A couple of miles from White Lodge Cottage is a cobbled market square in the centre of nearby market town of Thirsk, where you can visit the interesting inns, many of which date back to the 18th century when Thirsk was an important posting station. There are also plenty of traditional shops, restaurants and tea rooms to choose from, and Thirsk even has its own racecourse if you fancy a flutter on the horses. Thirsk is the principal market town of the Hambleton Hills, forming the western part of the moors and is a haven for keen walkers and cyclists with numerous pathways and cycle tracks close by. It is an excellent centre for touring the whole of the Yorkshire Dales National Park as well as the North York Moors, and the coast is about an hour away. In the famous James Herriot vet stories created by the writer Alf Wight, Thirsk is the fictional town of ’Darrowby’, and The World of James Herriot Museum occupies the original surgery of Alf Wight.
The historic city of York is just 30 minutes away, and Harrogate 45 minutes away, both well worth a visit. The famous White Horse of Kilburn and Sutton Bank are 4 miles away, and from the latter you take the Cleveland Way towards Whitestone Cliff (for fantastic views of Lake Gormire), and across the Vale of Mowbray to the distant Pennines just visible in the distance. The mysterious Lake Gormire is tucked away in dense woodland below Sutton Bank, and is one of only two natural lakes in the county, created by meltwater at the end of the last Ice Age and accessible only on foot. There are several ancient abbeys and castles, and just a short drive away is Fountains Abbey. There is so much to do in the wonderful part of the world that you will definitely want to return. Shop 2½ miles, pub and restaurant 200 yards.
Free WiFi
Please note, there is a refundable security deposit of £500 payable prior to the arrival and returned on departure if the property is all in order.
No stag, hen or other party bookings allowed.
