About this property

Stunning uninterrupted moorland views over lake and Rough Tor

Mabel's Cottage offers a delightful rural retreat located on the edge of the moors and yet is only a few miles from the beautiful North Cornish coastline. The well known Port Isaac, Tintagel and Boscastle are all close by, along with the beautiful beach at Trebarwith Strand, and wonderful walks such as the Camel trail and St Necten's Glen to name but a few!
Climb the Tor, meet the local sheep, cows, chickens and ponies, listen to the birdsong. We have swallows nesting in the summer and the famous starling murmurations fly overhead twice a day from mid October until early spring. A real sight to behold.

Delightful cottage

Mabel’s cottage is wonderful inside and out, with beautiful views over the Rough Tor. Mabel’s cottage is an ideal place if you are looking for a peaceful place to stay away from every day hustle and bustle. Wendy and John are great host’s and very friendly. The cream tea on arrival was great and so needed after a long drive.

Beautiful cottage

Wendy and John made us very welcome. The cottage was spotlessly clean and there was everything we needed and more. We enjoyed the conservatory and the view across the lake also sitting on the viewpoint in the garden watching the swallows and the rabbits. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and the scones, jam and clotted cream were very enjoyable. We would not hesitate to recommend Wendy and John’s cottage.

Dream location, holiday apartment with winter garden

The holiday apartment is beautifully located - but a little out of the way. You definitely need a car. The cottage is tastefully and fully equipped. Everything you need is there and it was very clean. Wendy welcomed us with homemade scones and flowers we picked ourselves. John and Wendy let you use their beautiful garden for the duration of your stay, including the terrace with a view of the lake. The winter garden is a beautiful additional room. Wendy and John are extremely friendly and accommodating. I will definitely go there again because I really liked the area. I discovered a new "place to be" for myself there. Absolutly romantic

A very special place to be in Cornwall. We loved the tasteful furnished cottage and most of all the Wintergarden. Nothing than view is between you and the Bodminmoor. No house, no men - only the cattle, the Rough Tor and the lake, smoking in the morningmist. To sit in the cosy Wintergarden, reading "Jamaika Inn" wrote by Daphne Du Maurier, wich is playing in the Bodmin Moor and on Rough Tor was wonderful. Walking in the Evenings and mornings in the Moor around we enjoyed so much. Great Thanks to our very kind hosts, that we could experience that. Sandra and Anna Blume

Superb Location, Perfect Little Private Cottage, Wonderful Host

Imagine a beautiful Cornwall farm cottage set above an uninterrupted view of a quiet picturesque lake, all to yourself! That's Pennhalow Barn. What more could we have asked for? Simply nothing. But we also got a great little private cottage, with an attractive bedroom, a fully equipped kitchen, and an amazing sunroom overlooking the lake. Sunroom even has its own telescope to view the stars on cloudess nights. Did I mention the 3 pet lambs and chicken, Hilda? Wendy, our host, went out of her way to ensure our 6 nights in this magical corner of Cornwall, a few miles from the coast, were the absolute best. Hated to leave.

A perfect Cornish countryside retreat

We loved this little place for two full weeks of slow living. Decorated tastefully in shades of stone and sand, the whole place felt restful and fitting for the stunning setting. It was fitted out to the highest standards too. Everything provided was great quality, from crisp bed linen on a fantastic mattress to gorgeous toiletries from the nearby St Kitts herbery in the shower. Sadly we can't replicate the bathroom at home, but we did go to St Kitts to buy some rosemary & bergamot shower gel. It was really well located for trips out to explore the wonders of North Cornwall and there was a wealth of stuff on the doorstep - I'm not sure Cornish beaches come any better than the nearby beach at Trebarthwith Strand: it was perfection for pootling around peering into rock pools when the weather was cooler and for swimming on a hot day. But we were happy staying in and around the property too, and spent plenty time relaxing in the garden with a glass of wine, a good book and that spectacular view of the reservoir, as well as running & walking the country lanes and identifying more species of wildflowers/butterflies/damselflies than we've ever seen before. The hosts were friendly and generous with their bounty, leaving us to enjoy their garden in privacy, and giving us new-laid bantam eggs, gooseberries, blackcurrants and redcurrant from their bushes as well as all the help and advice we needed. Wholeheartedly recommend this place for a couple who love a rural idyll and appreciate a tranquil bolt-hole after a day exploring the busy tourist attractions on the coast.

Schönes Cottage

Sehr schön eingerichtetes Cottage. Küche mit allem was man so braucht.

Absolutely stunning property, luxury accommodation, the most beautiful cottage we have ever stayed in! Incredible views, breathtaking, the peaceful atmosphere and uninterrupted views, just unbelievably fabulous! The cottage is first class, beautifully furnished, with everything you could possibly need. Wendy and John are the most lovely hosts, so welcoming, and were so helpful with so much local knowledge and helpful tips and advice. The cream tea was a gorgeous treat, we can’t thank you both enough for such a fantastic stay! Tina and John

Simply perfect

If you want to experience Cornwall in its most natural form, then you've come to the right place. Even the drive to the apartment is an experience. But the highlight is the view of the lake and the surrounding countryside. A magnificent view directly from the living room. Furthermore, the accommodation is tastefully furnished with great care and is very clean. The very friendly owners, Wendy and John, live right next door and are happy to help with any questions. Overall, a perfect accommodation, and one would give more than 5 stars. Thank you for the wonderful experience.

Perfect tranquility

This cottage is about as good as they get. Absolutely beautifully presented, very clean and comfortable. The ‘sun room’ was an amazing space to enjoy the views and the nature which surrounded us. All you can hear is birds and wildlife. The hosts, John and Wendy live in the farmhouse onsite, but you never see as they respectful and discrete. But if you do need assistance (as we did due to our car braking down and having no transport to return home) they went above and beyond what is expected, for which we are truly thankful. We would recommend this property to anyone who wishes to experience the peace and quiet it offers, and time to get away from life’s rat race! We hope to return in the near future.

Why they chose this property

From the minute we saw this 150 year old converted barn we fell in love with it. We really do have the best of both worlds.. from the stunning views over Roughtor, lake and moorland, to the close proximity of the rugged north Cornish coastline with its quaint fishing villages and wonderful surfing beaches.
If it is a peaceful and quiet retreat you are looking for then Mabel's Cottage is the place to be.
We love it here and hope you will too.
