Settlement and farming at Newtown began in 1249 and you can still see the earthworks, banks and hollows of this thriving medieval settlement in the field above East Newtown, from the public right of way. Situated inside the Northumberland National Park, with a backdrop of the Simonside Hills and a pleasant descent to the lovely Coquet valley above the village of Rothbury, The Old Mill is an excellent base from which to explore the region. Step outside and access the footpath that leads to Newtown Park, the Forestry Commision walks, the crags and the 1410 foot high summit of Simonside. St Oswald’s Way passes close by at Lordenshaws. Rothbury enjoys many amenities including traditional pubs, coffee shops, bakers, butchers, galleries and leisure facilities. There are pleasant riverside walks and a playground for children. The glorious Northumberland countryside - still a well-kept secret, just waits to be explored and The Old Mill is a convenient and central base. The Old Mill is located within the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park, an area that has been awarded Gold Tier status, which is the highest rating for viewing stars. A great home in a lovely location, also a great base for exploring. The owners Alan and Sue are very knowledgeable and a lovely couple. I could stay permanent. The only downside was the suites were a bit low for a man over 6 foot tall.
