About this property

'The Hide' in the beautiful Sunrise at 1770 estate.

The Hide is the perfect way to get close to nature. Its beautiful architecture opens the view into the old growth forest. It is a uniquely designed beach house that offers architectural luxury while feeling deeply connected to nature.
Set on an acre of pristine native forest within the Sunrise at 1770 Estate near Agnes Water, The Pods were designed as a place to live intimately and comfortably within the landscape.

This exceptional home has been widely recognised for its design, featuring on Dreambuild (ABC), in Vogue Living and Habitus Living, and on Channel 10’s The Living Room.

Sunrise at 1770 is an award-winning, ecologically sensitive, gated estate offering exceptional shared amenities for residents and guests. These include two beautifully sited horizon pools overlooking the ocean, four tennis courts, poolside barbecue kitchens and a children’s playground. The property runs entirely on rainwater, exports solar power back to the grid, and is supported by Starlink for reliable, high-quality internet access. Due to Sunrise’s regulations, pets cannot be accommodated. However, guests who enjoy wildlife will be delighted by the abundance of native animals throughout the estate.

The whole estate is like a natural coastal garden close to the ocean and the renowned Springs Beach near Agnes Water, the most northerly surf break on Australia’s east coast. Guests can access the 4 kilometres of beaches by walking down numerous beach access paths or just relax by the two horizon pools, including a shallow children’s pool, The walks along the headlands stretch from Red Rock beach to Springs Beach, where you can come up for a refreshing swim and walk back along the flat shaded ridge walk.

The Hide is arranged as a series of separate living, sleeping and bathing pavilions connected by a raised, covered timber walkway that enhances privacy and quiet, and forest views from every window. Moving between bedrooms, bathroom and kitchen involves walking along this walkway. The bushland setting and mild subtropical climate support abundant birdlife and wildlife, including black cockatoos, pretty-faced wallabies and grey kangaroos. Fill the large bird bath and just sit back and watch the animals and birds come in to drink. Rainwater tanks, solar hot water and electricity contribute to the home’s low-impact, passive design.

The house provides an ideal base from which to explore Sunrise’s private beach access and secluded coastline. Guests may drive along the estate’s internal roads to one of the beach clubs, where you’ll find a stunning suspended 25-metre pool, children’s pool, complimentary tennis and volleyball courts, modern amenities and luxury barbecue huts with solid dining settings and magnificent ocean views.

Life at The Pods centres around the main living pavilion with its expansive covered timber deck and circular marble dining table. Wide sliding doors allow seamless movement from the modern kitchen, equipped with a five-burner gas stove, fridge with ice maker, espresso coffee machine, water cooler and quiet dishwasher, to shaded outdoor dining on the deck. The kitchen space flows into the lounge room with generous built-in sofas, large screen TV for streamed movies, listening to music, playing board games or just enjoying an afternoon nap. The sofas can also accommodate additional guests if required.

The bathroom pavilion is finished in Italian travertine, with a full-height wall that opens to the forest beyond. Guests can soak in the deep bath while listening to birdsong or shower either inside or outdoors via the art glass door that opens in both directions. Water is sourced from rainwater tanks and at times may show a slight natural colour from leaf tannins. This is a normal characteristic of fresh rainwater.

The two bedroom pavilions each contain three single beds, with the option to convert two singles into a king-sized bed. Linen is provided for both configurations. Polished native timber floors and full-width, insect-screened sliding windows allow entire walls to open to the surrounding forest. All bed linen, bath towels, doonas and throws are provided. Guests need only bring beach or pool towels. We also suggest bringing a portable speaker for on the deck.

About the host

Hosted by Marian Drew

Host profile image
Owned by an acclaimed Australian artist, this home was created as a private retreat grounded in a deep love of nature, light and quiet moments. Hosting is about sharing that sense of calm; a place to slow down, reconnect, and experience living gently within the landscape.

Why they chose this property

Agnes Water and the Sunrise at 1770 Estate that the property sits within, offer a rare balance of coastal beauty and natural stillness. It’s a place where wildlife is part of everyday life, mornings begin with birdsong, and the pace is unhurried. We love the feeling of being immersed in nature while still close to the beach, luxury amenity, walking trails and the ocean.

What makes this property unique

Designed and crafted by Simon Laws to dissolve the boundary between indoors and outdoors, the house is deeply connected to and designed for its setting. Each element, from the solid cherrywood sliding doors, to the oversized parabolic roof over the outdoor dining area is bespoke and has been designed and hand fabricated by the designer.

Watch wallabies graze as you enjoy a drink in the sunken outdoor seating area, or soak in the bath with doors fully retracted, listening to birds in the surrounding trees. Every space is oriented to light, breeze and landscape a home that feels both architectural and completely at ease with nature.
