About this property
1828 Vermont Cottage Feet From The Famous Battenkill River
WELCOME TO THE HISTORIC SAMUEL BENEDICT HOMESTEAD
Located on the southern bank of the picturesque Battenkill River in West Arlington, Vermont, the historic 3 bedroom cottage, built in 1828, offers the perfect setting for a genuine Vermont getaway. It sleeps up to 5 guests, has a full kitchen, 1.5 bathrooms, and more than its share of rustic charm. Skiing and shopping are nearby, and there is fly fishing, kayaking, swimming and tubing just steps away. Additional amenities include an outdoor patio, modest WiFi, Bluetooth audio, Smart TV, record player, books, games, and more.
The cottage has sat at the edge of the Battenkill since the John Quincy Adams administration. Originally part of a much larger family-owned parcel, Samuel Benedict was its builder and original owner. He’s buried just 3 miles away in the St. James Episcopal Cemetery.
While many guests enjoy jumping into the river's swimming hole from the single lane bridge, others choose to join local artists to paint landscapes from it. In fact, American artist Ogden Pleissner (1905-1983), in addition to painting western landscapes, images of the New England maritimes, and serving as a WWII war correspondent in the Aleutian Islands, also painted the river scene from the bridge directly in front of the house in 1978. The piece is entitled “The Battenkill at Benedict’s Crossing.”
This rustic property has the genuine Vermont flavor to satisfy the solitary purist, but enough creature comforts to make microwave popcorn and stream Netflix (most of the time). We hope to be able to share it with you soon.
