Four Horseman Experience- Layden House🍀🏈 Former Owner Elmer Layden

🍀🍀NOW BOOKING 2024 ND FOOTBALL SEASON! 🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈Availability includes ND vs. FSU game, JPW, and ‘25 Graduation. Bring the extended family!

Our convenient and historical location is a Notre Dame Football fan favorite! Make your Fighting Irish weekend complete by enjoying a piece of Notre Dame's history right next to campus in beautiful Coquillard Woods.

Layden House was built in 1927 by Russell Smith, the developer of the historic area and founder of Coquillard Woods Social Club (now Morris Park Country Club).

Four Horseman, Elmer Layden and his wife Edith were residents in the 1940's during his time as Notre Dame's Athletic Director and his years as The Commissioner of the NFL.
Elmer Layden was one of the distinguished members of Notre Dame football's 1924 team under Coach Knute Rockne. Together with Harry Stuhldreher, Don Miller, and Jim Crowley they comprised the winning backfield known as the Four Horsemen.

The house is within walking distance (1.5 miles) to campus and all the entertainment surrounding it (including Eddy Street Commons, The Linebacker, Mitch's, The American Pancake House, Nick's Patio, Starbucks, and Martin's Grocery Store).

This beautiful home was built in1927 in the French Tudor architectural style and features 6 bedrooms including one king size, three queen size, two full size, and one twin trundle.

Fully remodeled, Layden House includes all the charm of a home from its era as well as the convenience of modern amenities (including air conditioning, fully stocked and modern kitchen, laundry, and free Wi-Fi).

Outdoor entertaining area features fireplace and three separate patios - one for morning coffee, one for dining, and one for an evening fire. In the time the home was built, the rear lawn was used for croquet matches. There is a child's playhouse in the fenced in yard as well.

Dining Room seats 12 and is the hub of the home. While the kitchen is smaller, it is fully functional with every amenity for preparing large meals. You will want to stock up on bags of ice when you get here for the two giant coolers for use during your stay.

Extra large driveway can house 4 cars...in addition there is legal street parking. Garage parking is not available. NOTE: Be sure to remove valuables and lock vehicles as the popular neighborhood for high-end rentals can sometimes attract car break-ins.

No ND Parking Pass? No problem. Layden House is readily accessible by Ubër/Lyft or a short walk (1.5 miles).

Make your memorable Notre Dame weekend unique with a stay at Layden House!

Awesome place for a Notre Dame weekend
We loved this quirky, charming historic 100 year old home. Great gathering spaces and dining area. Well stocked kitchen, large dining table that was perfect for dinners. Beds and rooms worked well for our group of adult friends and couples. The beds were comfortable and the linens fresh and lovely. The outdoor patio and fireplace was wonderful. A very ready walk from campus (the group that walked home from the game actually arrived a bit before the group that drove home). Communication with Melinda was rapid and easy. We had to call her to find the back-up propane tank and that was instantaneous. We found gifts of coffee cake and some delicious candies left for us on arrival. The 4 star for accurate description: lists 2 twin beds in basement and in living room. There were not. Had large comfortable sofas, but not mattresses or sleeper sofas. One of our number chose to sleep on the sofa and had no complaints. No hot tub either, which was not a deal breaker, but would have been fun. Hoping to be back next year!

The Fisher Family
This house has so much history. My husband graduated from ND in 1965. My daughter graduated in 2000. We had our 6 children and 2 grandchildren and my sons in laws who had never been to ND. The house is very comfortable. I love the dining table. It seats 12.

Wonderful Property
My family came together from across the country, from Seattle to Boston, in order to attend a ND game. My father is a '62 grad and my brother is an '85 grad. The property accommodated our large extended family. There were plenty of sleeping accommodations and bathrooms. The dinning room and family room had plenty of room for us to eat together and watch Rudy in comfort! The outdoor patio and fireplace area is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy a nice cocktail after a Notre Dame win! Would definitely stay there again! Go Irish!!

The Four Horsemen -Landry House
The house is perfect for celebrations, family reunion or just a fun weekend! We had Family fly into Chicago/S Bend for our daughter's Graduation, and a friend with her parents came by afterwards to enjoy supper and celebrate - so about 16 of us eating, visiting and enjoying our time. The house was so accommodating for this crowd. The HOST family is Amazing! They were quick to respond to any text messages and answered questions- when I couldn't find something! Definitely recommend to anyone that needs lots of space- a downstairs bedroom/bath was awesome for my 87yo mother n law; above garage bedroom was perfect for my 18yo son- the others slept on 2nd and 3rd floor of the main house. Bathrooms for all! Great Layout for such an older home! A GEM!

Irish Getaway
The property is beautiful. Lovely neighborhood and certainly very large for indoor and outdoor activities. Mindy Evans was very gracious and accommodating. The house was not near as clean as I would have expected for paying a sizable fee. Trash was left in kitchen. I slept in lower bedroom. When I removed covers there was a blue protective pad yet on sheets. They did not appear to have been changed. And I’m sorry I did not ask about having a pet. I am allergic so odor in garage and dog hairs on couch was very challenging for me. I should have asked as I said. Did we have a good time? We did! But not sure I could rent again. It is farther than a mile from stadium. Quite a hike for some. Younger kids did fine. Thus the varying numbers on survey. Never done a rental where folks live there so may be my naĂŻvetĂ©. Good and not so good experience. By the way, while looking for the baby's toy a dead mouse was found under the couch in the living room. Not good. I would rate over all experience a 3. 5. Thank you. We loved the Layden House!
This is a very cozy house. Although it was September, it was great that the house had a cozy fireplace in the living room. The weather turned cold and rainy and we huddled around until late at night telling stories. The house is also incredibly spacious. Great weekend!

A great place to stay for a unique experience in South Bend
Property was even better than expected. Lots of character for a very unique experience. Very clean. Tons of accommodations in a very nice, charming neighborhood. A few of us decided to walk the approx 2 miles to Notre Dame for the football game. The others took an easy Uber ride. Really enjoyed the house including the basketball hoop in the driveway, tree swing in the front yard, beautiful yard and patio. Great communication with owner throughout the stay. Highly recommend.

Warm, Inviting and Convenient Home for your ND Weekend
We took our three girls to their first ever ND weekend, plus grandparents. Could not have been a better home for the experience. Homeowner is a total pro, the home was ready, on time, spotless, with easy instructions on where to find things and how to utilize the home. We were a short drive to campus near the stadium, and were able to fund ample parking opportunities between the home and the stadium. Everyone commented on how warm and inviting the home was and how nice it was to be there, it exceeded all expectations. Would highly recommend.

Great house for ND Games!
Had 10 people in for the Michigan game and there was plenty of room for everyone. Great location as well. We had no problem Ubering anywhere we needed to go but probably could have walked to Eddy St as well. Mindy and Rob were awesome hosts and took care of anything we needed. We would stay here again.

Fantastic Stay at the Four Horseman Home
We arrived at the Four Horseman home on Friday afternoon for a Saturday evening Notre Dame football game. We immediately loved the home as we pulled in the driveway. The house was clean, beautiful and ready for our arrival. We quickly headed out to the pep rally and drove for about 5 minutes and arrived at campus. We returned later that evening to enjoy dinner and the outdoor fire place was fantastic. We all spent the evening outdoors enjoying the perfect setting for conversation, fun and plenty of room for all of us. Twelve of us stayed at the home combining two teenagers, two young adults and parents. The house suited all of our needs and had every amenity you could need. We spent most of Saturday shuttling back and forth to the game and the house is conveniently located to the stadium. Some of our group even chose to walk back and forth to the game. We hope to return next year for another game and would definitely stay at the Four Horseman home again.

Great home for family trip to Notre Dame
We really enjoyed our stay at the Layden House. The owner was great to work with and accessing the property on check in day was a breeze. We had a bunch of family in town for the Notre Dame Football game and this house worked great for our trip. There were plenty of bedrooms, bathrooms and space for 7 adults and 3 kids. The home was in a great location from campus which made it easy to get back and forth from the pep rally and football game. The kids loved the tree swing and we enjoyed the history of the house. We put the grill and large dining room table to good use for a steak dinner after the football game. Our only regret was it was a bit too warm to sit outside by the fire place. We will definitely be back if we make another trip to ND with a big group.

About the host

We have always loved older homes. Our first home was in Chicago, IL and built in 1870, our second was in Granger, IN and was built in 1987, our third was in Chester Springs, PA and was a townhome built in 1997. Ever since returning to the area in 2014 we knew we had to get back to our old house roots. Although we have only lived in Layden House since 2015, we already know that this house will be home for a long time. We love the neighborhood and the accessibility to Notre Dame and Morris Park Country Club.

Why they chose this property

Accessibility to University of Notre Dame's campus. Four Horseman, Elmer Layden resided here in the 1940's

What makes this property unique

Historical home once owned by Four Horseman, Elmer Layden who resided here in the 1940's. Please keep in mind that this house is an older home (nearly 100 years) and with that comes the unique character that comes with age.
