One toilet, not two as listed. Crucial misinformation. Three senior citizens with various health issues would NOT have chosen this property. We had no prior warning so had no opportunity to change or cancel ahead of arrival. The proprietor admitted she had been trying to get the advertiser to correct the details but had not advised us beforehand - we booked five months ahead. No Internet signal at property so unable at time to contact advertising company. The proprietor gave us a number to phone, said the advertising company admitted responsibility. Lovely area, spoilt holiday.

We were very comfortable at Olafs Cottage on the whole.
We were very comfortable at Olafs Cottage on the whole. It is a very peaceful and attractive location. We liked the 'traditional' style but felt the cooker is in serious need of replacement. We ate mainly at home because of covid so used the cooker every day. The bedrooms and beds were very comfortable and cosy and the whole place was very clean. The one bathroom plus separate shower on the ground floor was sufficient for our party of 3 adults but less so for groups of 6 perhaps.

Second time there.
Second time there. Great location, right next to a beautiful woodland and then beaches. Massive sandy beach (Rigg bay) only about a mile or two away - always fairly empty in May/June.
Lovely walks around Kilsture wood/forest.
Wildlife is abundant - we saw seals, deer, badgers, owls, bats, along with the usual rockpool critters.

This is a good value, basic cottage attached to a farm & is situated in a beautiful area . It has all the equipment you need for a comfortable but not luxurious holiday.
If you are expecting a cottage in a lively seaside town you will be disappointed but if you are happy being situated about 1.5 miles from the only pub (excellent) & the same from the only shop then you will be okay.
Garlieston bay is very attractive with a good beach & there are some very pleasant walks in the area.
We had a lovely holiday made even better by the great weather.

My wife, two kids, two dogs and I made our way back to Olaf’s Cottage, twelve years since our one and only previous visit.
Everything was more or less the same, quaint furniture in keeping with the lovely little cottage and everything feeling “as it should”.
If you’re going to struggle without WiFi or a big screen tv or an en suite then maybe Olaf’s isn’t for you but if that’s not a big deal to you then you should be absolutely fine.
Our holiday was blessed with seven solid days of August sunshine which allowed us to use the house as a base from which to play.
We used our remote camera trap in the small wood to the back of the cottage to capture video images of deer and a fox, we barbecued our evening meal on “our” beach at least three times, played cricket in the evenings on the beach of Garlieston Bay and had some fun in the surf round at Rigg Bay, a lovely sun drenched safe beach to explore and swim on.
We actually did venture out in the car one time and went up to the Galloway Forest park and saw some red deer and visited the lake by the visitor centre.
All told, not one of us had a complaint, the (geriatric) dogs enjoyed the space of the garden and access to role woods and beach, the kids enjoyed the freedom to run, play and climb and the grown ups just enjoyed the sunshine, beer and bbq’s.
There was a minor scare on arrival where we thought we’d been cancelled without our knowledge but fortunately Brenda was very helpful and reassuring.
The weather played a huge part in making our week amazing but even without it, the cottage, it’s surroundings and the feeling of remoteness meant we had a good, “old fashioned” holiday, like what I had when I was a kid and happily our twelve and ten year old daughter and son, completely bought in to the experience.

The cottage is located close to the lovely village of Garlieston.
The cottage is located close to the lovely village of Garlieston. The setting is stunning and if peace and quiet from the hassle of daily life is what you’re after, it is absolutely perfect. The decor is rather old fashioned and dated, but this rather adds to its charm. The bed was comfortable and the furnishings were basic but okay. The owners live not too far away and were friendly and welcoming. We would definitely go back again for the location alone. On the down side, this is the first time we’ve been to a cottage where nothing was provided, no tea or coffee, milk, nothing, the bathroom didn’t even have soap. It was perfectly warm whilst we were there, but I can imagine it might be a bit on the cold side in the dead of winter. Despite these small points we would definitely go back again as the setting and Garlieston itself are lovely.

This is our second visit, and once again had a great holiday in a wonderful location. Our 2 dogs had a brilliant time. Local amenities are sparse, but it does not detract from the overall experience. The local pub, the Harbour Inn is just down the road ( 3 minutes by car), and is very friendly with nice food. Galloway House gardens and the adjoining Rigg Bay with its lovely sandy beach are a short distance away and highly recommended. Lovely coastal walks from the doorstep.

Total peace and quiet, lovely surroundings, the owner was lovely and helpful, enjoyed our weeks stay, walking through the woods with Sophie our chocolate Lab, and you can walk to Garlieston, which has a beach, and then when you need a refreshing drink you can try The Harbour Inn, My husband enjoyed trying the Real Ale (The Harbour Inn), and the Fish and Chips, I had the Steak Pie, very nice.

We had a wonderful week in Olaf's cottage.
We had a wonderful week in Olaf's cottage. The owners were welcoming, friendly and helpful. They even provided wall to wall sunshine! The cottage is at the end of a farm road, well away from traffic. The garden opens out onto woodland which was perfect as we had brought our two dogs with us. On our visit the woods were carpeted with bluebells and wild garlic. There are ample sites of interest in this area and plenty of walking and cycling opportunities for the more energetic. Shopping in Garlieston is quite limited but Aldi and Sainsburys are available in Newton Stewart.

This was our third visit to Olaf's Cottage and it felt like coming home.
This was our third visit to Olaf's Cottage and it felt like coming home. If you like to get away from the madding crowds, take long walks through the woods to secluded beaches. Then come home to a roaring fire, then this is the place for you. Expect a warm welcome.
You do need a car to get out and about, the nearest shop, apart from the local garage (diesel only) is the Coop in Wigtown. For a larger store visit Sainsburys and Aldi in Newton Stewart.
