About this property

THE HOMESTEAD AT SAMOAN HIGHLAND HIDEAWAY - PRIVATE 25-GUEST MOUNTAIN ESTATE

Leave the coastal humidity behind and gather your entire family at The Homestead at Samoan Highland Hideaway.

Perched in the crisp, refreshing air of the Aleisa highlands—just under 250 meters above sea level—this grand estate offers your group of up to 25 guests 100% EXCLUSIVE, PRIVATE RUN of the property. There are absolutely no shared spaces and no on-site neighbors.

Beyond serving as the ultimate private family headquarters, the Homestead operates as your own private basecamp for SAMOAN HIGHLAND HIDEAWAY ADVENTURES.

As our exclusive estate guests, your group receives front-of-the-line priority for custom 4x4 mountain excursions, guided cultural treks, and hidden waterfall tours departing directly from your front porch—managed completely by our dedicated estate team.

--------------------------------------------------
WHAT OUR GUESTS SAY: REAL HIGHLAND EXPERIENCES
--------------------------------------------------

- STEP INTO ANOTHER WORLD: Our highland microclimate sits 2.5°C (4.5°F) cooler than the coast. Both levels of the homestead are wrapped in massive, near floor-to-ceiling louvers, ceiling fans, and pedestal fans, allowing beautiful, continuous mountain breezes to flow freely through every single room without noisy artificial AC.

- THE ULTIMATE FAMILY HEADQUARTERS: Multi-generational groups, grandparents, and children love the freedom of our property. With a completely enclosed, insect-proof design, expansive private lawns, and a massive common layout, your family has room to move, play, and connect safely.

--------------------------------------------------
GROUP SUITABILITY & PROVEN OPERATION
--------------------------------------------------

The Homestead is engineered from the ground up to support large-scale group logistics. Whether you are organizing a massive family reunion, a humanitarian mission, an NGO project team, or an international study-abroad volunteer group, our estate provides the ideal functional layout.

- PROVEN TRACK RECORD: The estate is uniquely equipped to handle complex, multi-week group rotations. Coming up to 5 years now, we are under a major 10-week summer contract comfortably housing a rotating delegation of over 100 American humanitarian youth workers. Operating in five seamless, back-to-back blocks of 24 guests at a time, the split-level layout allows for flawless group dynamics and strict supervision (comfortably splitting 14 female guests on the upper level and 10 male guests on the lower level).

- COMMUNITY LIVING WITHOUT THE HOTEL COSTS: Unlike sterile hotels that force your group into separate, costly rooms, the Homestead allows everyone to live, cook, and bond under one roof while maintaining privacy between floors. It is the ultimate basecamp for mission-driven groups who value community, safety, and functional space over resort frills.

--------------------------------------------------
THE ESTATE LAYOUT & BEDDING BREAKDOWN
--------------------------------------------------

The split-level homestead is structurally configured to provide private bedrooms for couples and grandparents, while offering massive, flexible sleeping spaces for children and extended family:

- THE UPPER LEVEL (SLEEPS 15+ GUESTS):
This level is the main gathering hub, featuring our large modern kitchen, spacious dining hall, and massive central lounge.

* MASTER BEDROOM: Includes 1 Queen bed and 1 sturdy Bunk bed. Features a private full ensuite bathroom. Perfect for family heads or parents with young children.

* SECONDARY BEDROOM: Includes 1 Queen bed and 1 sturdy Bunk bed. Located directly adjacent to the second full upper bathroom and estate laundry.

* THE 60-FOOT ENCLOSED VERANDAH: An expansive sleeping space wrapped in cool breezes. It holds 1 standard Bunk bed (plus a secondary bunk bed tucked around the corner when needed) and 4 to 5 comfortable Single beds. Highly popular with kids and teenagers.

* THE CENTRAL LOUNGE ROOM: The main family meeting space, equipped with a comfortable, integrated lay-down bench bed for extra flexible sleeping.

- THE LOWER LEVEL (SLEEPS 10 TO 12 GUESTS):
A quieter zone offering a great mix of shared rooms and privacy, complete with its own full bathroom and a peaceful reading/office room.

* THE FAR BEDROOM: Features 1 comfortable Double bed and 1 sturdy Bunk bed.

* THE CONNECTING BEDROOM: Connects directly via interior doors to both the Far Bedroom and the lower hallway. Equipped with 1 good-sized Twin bed and 1 sturdy Bunk bed.

* THE END BEDROOM: Located at the opposite end of the lower level for added privacy. It is perfectly set up with 1 Double bed, 1 Single bed, and 1 sturdy Bunk bed.

--------------------------------------------------
DINING & CATERING FLEXIBILITY FOR GROUPS
--------------------------------------------------

Feeding a large group requires flexibility, and the Homestead handles both styles effortlessly:

- COMPLETE SELF-CATERING: For families who love to cook together between trips downtown, our upper-level kitchen is fully equipped with a large refrigerator, high-capacity cookware, and a spacious layout designed to support prepping meals for 25+ guests without crowding.

- CATERED DELIVERY READY: If your organization or mission group prefers hassle-free dining, our property has a proven operational track record with local catering services. Our current 10-week humanitarian group utilizes seamless morning and evening catered meal deliveries, using our expansive dining areas and the 60-foot verandah for comfortable group seating.

- DINING OUT: When you want to experience the local culinary scene, the estate sits just a short drive from downtown Apia's top restaurants, cafes, and waterfront dining options.

--------------------------------------------------
PREMIUM TECH & AMENITIES FOR LARGE GROUPS
--------------------------------------------------

We know that hosting a massive group requires heavy-duty utilities. The Homestead is fully updated with high-end systems to ensure zero disruptions during your stay:

- STARLINK HIGH-SPEED WI-FI: Stay fully connected with lightning-fast satellite internet across the entire estate. Perfect for remote working parents, uploading adventure photos, or streaming movies for the kids.

- SEMI-OFF-GRID SOLAR POWER: Backed by a seamless system to ensure reliable electricity and hot water throughout the home, regardless of coastal grid fluctuations.

- FRESH DRINKING WATER WATER STATION: We keep your group comfortably hydrated. A modern water cooler with a dedicated stand is always available and fully stocked with large, refreshing bottles of clean drinking water throughout your stay.

--------------------------------------------------
ESTATE MANAGEMENT & TOTAL PRIVACY
--------------------------------------------------
YOUR PRIVACY: Your group has 100% exclusive, private run of the Homestead and lawns. No spaces are shared.

ON-SITE SUPPORT: The owners (Tim and Maria) and a trusted husband-and-wife team live discreetly in separate quarters on the estate grounds. While your group enjoys absolute privacy, we are all available on-site at a moment's notice to assist with logistics, coordinate your private 4x4 adventure tours, and ensure total estate security.

Tim & Maria were the most welcoming hosts - they went above & beyond to make our stay comfortable & relaxing. They gave us so much tourist advice which helped us around both Upolu & Savaii. Would highly recommend Samoan Highland Hideaway.

Our families wonderful stay at Highland Hideaway

Wow, from arriving to leaving this beautiful place, has been a great experiences for my sister and myself families, group of 7 adults. House is so spacious and open with a great balcony looking out to a well maintained Samoan garden. Good size kitchen to cook in, which was excellent for in house cooking, which we enjoyed, with the shops close by to buy food. Maria and here family provided outstanding service and guidances that made our stay at this place such a wonderful experiences, that we will not forget, and we plan to come back to this place, it is a great platform to base from to explore this beautiful country . Maria and Tim thank you for your hospitality, highlight to our trip.

Hidden piece of heaven

We had the opportunity to stay at both of Tim’s properties while in Samoa. Both houses were above and beyond our expectations. The main house is roomy and could fit much more than our family of 5. The balcony is to die for. The property is beautifully manicured and couldn’t be any more stunning. Tim is an absolute pleasure to work with and made us feel right at home. The property will be our first choice if we are looking for a place to stay in Samoa again.

Beyond Expectations

We had a beautiful stay and Tim and Maria’s home. They were so welcoming and accommodating throughout our stay. The grounds were immaculately kept by gardener Ioane. Great big space for families. Clean and tidy and kept nice and cool with fans in every room. Well equipped kitchen, great washing machine and restful living areas. Hosts were wonderfully polite and easy to communicate with. Poor cellphone reception if you don’t plan on driving to town daily. Wifi available but not always reliable. Otherwise not a single issue with our stay. We would absolutely recommend this stay to other families!

Perfect match 'Home away from Home'

WOW! Better then the photos. On arrival, we were greeted by Lena & Tepora who were both very welcoming. All the amenities were up to standard and the up keep of the gardens were amazing! The location was perfect and suited our needs, very private and well away from the main road. BUT, as the owners have mentioned, make note that the shared drive-way is very rocky and you will be best to have a 4WD or similar .We all enjoyed our stay very much and would definitely recommend this property to small & large families. Thank you to the ladies Lena & Tepora for the great hospitality. We hope to see you again on our next trip. Regards Lydwina T (New Plymouth, NZ)

The premises were clean and perfectly appointed to meet our every need. The gardens are beautiful and maintained. It was the perfect hideaway. Because the house is in the Samoan highlands it escapes the heat of Apia. And it’s isolated location it was the perfect location to just relax and unwind. The Kitchen is fully equipped with backup contingencies in the unlikely event of a power blackout.Tim and Maria are wonderful and welcoming hosts and went out of their way to ensure we were comfortable. The balcony was the perfect location for a morning cup of tea or coffee or just listening to the birds. But it does get hot through the day. We loved our stay and when we plan our next trip to Samoa, the Samoan Highland Hideaway will be at the top of our list for accommodation

Loved the kindness of the people. John was great!

It’s hard to find a place big enough to House 10 adults. There were beds for only 9 so one had to sleep on the floor and the downstairs beds were small. It’s a very nice home and we adjusted well and had a great time. We loved sitting out on the large balcony in the cool of the evening a gazing at the glorious stars. We especially enjoyed the fresh fruit from the plantation tha John brought us.

Amazing Property- Perfect for Large Family

Our large family group just came home from staying at this amazing property in Samoa. It is just minutes from downtown Apia and is nestled in the hills just above making it about 10 degrees cooler than staying in town. It was clean, well appointed and Tim and Maria are the most enchanting hosts. We felt so pampered with daily visits to check up on us, deliver fresh produce from their garden and a wonderful woman who tidied up for us. It was magical! We watched the glorious sunrise and sunset on the balcony- where we also did daily Yoga ( they even had mats for us!). We will definitely return again and cannot recommend this place high enough!

Beautiful - a home away from home

My family had a great stay in this beautiful, well kept home - we like to thank our host Maria who made sure we were all comfortable & safe - always made sure any amenities that was needed eg extra fan, rice cooker, Maria would attend to straight away - she would drop whatever she is doing to do this. Maria was always helpful and a pleasure to chat to. It was good to have a dryer (main house) and Maria did not mind when you would use it (day or night) - loved the solar system invested in both properties and the house was very spacious ( we had 7 adults and 4 kids ). The road going to Hideaway would be the only issue but our kids enjoyed it bouncing side to side thinking it was a ride :) Thank you Tim & Maria - we have recommended this home to friends & family and hopefully when we return again would definitely stay here. Ps Our kids are missing the dogs Snowy & Excel

A small price for comfort.

Tucked away in Aleisa, we were greeted by the lovely Maria (owner). Clean Home which contains everything you need and more. A plantation of pineapples, pawpaw, avocado and bananas we had access too. Internet reception wasnt great but plenty of books to read. A safe place with friendly night security and grounds maintenance team.

Slow pace of life off the beaten path

Had a great time in Samoa at this property. Everything as advertised, safe secure property with comfortable amenities. More than expected spaciousness. Spent two weeks here seeing Upolu and enjoyed it. Tepora & Lena were helpful and friendly, as was everyone else we met in Samoa. Property was very beautiful true to photos, wonderful grass driveway. Kitchen was well equipped with gas stove, modern fridge, etc. Only a few over the air channels on the TV, but one showed a movie most every night. Corner store available right nearby within walking distance (limited) and large supermarkets available in about 20-30 minute drive. Only concerns was lack of fans (only two rooms had ceiling fans) but Lena was able to get us a portable fan, and of course, the ever present tropical bugs. The screens do a good job keeping out the flying ones. A clothes dryer is available at the fale, but the house has a line in the yard and lines under the carport to dry despite the rain. The road from the main sealed road to the driveway can be a bit rough after seasonal rains, so enquire as to conditions.

About the host

Hosted by TIm & Maria Walkden-Brown

Host profile image
Tim and Maria Walkden-Brown are now seeing their vision of providing a place for travelers to appreciate serenity and quietness in a beautiful and uncomplicated hideaway come true. Why, because that is what we ourselves seek…. how much more for us to be share it with like-minded soles….. the Samoan Highland Hideaway.

Our quest seeded in the early 1970’s when Tim arrived in Samoa from Australia on his way to Canada. He met his wife Maria and now 38 years later after sojourns in and between Samoa, Canada, Australia and New Zealand we are entering into our dream. No wonder the iconic writer Robert Louis Stevenson had a similar dream. Our family is settled in Australia and Canada and sometimes Bosnia but they all adore the purity of the beauty, culture and simplicity of Samoa. So can you.

Tim has spent a lifetime in heavy engineering in many remote locations from the Canadian Arctic to the windswept Sub-Antarctic. Maria’s time away from Samoa saw her putting her heart into what she loves; serving people. She had the ongoing privilege of working alongside people from Africa and Asia while meeting premiers and Canadian hockey stars. Above all she loves her garden so where better than Samoa. As you can see we are a multicultural family, love meeting like-minded folk from all countries.

We built our present house in this beautiful and quietly remote highland region of Aleisa on the cross island road to Paradise Beach in the early 2000’s. Since then the grounds have developed and much of our sustenance matured. We completed building a traditional Samoan fale adjacent to the main house in 2010. We can’t wait to share this with our guests.

Why they chose this property

Located in the Samoan highlands above the capital city Apia away from the tourist traffic and business of city life. We originally chose this remote and wild piece of land because it was distant for everyday Samoa. It has transformed to what you see today. We developed the land for our retirement home and then it took on the expansion into our present vacation property.
