We had a nice relaxing time at the cottage. Really enjoyed the beauty and the sounds of nature that you don't hear in the city and the beautiful Big Rideau.
Excellent time had on Big Rideau. Nice cottage with all required amenities. Would definitely rent again. Thanks Scott for the opportunity to have great family memories.
A great place for a family summer vacation. Big Rideau lake is ideal for our boat and water sports activities. The cottage was perfect for our three generation family. It was well equipped and comfortable. Nice decks and dock. The owner was super responsive and supportive. All in all, great fun.
We enjoyed our late summer getaway. Although the water was cool, one of us enjoyed a few swims. The other enjoyed casting his fishing line (but not catching anything).
The cottage was quite comfortable and well equipped - classic Ontario cottage.
The only point of caution is the 66 steps down to the lake. Anyone with mobility or breathing issues will have difficulties.
The property was well described as per the advertisement. The cottage was very clean and very modern. The lake was great for swimming, kayaking and paddle boarding. The only item we were disappointed with was the fridge. We found it not to be fully functioning and as a result we lost some food.
Very nice, well located, very clean, well equipped cottage in the heart of the Big Rideau. Scott is an excellent host, and takes time to ensure guests have a great stay
We had a great stay. Very comfortable beds, big gas bbq, new HD tv, new quiet dishwasher, and 2 fridges and a chest freezer for lots of storage.
Beautiful scenery, quiet area, sounds of loons every night, humming birds, owls, woodpeckers, etc. Very nice deck and dock areas with lots of seating. Cottage had lots of utensils, pots, and pans.
Thanks Scott.
The cottage and listing is completely accurate.
The cottage is laid out very nicely for larger families or a group of up to 8. The master bedroom has an awesome mattress and a wee ensuite. It's in a group of 3 bedrooms at one end of the cottage, with a king bed/room with the best lake view on the other side of the cottage, separated by the main bathroom and kitchen/livingroom/dining area in the middle.
Kitchen is well stocked, love the dishwasher, and two bathrooms was nice. One thing I wasn't expecting was a delightful screened porch; perfect for games on rainy days. Two items of note: 67 steps from the actual cottage floor to the bottom of the stairs enroute to the dock... plan ahead when you make the trip. Trust me on this. The other item is that you will want to bring your own drinking water to supplement that which is provided.
The swimming is fabulous, but do consider bringing a "swim buddy", or stay close to the dock. The boats fly by in the channel just in front of the cottage on their way to or from Narrows Locks. Swimmers are not their priority. The cottage is on the Rideau Trail so the walking in the area is interesting too... lots of wildlife.
If it's rainy or you get bored, there are plenty of things to do in the area... Kilborn's in Newboro and the quaint town of Westport are just 15-20 minutes away.
Scott and Heather were both hospitable and very helpful to us.
This was our first time renting a cottage in Canada. Scott was very helpful and prompt to answer any (there were quite few of them) questions we had. The place is great and it is all a cottage is supposed to be imo (of course this comes with a disclaimer of a first-time renter). For us the place was amazing, we enjoyed swimming in the lake, the water is just superb and clean. The stairs are really not a big deal and I found them to be quite the part of the charm of the whole place. The fact that cottage is slightly above ground is just AMAZING. The feeling of sleeping among the trees and enojying the beautiful porch in the shades is just right for the overall experience. The cottage is well equipped with everything for those who like to cook and BBQ (being of European descent I do not find BBQ to be cooking :))) Joking aside, we would gladly go to this cottage again and recommend to our friends without any reservations. Thanks again to Scott !!
This cottage has everything we needed . It was so spacious and well taken care of by the owner . The check in process was so easy. Tonnes of beds for your guests ( and very comfy as well ) . Lots of space to play games on the lawn , and a large dock to sit and relax. Water front was clean for swimming. This cottage is very easy to get to , and close proximity to perth and west port. This cottage surpassed my expectations and I hope to rent in the near future again.
Wonderful family vacation, cottage was very spacious and clean. Amazing waterfront for swimming, boating and fishing. Fantastic host who answered every question and went out of his way to ensure our stay was easy and enjoyable! Thank you!
Great spot to relax and enjoy Big Rideau Lake. Overall the cottage was good, well equipped with all the necessities.
However the listing was not fully accurate, the listing stated that the cottage had air conditioning, washer and dryer and internet available. None of those where provided, the windows definitely where not the best. Moths small flies and mosquitoes could enter the cottage even with the windows closed. No lights where available in the screened in portion of the deck, an no lights on the stairs down to the dock. A label was stuck to the breaker stating that that breaker is to be left off.
The stairs down to the dock where uneven which could pose a safety hazard.
The deck out on the lake was very nice and provided a great spot to relax after a long day of fishing, however the floating dock was a bit sketchy with a lot of large boat traffic in the area the dock moves a lot, small children should not be left on the dock alone.
Don't get me wrong my family had a good time at the cottage and enjoyed staying there, but this cottage does not command the asking price per night when the listing is not accurate.
We had an amazing stay and a great time at the lake!

About the host
Hosted by Scott Cuthbertson
My sister and I are the second generation owner of this family property which we built in 1974 and extensively renovated in the spring of 2017 redoing the kitchen, bathrooms, wiring, flooring and waterfront.
Why they chose this property
This property is about 90 minutes from Ottawa, 3.5 hours from Toronto and has great water, very clean, good fishing, good boat access, good road access but is much quieter than other areas such as Muskoka.
What makes this property unique
Screened in porch is great to spend evenings in. Two fridges and chest freezer for all your goodies. New high end dishwasher, sink etc. ensures you spend more time enjoying the property than cleaning up.
