In the Far South of Tasmania, the forest parts to reveal a spectacular open button grass plain. Your modern 2 bedroom self-contained cabin is a comfortable eco-experience with solar electricity and hot water, wood heating and is free from distractions like TV and in-room phones.
Buttongrass Retreat is the perfect place to base yourself for exploring the natural beauty of Tasmania's Far South.
This special habitat is home to a unique range of flowers, birds and animals, a community found nowhere else. In the distance, the sometimes snow capped Southern Ranges loom.
Well appointed and comfortable, it features spacious rooms with each window bringing 'a new picture' and little touches including DVD and CD players with iPod dock, telescope, selection of native flowers, wood fired bakers oven and a reading nook beside the living area.
Yes, we do accept single night stays, but we encourage you to book multiple nights so that you have time to relax, explore and experience the nature of Far South Tasmania. When you stay multiple nights, we save on cleaning costs as we only clean after each departure. We pass this saving onto you by only applying the cleaning charge once per stay. The longer you stay, the the total cost divided by the number of nights becomes lower.
Stay a few nights and visit the natural wonders of Hastings Caves, Southwest National Park, Southport Lagoon, Cockle Creek, Adamsons Peak and Duckhole Lake. Maybe spend a rest day doing nothing much, enjoy the view of the southernmost mountains in Australia, the calls of Ground Parrots and other birdlife, the flowers of the buttongrass moorland. Come evening, the dark sky, free from city light pollution, gives opportunity to see the night sky in all its glory. Maybe you will be lucky and see a Southern Aurora peaking over the Southern Ranges.
Eco-features include: Protected natural buttongrass moorland, native wildlife roaming free, solar and wind electricity (enough for small devices but not sufficient for rice cookers, hair dryers, electric blankets etc) carbon neutral wood fires heating, water neutral onsite water collection, treatment and disposal, composting toilet, fully insulated and double glazing.

Glad that you enjoyed your stay at Buttongrass Retreat, especially the views. The mountains that you saw are in the World Heritage Wilderness Area and include the southernmost mountains in Australia. We look forward to seeing you again sometime :)
This cottage was perfect, we all enjoyed our short stay here. The cottage had the advantage of being wheelchair accessible.

Great location and stunning view
This property was perfectly isolated and away from it all. Great access after our visit to the local caves. We have never stayed in an 'eco' house and found some of the features difficult to get used to, but we indeed felt very kind to the environment! Stunning views.

Hi Angela,
Glad that you quickly adapted to the eco-facilities and remember us as a "...kind to the environment...." experience.
Thanks for your visit.

We picked the property because of its location, we both love buttongrass so it was nice to see someone with an expansive property left to its own devices and not ruining the landscape.
Instructions were very clear and even thoigh we both live rurally and have woodheaters, the fact that the fire was set when we got there was a lovely surprise. Having been accommodation for over 10 yeara things are obviously a little worn but that didnt hamper our short stay at all. Would definitely return!

G'Day Nikki,
Thanks for visiting Buttongrass Retreat. Your comments will help other people who appreciate nature to choose this cabin in a natural landscape for their break. Yes, during construction, we took great pains to preserve the native mooreland, with its views to the southwest wilderness.
Great hut in the middle of nowhere. Actually pretty close, ~400m to road and other houses, but you really feel like you have checked out from society. Information on the property talks about limited electricity, but that does not include the fridge which works all the time. There is also a glass BBQ and outdoor table. There is also an outdoor bath tub. Great base for exploring the south east. Only 10mins from Hasting Caves. Highly recommend.
Off the grid pleasure coupled with million dollar views. Thanks for providing such a beautiful, comfortable retreat.

Hi Kellie,
Glad that you enjoyed the "...million dollar views..." at Buttongrass Retreat. Those mountains are the southernmost in Australia and are often snow capped in winter. Glad that you enjoyed being off grid also.
We look forward to seeing you again at Buttongrass Retreat sometime soon
