About this property

Countersett Hall, historic manor house, sleeps 7, nr Bainbridge, Askrigg & Hawes

Surrounded by some of the most beautiful landscapes to be found in the Yorkshire Dales, Countersett Hall is a stunning grade II detached holiday property, nestled in the tiny hamlet of Countersett, perched above the beautiful Lake Semerwater. 5 mins drive from Bainbridge and Askrigg and 10 mins drive from Hawes. There are two double rooms each with king size beds, one twin room with two full size single beds and one single room with full size single bed. Extremely comfortable good quality pocket sprung mattresses and professionally laundered hotel standard linen. There is a recently refurbished family bathroom, shower room and downstairs toilet. Free wifi available, two wood burning stoves and gas central heating, a smart tv with access to Netflix, plus games, books and board games. There is a staircase inside the house and steps between rooms and two short runs of steps to the car park, probably not recommended for people with mobility issues.
The house has a fascinating history. There is a local legend that Mary Queen of Scots stayed at the house one night in 1568, on her way to Bolton Castle. The hall was also home of Richard Robinson, the first Quaker in Wensleydale from the 1650s. Illicit meetings were held in the parlour of the house and George Fox, the founder of the Quaker movement, stayed at the house in 1652 and 1677. During major updates in the 1970s, archaeologists discovered a dwelling on the site from as early as the 12th Century. The house has a wonderfully calm, welcoming atmosphere and retains many historic features, such as oak panelling, stone flagstone floors, mullioned windows, beamed ceilings and stone fireplaces.
The house has been completely renovated and offers a comfortable home with all the mod cons that a holiday maker would wish to have. Further information about Countersett Hall can be found online. Best rates direct.
The market town of Hawes is just a short drive away, as is Bainbridge and Askrigg. Guests will enjoy the stunning scenery, peace and quiet of this beautiful Dales location. We recommend standing in the garden on a clear night – the night sky is something to behold in this area of minimal light pollution! Rolling hills, quaint villages and traditional village pubs are all within easy reach. There is plenty of off-road parking. Shop, pub and restaurant 2 miles. Fishing, cycling and horse riding all available nearby, along with numerous public walkways. Paddle boarding and kayak hire and tuition available at Semerwater nearby.
The house sleeps from two up to seven. The rates given are flat rates, with no additional fees, so the rates are the same regardless of guest numbers. Beebole Cottage is a one bedroom cottage located opposite the house, which can be rented out separately, or jointly with the main house – this has a king size bed and sleeps two people, see my other listing. It has its own entrance and garden.
All towels and linen provided, along with tea, coffee, sugar, milk and biscuits, soap, foil, washing up liquid, olive oil, salt & pepper, dishwasher tablets, sponge and cloth and two tea towels. Complimentary basket of logs, plus kindling and firelighters. The house and cottage linen are both professionally cleaned to a hotel standard.
Gas central heating, electricity, bed linen, towels and Wi-Fi included. Telephone for emergency calls. Lawned garden with terrace, two sitting-out areas with garden furniture. The house has large gardens on all sides. Ample parking. Padlocked cycle store.
Note; Strictly no pets, sorry. No events, extra beds or smoking inside the house. Young children need to be supervised in the gardens and upstairs (ie unfenced drops in the garden). We do not supply a cot or high chair for health and hygiene reasons, but you are welcome to bring your own.
Numerous things to do nearby, waterfalls, scenic walks, great mountain-biking, paddle boarding, kayaking, fishing at Semerwater, 5 minutes walk from the hall, alpaca trekking at Semerwater, climbing, caving, horse-riding, castles, stately homes and museums. We provide a file of information about the house and its facilities and lots of local tourist information at the house, along with walking books.
Food scene; we can recommend the Yorebridge House Hotel in Bainbridge and Simonstone Hotel near Hawes for formal meals and afternoon tea, The Wensleydale Heifer in West Witton, The Kings Arms pub and The Crown in Askrigg for dinner, The Bake-well Cafe in Askrigg and Cornmill Tearooms in Bainbridge for lunches and takeaway food and fish and chips in Hawes.
Elijah Allen in Hawes sells an excellent range of local foods, there is also a large Spar in Hawes and small grocery shop in Bainbridge, Campbell & Sons in Leyburn excellent for groceries. Large supermarkets at Catterick. Tesco, Sainsburys and Asda will all delivery groceries to the hall.
Strictly no pets, smoking or events, sorry. No caravans or large campervans please due to restricted access to the car park.

What a special place!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this very special place! Very well stocked with everything we needed; wonderful location in the Dales for poking around nearby villages and walking; great communication with the host. We loved everything about this place! This restored home is very charming, especially for those of us coming from the US! We're still reminiscing about our time there. We are hoping to visit again sometime in the not too distant future. Thanks so much for sharing this lovely property!

Wonderful atmospheric hall
We stayed at Countersett for a week in mid-May. A family of 5 adults, the accommodation was perfect and the Hall itself is wonderful. It dates back to 1650 and has been perfectly refurbished. Countersett is in a remote part of the dales a few minutes walk from Semerwater and is perfect for a walking holiday. We will definitely be back!

We are a small family-run business. We take great pride in offering clean and comfortable holiday accommodation for our guests and are on-hand at all times to answer any queries.

Why they chose this property

The house has a magical atmosphere and is located in some of the most spectacular scenery to be found in the Yorkshire Dales. You really can get away from it all in this peaceful location. The house has a fascinating history and we have worked hard to update it sympathetically, whilst offering all the mod cons that holiday makers expect to find. There is a one bedroom cottage, Beebole Cottage, located opposite the hall, available to rent separately, or together, with the main house, so that large groups of up to 9 people can holiday together. Search Countersett Hall for further information and discounts.

What makes this property unique

Peace and quiet, nature in abundance, clear starry skies, fresh air and stunning views. A chance to truly get away from it all. A 5-10 minute walk to Semerwater lake, which is perfect for swimming, paddling, fishing, kayaking and paddle boarding (Alfresco Adventures or Yorkshire SUP can be pre-booked for lessons and equipment hire). Secure bike store. Five minutes' drive from a 5* restaurant and a good choice of pubs. Close to Askrigg and Hawes, including visitor attractions such as Wensleydale Cheese Visitor centre, Dales Museum, Bolton Castle, Aysgarth Falls plus many other fascinating sites. Beautiful walks from the doorstep, walking books available at the house.
