About this property
Fisherman's Cottage with WiFi and views to the harbour.
Our Fisherman's cottage is in the pretty port of La Rive, Mortagne-sur-Gironde. Mortagne is a lovely fishing village in the Charente-Maritime - only 20 minutes drive from the great beaches at Meschers and Royan. The village has all you need for your holiday - in the upper town there is a pizzeria, a bar, and all the essential shops including bank and post office. The cottage is just 100 metres from the port, where there are restaurants, cafes and a few shops - a boulangerie, a cabin selling freshly made hot dishes when you don't feel like cooking, and a little stall with fresh fruit, wine and other essentials ! The area is a haven for birdlife - there are wonderful walks out towards the Gironde estuary, where you can spot storks, herons, egrets and other waterbirds. The marais is perfect for cycling and there is horseriding available too. The house itself is an old fisherman's cottage, and was once an "epicerie" (a village grocers shop) and has a large open plan living area, with a well equipped kitchen, and 3 bedrooms. There is a brand new timber decked terrace overlooking the port, with table, chairs and barbecue. The perfect holiday house from which to visit the tourist attractions in the area - to spend long days on the nearby beaches - or to simply soak up the sun and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of this wonderful area of France. About the host
Hosted by Jo and Blue Walshe
We are Blue and Jo Walshe (Gites en Charente Maritime) and after spending lots of time in France, and especially in the Charente-Maritime area over many years we have finally done it and moved here ! We now live just a few kilometres away from our gite in Mortagne, which we bought in 2013. We have always loved France for its food, its wine, and especially for its way of life - we have found a little bit of paradise here - and hope you will too.
Why they chose this property
We fell in love with Mortagne when we first had a holiday here a few years ago, and we've come back many times since then - we love the marina with its restaurants and cafes - there is always something to watch, and yet it's peaceful and relaxing. There are beautiful walks from the port itself - and for anyone interested in birdwatching it's a must ! And when you can tear yourself away there are lots of nearby places to visit - from historic towns such as Saintes or Cognac, to bustling cities such as Bordeaux or La Rochelle, and beaches at Meschers or Royan, And when all you want to do is relax with a good book and a coffee or a glass of the local pineau - our little terrace is perfect.
What makes this property unique
Mediterranean climate, great restaurants, beaches, walks, river, countryside and places of interest - Bordeaux, Saintes, Cognac. Plenty to do or do nothing.
