About this property

Luxury Riverside Studio with Conservatory and Wharf in the centre of Oxford

Studio Calendula stands, Venice-like, right over the waters of the Thames. On the lower ground floor, with glass doors onto the river and onto the riverside conservatory, the studio is sunny and light. Ripples of water dance on the ceiling in the wake of boats gliding downstream.

It is the most spacious of the Folly Bridge apartments. It has its own front door and a small private conservatory for outside dining or reclining, fishing or catching crayfish. On winter days you can lounge inside on the love-seat in the sun, reading your book, gazing downstream. Our new wharf allows you to take Gerry's Ferry upstream to the Port Meadow and the ruins of Godstown nunnery or downstream to the Isis pub and Iffley.

Paul du Toit's large acrylic on canvas Seascape hangs above the bed and the small oil painting Vibrations (also by him) hangs in the entrance. In the kitchen area there is a charcoal drawing: Cape Town Street Scene. The studio has Italian stone floors warmed by underfloor heating and a finely woven gabbeh rug. There is superfast fibre optic broadband and a flatscreen TV/DVD.

Folly Bridge House bathrooms are small. Their size is dictated by trying to introduce 21st comfort into a heritage house. So, if a large bathroom is a critical element of your enjoyment, FBH is not for you. They are new, bright with a water softening shower and hairdryer.

The hideaway kitchen is cleverly designed to provide for modern living, almost invisibly: double induction hob, full-sized undercounter fridge with ice box and microwave and all the elegant necessities of city living, including a Nespresso pod Coffee Machine. (A combination convection oven/microwave/grill is available on request). The latest in ventilation systems removes cooking smells, steam and Oxford's notorious damp climate from the apartment, replacing them with fresh, warmed air drawn in from above the trees at a rate of 180 cubic metres per hour.

The house is one of Oxford's iconic buildings. It has 7 self-contained luxury studios (for more information on the whole house search for follybridgehouse). It has been beautifully restored by a potter and a photographer. They describe it as 'eco chic'. Guests can enjoy their collection of modern art and ceramics. A crenellated Victorian tower standing in the River Thames at the point of the original 900 AD oxen ford, it conjures all the romance of the city. This is the spot where Alice in Wonderland was invented by Lewis Carroll. On Folly Bridge, the 13th century philosopher and alchemist Roger Bacon had a tower. From the roof, the River Thames and the dreaming spires of the city spread out before you.

Oxford's most fashionable riverside restaurant, stands across the courtyard. The Folly offers a discount to our guests for dinner.

Perfect place for 1 or 2 to stay in Oxford
This property is a true gem. What an amazing experience - a waterfront unit in a city is not something one gets to experience often! We had an amazing time and greatly enjoyed our stay. Folly Bridge House is a charming, story-book building tucked away from the main road, so there is sense of privacy unusual in such a central location. Yet Folly Bridge House is within easy walking distance of the city center and the University’s main attractions. The caretaking staff are courteous.and helpful, and all our interactions were positive ones. This particular unit is fantastic. Although a basement unit, it is bright and airy. The conservatory is a fantastic place to sit rain or shine. I spent several hours reading while watching the Themes go by and listening to the rain patter on the glass. As the Themes is right outside the door, Ducks, geese, and even the occasional swan would come by looking for food. We picked up some folding chairs and would sit out on the dock, reading and enjoying being on the water. There are only two downsides I think worth mentioning. First, the outdoor steps leading down to the unit can need careful navigation in the dark, but their is an interior entrance as well. Second, as mentioned on the Folly Bridge House website, the bathroom is quite small. However, we found the small size much less of an issue than expected. The water pressure is great and the water is not hard (mineral heavy). We loved our stay and look forward to returning!

I am a writer and photographer and Folly Bridge House has some of my photographs as well as artworks and sculptures from our collection of 20th and 21st century art. I love my Folly Bridge House for its warmth, quietness and closeness to the best things in Oxford. These days I live just upstream from Oxford on an island in the Thames but I love coming into the city. My passion now, in this era of climate change and global inequity, is to see how far one can make something beautiful and luxurious and at the same time contribute to an environmental and fair trade ethos.

Why they chose this property

Folly Bridge House is in the extraordinary position of being in the historic centre of Oxford, close to the restaurants, the university and shops but you step through the little door in our large wooden gates and you feel in a haven of peace with the calming effect of the river flowing by, the garden and flowers and herbs, which guests are invited to pick. In a minute you are on the Thames National Path walking upstream to the ruins of the nunnery at Godstow or downstream to the Isis Pub and Iffley. You can take a boat to the ancient town of Abingdon or Gerry's Ferry to Port Meadow and the Perch and the Isis Pubs. If shopping, and cinemas and restaurants are more your thing - the new Westgate Centre is a 10 minute walk up the north bank of the river.

What makes this property unique

I had known Folly Bridge House for many years, and never imagined that one day one might be able to live in this historic building with view over one of the oldest parts of Oxford.

We have a helpful but discreet housekeeper who visits regularly and is on hand for questions and help and advice.

For longer stays ie that who come for the academic term or year, there is the option of not paying if you go away (so long as you have somewhere to store your things.
