Guest comments: Having just returned from Spain I thought I would drop you an email to tell what a fabulous time we had. The apartment was beyond our wildest expectations, and far better than anything we have stayed in previously. The view from the balcony is stunning. We made it up to Sierra Nevada on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day - the children played snowballs on Christmas Eve, then on Christmas morning while the turkey was cooking we went up again so that they could do some tobogganing (fresh snow had fallen overnight), then on Boxing Day we all went up yet again. I thank you for making this one of our best Christmas', the attention to detail made all the difference. Bruce and Sandra
'We had a great time in Guejar Sierra - everything was spot on. Apartment is lovely, everything we could need and with those fantastic views from the terrace. You can happily use me as testimonial's case for the apartment as I can't recommend it highly enough.'

The penthouse is clean and comfortable and the view is breathtaking. Both Clare the owner, and Rosie the property manager, are caring and responsive. I highly recommend staying at this property!
7 weeks surrounded by beautiful views, copious things to do (skiing, walking, cycling, eating & drinking!) and lots of lovely people to meet.
Already planning next year!
A lovely location and the owner was so very helpful with information to make our stay wonderful. We did leave early but only because we were worried about getting snowed in as one of our little Yorkshire Terriers became ill and needed veterinary attention. Many thanks to Rosie..,,an absolute gem. Kind regards Gail and Grant Murray
Stunning Apartment, perfect base in the Sierra Nevada
A stunning apartment, spacious, clean, amazing views, close to all local amenities and the ideal base for those interested in exploring the local area. Great communication with the owner and property manager and clear instructions on how to get there. The apartment is fully equipped with everything you need for your stay. Secure parking in a locked garage. A wide range of local walks and activities are available . Only 30 minutes from Granada airport, plenty of walking available from the doorstep and and those interested in cycling, there is a lung busting climb from the village which is regularly used in the Vuelta up to the ski resort of Pradollana. We would definitely recommend this apartment for your stay

Thank you Gary for your review and I'm glad that you had such a good time. You're right that the region and village are known for cycling. When 'la Vuelta' comes through the village on the mountain stage you can watch the riders make there way up to Sierra Nevada from the balcony. Thank you again and I look forward to welcoming you back very soon.

Great location
I had a wonderful week here, the apartment is in a great location in a lovely village. The village has enough amenities to get by, and plenty of good bars and restaurants. It is less touristy than many of the surrounding towns which gives it a more genuine feel, and bustling with locals in the evening. You're also just within the Sierra Nevada with several walks starting from here. The apartment balcony (pictured) is South facing and provides spectacular views throughout the day.
Granada is within easy reach, either with a 40min bus ride (around 1.50 for a return and the return leg runs from Granada until 10pm). Its a simple drive too, around 20min if you park in the Alhambra, then another 20min or so walk into town.
I hope to be returning soon.

Hello Owain. I am so glad that you had a fantastic time. You are absolutely right that it is a fantastic location. Close to the beautiful city but in a tradtional village with fantastic views. It really is the best of both worlds. You are right about the easy drive to the Alhambra. There is also a little minibus from the Alhambra so you don't even need to walk into the city!! I agree that the village is well equiped. Everytime we visit we find another new little quaint bar or eatery. The local cuisine is truly delicious. Thank you for your comments and I look forward to welcoming you back to the Mulhacen penthouse soon.
We really enjoyed Staying at Clare’s place in Güejar Sierra. It was a terrific base for two weeks, we hiked, went to the ski resort to hike and have lunch, visited Alhambra and Granada and had lunch in Pinos Genil. The bus service was terrific and for $1.80E to Granada and $1.50E to Pinos Genil, a bargain as not to drive and put up with traffic and parking. We cooked in a lot for breakfast and dinner, the pots and pans were terrific and made cooking easy. The balcony had great views and we were able to eat our most evenings. We would highly recommend Clare’s apartment, the DVD’s made for fun nights along with making popcorn. Rosie was terrific and was very helpful with information, especially the tips for the market and roads to go hiking. We will be back, thanks Clare.

An excellent place to stay
Our family (me, my husband and 10 year old daughter) stayed here last Easter for a ski break and had such a wonderful time that we are returning to do it all again at the beginning of March 2011. The apartment is ideal for anyone of any age who wants to be away from the tourist crowd but close enough to be able to visit all the wonderful things the area has to offer. The apartment is just like a home away from home and is extremely comfortable and cosy. The village also has everything you need - bars, restaurants, food stores and a great deli.
Yes, you do have to drive to the ski resort but at less than €20 a day for the underground carpark, it is well worth it.
The contact with the owners is very swift and informative and on arrival you are met by their representatives in the village. It feels like you are part of the extended "family" rather than dealing with a faceless business and i have no hesitation in recommending this as a great place to stay.

Hi Melanie,
Thank you for your comments. I'm so glad that you and your family had a great time. I agree that the penthouse is perfect for visiting the ski area area in both winter (for skiing/boarding) and summer (for mountain walks/biking). For future reference there is free parking on the surrounding roads in the resort and parking is free in summer in the carparks as well as the surrounding roads.
Thank you again for your cmments and I look forward to welcoming you back to the Mulhacen penthouse soon.
Best regards,
Clare

Fab penthouse - perfect location and amazing views
Having driven to Granada from Malaga a couple of years ago, the journey was straightforward and your directions from the Granada to Guejar Sierra were spot on. Rosie met us in the hotel Juan Francisco before taking us down to the apartment where she talked us through everything we needed to know.
The apartment is fantastic - a real home from home - hardly needed to use the heating even though it was the middle of winter.
We tried some of Rosie's jam which was delicious - a nice touch having the jam to purchase after hearing about it.
The apartment is in a perfect position in the village - a short walk from all the amenities we needed.
Everyone in the village were very friendly and were very patient and understanding with my feeble attempts at speaking Spanish! We particularly enjoyed the tapas and service in the Juan Francisco hotel bar.
There is a lovely little gift shop just up from the square where we bought some lovely pottery whilst we were waiting for our takeaway pizza one night! The shopkeeper was brilliant and even gave us a lovely Sierra Nevada guide book.
After picking up our skis we took the very steep and winding short cut from Pradollano back to the apartment......not for the faint hearted especially as two of our group suffer from vertigo!! It couldn't have been that bad as we came back that way every day after that - although I wasn't as keen driving up as I was coming down!
Blue skies and sunshine for three of the four days we were skiing which was lovely. The snow was generally good but a few odd pistes were closed due to lack of snow.
It was a great experience skiing on New Year's Eve then going back to the village and celebrating New Year in the square with the locals.
We enjoyed it so much we have booked again - must remember to buy party hats and plenty of cava to take to the village square on New Year's Eve!
Would love to visit in summer too as the scenery is amazing,
Thank you

Great Penthouse, but in need of a lot of TLC
Mulhacen Penthouse, Guejar Sierra, Sierra Nevada, Granada.
It’s a great flat with fantastic views and a good position. It has a large terrace which overlooks the lake. The village and little bars and restaurants are really lovely.
Unfortunately, the air conditioning wasn’t working and there were no fans. It was 35 degrees! We rang and told the key holder, Rosie. She apologised and said that we should hoover the outside unit, which we did but it did not make any difference. She said that she would get an engineer out the next day. In the meantime, she did bring us two fans, which unfortunately made little difference to the overall heat in the apartment. Then, when we spoke to her the next day she told us that the engineer would not be coming. We were told by Rosie that the previous people who were there were also too hot, so it clearly was not working properly then either.
The Ikea sofas and pedestal chair in the lounge were very grubby. The shower curtains were awful and all the windows and frames needed a really good clean. There was only one bedside light between all of the three bedrooms.
The crockery desperately needs replacing, and everywhere needs to be redecorated and thoroughly cleaned.
We had to sweep the terrace ourselves and one of the plastic loungers was broken and the other was really tatty. There were no cushions for the chairs. The terrace table and bench chairs also needed replacing.
Anyone planning to visit this apartment in the summer months needs to ensure that the air conditioning is fully operational and that the apartment has been cleaned thoroughly, otherwise, like us, it will mar their stay.

Thank you for your comments regarding the penthouse. It is a great apartment, perfectly positioned with stunning views. I am sorry that the air-conditioning broke down during your three day stay and I am sure you will understand that mechanical failure can happen anytime, even with the best maintained equipment.
It is the first time we have had a problem with the unit and it is now fixed. Having checked with the previous guest it would seem you may have taken their comments out of context; the heat was purely related to the weather, not the air-conditioning. When you did report the break down late in the evening we were happy to provide you with fans to help with the cooling and Rosie delivered these at close to midnight. An engineer was called first thing the next morning. Unfortunately the engineer could not attend to the unit until after you left. When Rosie mentioned the cleaning of the outside unit she did not expect you to do this and was merely commenting on something she would try herself the next day.
The cleanliness of the penthouse has always received very high praise as you can see from previous reviews. I understand that you pointed out a small mark on the shower curtain. It would seem this mark may have come from one of my daughter’s crayons and had been missed during our usually stringent checks. The curtain has now been replaced.
The upholstery in the penthouse has now received an additional clean ahead of its schedule.
The penthouse was decorated and painted throughout in April of this year.
I am not sure why you have commented that there was only one bedside lamp. Two bedrooms have bedside lamps and the main bedroom has two ceiling lights with switches next to the bed, therefore not requiring a lamp. If one of the lamps was not working then this could have been easily rectified with spares that we keep in storage. Additionally any chipped crockery has been replaced.
The terrace was swept and cleaned for your arrival as it is for all guests. The broken lounger that you reported has now been replaced and we have in the past not supplied cushions for the outside furniture. However, we always strive to provide guests with a pleasurable stay and have therefore taken note of your comments and cushions are now available for guests to relax and enjoy the fantastic views provided by the terrace.
Thank you again for your valuable feedback and I hope to welcome you back to the Mulhacen Penthouse soon. Best wishes,
Clare
El apartamento es muy bonito y limpio, y las vistas son fantásticas.
Clare y Rosie han sido muy amables y disponibles, y la comunicación excelente.
Muchas gracias!
This property is very homely and well equipped. A lovely and private outdoor area with breathtaking views was most welcome after a day of exploring. The village shops are only five minutes walk away to buy supplies. I would definitely recommend this property and hope to return to some day.
We really enjoyed staying at this property. The small town of Guejar was lovely, a pretty, friendly and unspoilt town that gave a real flavour of Spanish life. We appreciated the views from the terrace across the valley, mountains and down to the lake and loved swimming there! It was fabulous to walk the two or three minutes into town to buy churros for breakfast, to sit in the square with drinks and tapas or wander through the little streets.
Clare responded quickly to any query we had before going and was really helpful in providing extra information about the fiesta taking place while we were there. Rosie was absolutely lovely and so helpful! Thank you both of you.
The house was clean and comfortable, we appreciated having 2 bathrooms as there were 5 of us staying. Our only (very slight !) concern was that it could have done with a few more utensils in the kitchen - I didn't want to put the dishwasher on for a very small load but there wasn't quite enough in the way of plates/glasses etc ...as I say a very minor concern!

Thank you Dora for your detailed excellent review. I'm glad you had a great stay and were lucky enough to be there during Fiesta. A great opportunity to be part of a traditional Spanish custom and enjoy all the free entertainment and tapas!
The kitchen is well equipped with cutlery, utensils etc for eight people. I completely take on board about you, not wanting to put the dishwasher on after every meal and I'll make sure a few extra utensils are available if required. Thank you again for your review and I hope to welcome you back to the Mulhacen Penthouse soon. Kind regards, Clare

Fantastic Apartment
We had a great time...fantastic apartment and was particularly impressed with the kitchen which was very well equipped…fantastic views from the balcony.
Loved the Spanishness of the village and the welcoming locals...the free tapas with every drink were great. Saw some great celtic musicians jamming on the Sunday in one of the many village bars..a mix of Spaniards, Irish, Scottish, English and Americans up from Granada...a very pleasant surprise!
Had a couple of days on the coast with temperatures in the high 20's. Also a couple in Granada....one at Alhambra (fantastic) and one in Granada walking around...again fantastic....Rosie's advice to take the bus was clearly the best option, especially as our rental car was upgraded to a BMW 7 series...2.2metres wide...great on motorways, but far less so in the streets around the village square which we encountered on our arrival!
The Sierra Nevada is great walking country...we did a few short ones...love to return and take on the more challenging routes.
All in all a fantastic holiday, especially pleasing as it was a family gift to my wife on her 70th birthday.

Superb modern penthouse, in great location, with fabulous views
My son and myself were met by Rosie, who showed us around and provided us with all of the information that we needed. The penthouse was spacious, very comfortable and was very well equipped. The large balcony / terrace area had unobstructed views of the village, the mountains, valley and reservoir. A lovely place to eat and drink, enjoying the sunshine, after a day's skiing.
In late March, we found that the property was so warm that we only needed (the very efficient) heating system on for 10 to 15 min.s, in the morning and the same in the evening. Leaving from the front (higher level), it was a short walk up to the many tapas bars / restaurants. In each, the welcome was very friendly and there was always an element of surprise at what we would receive, with every drink.
The village is very attractive, with drinking fountains at various locations. We topped up our 6 ltr. container, with beautiful mountain water; far superior to the supermarket product.
Clare and Rosie told us of the short cut to the ski slopes, which we used every day, although on the last day we had to turn back, near the top, as a few cars could get no further because of ice. It's not the place to be in icy conditions but the views, looking down on the village, are superb.
Most days, we parked above Pradollano, in the Penones car park but, on the first day the ski pass kiosk was closed, as a result of deep snow, and we had to ski down to the village base, in order to buy our cards.
I finally got to see Africa, from 11,000+ ft in the Sierra Nevada.
Can't wait to return to Mulhacen. Geoff T.

A beautiful, well presented property with stunning views down the valley and up into the mountains
Guejar Sierra is a lovely little Spanish town and a pretty simple drive up from Malaga. The apartment itself was lovely. There were 6 of us in our party (2 9yr olds) and we never felt like we were on top of each other. 2 good sized bathrooms, which was a real bonus and all the modcons you would need in a holiday let. The bedrooms were comfy and had enough space to not feel like you were crammed in. A nice lounge and dining area that lead out to a great balcony with fantastic views. We were there for the skiing, which myself and my wife were dubious about, being so far south. We couldn't have been proved more wrong! A great amount of snow, awesome weather and a wonderful beginners area at the top of the gondola and some decent runs too. We spent most of our time with the others in our group as it was their first time skiing so didn't get to go all over the mountain as we were teaching them the basics, but what area we did cover we were impressed with. Rosie told of us a short cut that zig zagged up the mountain to the main road which made Sierra Nevada about 20 minutes away. The resort itself looked good with bars and restaurants everywhere. We have looked at accommodation there but its twice the cost and doesn't look half as good as what the apartment is, so were justified in our choice. We've been skiing all over Europe, America and Canada and the accommodation is right up there with the best of them and for the sake of a 20 minute drive and the chance to stay in a typical Spanish village it was well worth it. We will definitely be returning next year but for a week - that's how impressed we were. I would make sure you have google translate on your phone if you don't speak Spanish as some of the restaurants struggle with English but it made it enjoyable and we all managed to muddle through in the end!! Overall a great holiday and I must thank Clare for all her help with my endless questions before we left England and for letting us stay in her lovely 2nd home.

About the host
Hosted by Clare Whelan
My husband and I fell in love with Granada. The stunning views, fantastic food and history were hard to resist. We also love winter sports as well as relaxing by the beach and could think of no other place in the world where you can do both of these activities in the same day! We knew that in Guejar Sierra we really had found the perfect holiday location. A beautiful quiet village that was close to a historic vibrant city and within easy driving distance of a ski resort and beach. No matter what time of year we visited we would always have a fantastic holiday. Since purchasing the property our two fantastic children have been born and we can honestly say that the location is perfect as well for a family holiday. The village makes children very welcome and there are a couple of parks for them to play in too. Granada offers the best science park that we have ever been to and of course the beach is only 50 minutes away.
Why they chose this property
We chose this property because it has probably the best views in the village. It is the top floor of a small and quiet building with uninterrupted vistas of the mountain and reservoir below. It is ideally situated only a couple of minutes from the village with its lovely cobbled streets and fabulous little bars. The village is traditionally Spanish with daily visits from the bread van, fish van and fruit van, just listen out for the pip of the horn from the van! However there are still lots of small shops to get your essentials if you miss the van service!! The village is only 20 minutes from Granada, a vibrant city with so much to offer. The world famous Alhambra Palace dominates the city and is a Unesco world heritage site. It is breathtaking and an absolute must if visiting the area. Granada also offers tree lined streets, quaint bars, fabulous restaurants and flamenco! The ski resort of Sierra Nevada is only 20 minutes from the penthouse and offers some of the best and sunniest skiing in Europe. The season is long and often starts in November and ends in May. But there are also so many other activities in the area including walk/treks, mountain biking, horse-riding and paragliding.
What makes this property unique
The penthouse is situated on the top floor of a small, quiet building that is built into the hillside. It has no adjacent neighbours and is very private. This ensures that you have a peaceful holiday in a stunning location. The terrace has wraparound views of the mountain range and is the perfect spot to enjoy a meal and a drink with friends or simply to relax with a book and cup of coffee. I am happy to help with all aspects of your holiday planning and I will be pleased to put my specialist knowledge to use, having worked in the travel industry for many years. Many of my guests visit year after year as it is very easy to fall in love with Guejar Sierra. Please feel free to ask any questions about the Mulhacen Penthouse in Guejar Sierra.
