The owner of the holiday flat was not on site at any point during our stay. There was no key box. The owner contacted us unsolicited via WhatsApp – and therefore outside the travel portal’s official communication platform – to say that the key could be found in a jam jar under the barbecue. The flat itself is tiny and certainly not suitable for five people. There were three of us staying there and we had to live out of our suitcases, as there was nowhere to store our clothes in the flat. The flat had only been cleaned superficially. The oven was completely caked over, and the baking trays inside were covered in dust. The flat was cluttered with old junk; for example, an old, dusty electric piano had been left in front of the fireplace. The barbecue was overgrown with plants, and the bicycles were dirty and in a dreadful state of repair. Worst of all, however, was that the shower had suffered water damage. Water was dripping from the first floor, where the bathroom was located, into the kitchen-diner below. There were two ceiling lights right next to it. Fearing an electric shock, we didn’t use the shower after that. According to the owner, she couldn’t find a plumber; instead, she wanted to send her neighbour, a certain Nicolas, round to us. No repairs were carried out during our stay. We’ve never had a more creepy holiday flat!
