About this property

The Beach Break at the West End of Oak Island

Summary:

Enjoy a quiet Oak Island vacation at this mid-century modern beach house. 60's surf vibe with a perfect third row location for families with walkable, low traffic access to the beach and sound. The beach at the access by the house is typically not crowded even on holidays. The sound access nearby is frequented by kayakers/paddle-boarders.

Historic Southport and Wilmington are nearby (25 and 40 min respectively) with just over an hour drive to Myrtle Beach. Mid-June-Aug Sun-Sund stays only.

The Space:

The house has been updated with new flooring, living room furniture, and beds. An outdoor shower, picnic, charcoal and gas grill are provided.

Bed linens and bath towels are provided with an additional fee built in to the booking.

BEACH TOWELS ARE NOT INCLUDED.

There are a generally a few beach chairs available to use, but I advise guests to rent or bring their own.

Guest Access:

Storage area with washer/dryer.

Beach chairs (2-4), beach cart, and toys in the storage area are available for use at no charge.

A Weber 2200 propane grill is available in the storage area. A propane tank is provided and can be restocked at the convenience store on Middleton if needed. Weber 2200 grill propane cartridges can also be purchased at Lowes, Walmart.

Unfortunately, I cannot guarantee propane availability or the exact number of beach chairs due to guest usage.

The Neighborhood:

The west end of Oak Island is very laid back. The beaches are not crowded and there is little traffic. The houses in the area are mostly vacation rentals, but there are a few permanent residents. The house has sound access on 39th a short walk away for paddleboarding and kayaking. The point (2 miles away) at the far end is a great place for walking, finding seashells.

Getting Around:

Golf cart and bike rentals are available in the area (not included with the house). See my Guidebook for recommendations.

Other Things to Note:

We provide a few essential amenities to get you started on your vacation, including a couple rolls of bathroom tissue, paper towels, hand soap, dish washing soap, a couple laundry pods & dishwasher tabs, as well as some extra trash bags. You'll want to bring more for use throughout your vacation.

Your linens will be delivered in wrapped and labeled packages just prior to your arrival by a professional linen service company, and include sheets for all beds, bath towels, hand towels and wash cloths for each individual, kitchen towels and dish cloths, as well as bath mats. The house will have pillows, blankets and quilts. You'll want to be sure to bring beach towels!

Guests must be 25 years or older to rent the house. Exceptions may be made upon request.

The house was purchased in 2017 and I will be updating the decor over time. Some of the current images do not reflect all of the changes and hope to have some profession photos this spring.

Interaction with Guests:

I respect my guests' privacy and do not visit the house when booked. The house is now co-managed by Mariah Brazil who lives on the island and myself. Mariah will respond to all urgent requests. I work in the ER and am not always available to answer my phone immediately. I respond as quickly as possible and always within the same day.

About the host

Hosted by David Laughlin

Host profile image

I have lived in Asheville since 2000 and started visiting Oak Island around that time.

Why they chose this property

I am a mid-century modern fan and wanted a place with an older beach house feel. The walk-able uncrowded beach, sound access, lack of traffic, and laid-back feel of the west end of the island were an added bonus.

What makes this property unique

Access to both the beach and sound within walking distance.
