the decision to move down full time in 2011. After living at The Engine House for a few years, we moved to a larger home nearby to accommodate our growing family, with the intent of moving back once we get rid of the kids! It is first and foremost a family home, rather than a boutique hotel, and we welcome guests who embrace all that makes Cornish Holidays special. Be careful - holidays in Cornwall can be addictive!

Why they chose this property

Cornwall's metals have been mined since Roman times, and the dramatic landscape owes much to the extraction of tin, copper and Gold. In the 19th Century, local boy Richard Trevithick developed the massive steam Beam Engines that allowed deep mines to be dug without flooding. These had to be housed in tall thin buildings called Engine Houses, the ruins of which punctuate the Cornish countryside.
The Grade II Listed Engine House in Porthtowan is one of only a handful that have been converted to residential use, and of these, the only one actually on a beach! This makes it completely unique, and a fabulous way of enjoying both the heritage and natural wonders of Cornwall together. Conversion and maintenance is always a challenge with these industrial buildings - no cavity walls or double glazing, but we hope you will embrace the quirkiness that makes it so special to us.

What makes this property unique

Apart from staying in a true part of Cornwall's heritage, Porthtowan is a seaside village with everything you might want from a Cornish holiday - a superb Blue-Flag sandy beach, amazing surf with RNLI Lifeguards, long walks along the Coastal Path to the Chapel Porth National Trust Cafe, great food and atmosphere at the renowned Blue Bar and other village amenities including a pub, cafe, fish and chips, post office and general store. It is also centrally located for day trips to the beautiful cathedral city of Truro, Newquay, Falmouth and St Ives. St Michaels Mount, Padstow, Lands End and The Eden Project are all within in a 45 minute radius.
