Following reflects a past visitor's VERY successful and satisfying stay:-
Hello Chris and Fiona,
I thought you might like some feedback on our holiday:
Sawmill Cottage felt like home; a good place to relax in the evenings after a busy day out. We effectively had five days to explore Northumberland but we squeezed in quite a lot. The Sunday was the only rainy day and we spent time indoors at Cragside which was full of interest and definitely worth a visit. On the other days we walked for miles all around Northumberland: from Craster to Howick Hall and back then onto Dunstanburgh Castle and back to Craster. Howick Hall gardens are beautiful and particularly the new sensory garden. A walk to Windy Gyle on a reasonably good weather day was very windy nonetheless! Great to stand at Russel's Cairn and look into Scotland one way and England the other. A visit to Holy Island and then to Berwick on Tweed where we walked the Elizabethan town walls on Wednesday. On our final day we completed the Rothbury Round; a day of beautiful weather and probably our favourite walk of the holiday with the bonus of a starting point 5 minutes away in Rothbury.
This was our first visit to Northumberland. We didn't realise how big an area it is and how many different experiences are available for holiday makers. The countryside is less frequented than most of the other areas we've visited in England and results in more unspoilt countryside and an abundance of wildlife. It has left us wanting to return and I'm sure we will in the not too distant future. Sawmill Cottage is an ideal base, quiet and perfectly located on the edge of the national park and just half an hour from the coast. We enjoyed our holiday. Thank you.
Regards,
Martin

Property is far bigger than we expected and there was plenty of space for a family of 5 and a dog. Very comfortable and had everything we needed for a self catering holiday. Situated in a lovely setting with good pubs in walking distance. Great walks too. Would love to come back and spend longer here.

So pleased you enjoyed your stay Charles! Don't hesitate to make contact when you fancy returning - or anyone you know wants to check out how reliable a holiday reviewer you are! VERY many thanks for your custom and your glowing comments. Very best wishes to you all. Chris & Fiona.
Comfortable with great view: owner’s possessions very much in evidence, sometimes crowding out space for one’s own stuff.
But overall , a good choice.

Seems cleaner may have left some items in wrong place -which unfortunate given that as primarily our holiday home rather than a holiday let there ARE more things than would be expected in a pure holiday rental property! Whilst guests invited to use anything that not locked away so as to, hopefully, enhance their stay their "space" should be kept clear of spare linen etc. Cleaner been spoken to - and apologised Judith.
Nice clean comfortable house. 3 bedrooms, lovely lounge with great view. Rothbury 2 min drive. Cragside 5 min drive. Hexham and Hadrians Wall 1 hour drive. Coast 40 min drive. Chris the host very friendly 👍

Spacious 3 bed , 2 bathroom cottage . Good location with a good pub only 5 mins away and Rothbury and Cragside ( a national trust property )only 5 mins drive away.
Lots of kitchen equipment in the property, eg coffee maker, cooking utensils, etc, so all you need for self catering. Great to have the 2 bathrooms. Plenty of books and jigsaw puzzles for rainy days.
Fabulous cottage in a quiet setting. Airy and light & welcoming. Nice big dining kitchen with (more than!) everything we needed.
View from sitting room over the hills was lovely. A great position to trek out from - so near to Cragside National Trust, which is a must!
We also visited Wallington & Gibside NT & Holy Island.
Thankyou for entrusting us with your home from home - we will definitely be back to explore more of this beautiful area.

Take care
Lovely 3 bedroomed cottage in a very quiet village, no obvious shops but 2 very nice pubs serving good food. The cottage is extremely well equipped , the lounge with a balcony is upstairs for very apparent reasons once you arrive.
My granddaughter is only 2.5 years old but she managed the stairs very easily, nice a gentle. Also equipment available for a baby/ toddler.including, travel cot, stair gate etc.
We will definitely stay here again. Great property.

VERY MANY THANKS for your enthusiastically encouraging comments Ros - much appreciated. Northumberland clearly didn't disappoint.
So pleased you enjoyed yourselves - and that I was able to get the plumber out on your first day! Hope the journey home was not too grueling for your grand-daughter. Look forward to welcoming you again. Best wishes.
Two retired couples, we have just had an excellent stay at Sawmill. Very comfortable, extremely spacious and yet cosy, the location and facilities of this property made it an excellent choice and it was perfect for our needs. The large dining kitchen is well supplied with all equipment and utensils that are often missing from rented accommodation. Excellent powerful downstairs shower, and both bathrooms kept in pristine condition. Plenty of hot water, and responsive heating system. Staircase up to first floor is fairly steep but the handrail on either side made it all very accessible for those with any mobility issues. Upstairs lounge has a beautiful view, and the balcony is a real bonus. Some have commented on the preponderance of owners’ items around the house but in our view this just added to the feeling of being in a home from home. What might be of interest to others booking Sawmill is that the Spar shop, a few minutes walk away, has an excellent range of goods. We had taken almost all our food and drink requirements with us but could easily have got what we needed just around the corner! Finally the level of communication from the host both before and during our stay was excellent.

Mixed feelings
Good location for where we wanted to visit. Lovely garden and good weather to enjoy it. During cooler months the conservatory would be very pleasant. House was generally clean enough, clean linen and comfy beds, so good nights sleep made this a pleasant holiday. The disappointing part of the house was that all cupboards had something in them, from extra duvets etc which will be useful in the cooler months (but more practical in vacuum bags) to out of date food stuffs dating back to 2014, which we chucked, in order to have some space for our food. We cleaned the fridge, freezer and cupboard space we cleared and given the good quality of cleaning in the rest of the house I would expect it will stay clean. But packing up and checking the house was clear and that we had all our stuff was made all the more difficult by so many cupboards and draws in the house containing the owners possessions. On the plus side the owner called on the first day to check all was okay and was ready to send out a fixer for the couple of broken items which we declined but I'm sure will be fixed for the next tenants. Neighbours were lovely, but a key safe would make for an easier exchange of keys.
Well equipped had everything you needed. Handy for a super pub next door. Spacious and excellent showers. As it’s a holiday home also there was loads of owners belongings around house and in kitchen cupboards.
Well provisioned cottage in a beautiful and quiet location, with an excellent pub next door. Plenty to see and do within an hour's drive. The host was very flexible and helpful in adapting to our last minute changes of plans due to the Covid pandemic.

Sawmills was perfect for our holiday in Northumberland. The house was very clean, and had everything you might need whilst away. Our girls loved the selection of games and DVDs for them to try out too! The balcony was beautiful for an evening glass of wine - what a view. The location was perfect for us with lots to explore nearby - we could easily have stayed longer than the week we had booked. Chris was very helpful when we had questions. We really enjoyed our stay.

Lovely well equipped cottage in a beautiful quiet area. Chris is an excellent host and easy to communicate with. Area round cottage not so easy to navigate by foot. My son and I like to run Sheep ok but not so keen on cows 🤣 Some lovely areas to visit within 40mins both coastal and inland. Fill up your car in advance Nearest petrol station appears to be in Alnwick. Pub next door great and food good.

Good place for Father's Day !
If you come back - as we, of course, hope you will - you'll see the petrol station and shop that is being built just outside the village. That will make life easier and add to the amenities.
Best wishes

The cottage is in a great location for exploring Northumberland and is surrounded by amazing scenery. Chris, the owner, is easy to contact and is very helpful. The cottage is extremely spacious and the living room upstairs has a nice outdoor balcony area to make the most of the surroundings. The cottage is as shown in the pictures and is as described by the owner. It definitely is a family home, as opposed to a typical holiday let. You will see family photo's on the walls and some of the owner's personal possessions in the house. There's so much crockery/cutlery/kitchen equipment - the best equipped place we have ever stayed in! Also, the bed in the upstairs bedroom is huge and so comfy. We took 2 cars, but found the parking was tight for both, so parked 1 car on the main road nearby, but it wasn't an issue. The Three Wheatheads Pub, just around the corner, serves good food/big portions and the beer garden also has the lovely view. We were so lucky to have sunny weather and we had an enjoyable week. We would definitely return.

So pleased you enjoyed it as much as we do!
Hope to hear from you again!
Very comfortable house with
everything we needed, including excellent showers, large dining kitchen, secluded garden and views across the fells from the spacious lounge. The village has a good dining Inn and no noise. Really. On the first morning we heard no human sound till 11am.
So, Thropton is an excellent base to tour Northumberland.
We walked to 'Cragside', had ice cream and a pint in Rothbury, played cricket on the beach at Bamburgh, crazy golf in Seahouses, saw Alnwick gardens, Hadrian's wall (Sycamore Gap), Craster (Dunstaburgh Castle) and saw dolphins and porpoise when we nipped down to Tynemouth.
Does it get any better?

An enjoyable week
We found everything we needed for three couples for a week. We were very comfortable, once we got the central heating adjusted right. The cottage is ideally situated in a quiet cul-de-sac, round the corner from a pub and in beautiful countryside.

What makes this property unique
BE WARNED! As this is truly our second home the property is much fuller of our personal possessions, gadgets & equipment etc than if a purely rental one. We hope you do also - and want to return!
