Fun Place

Owner is super communicative, but some of the amenities (matches, hot water occasionally) were missing so you may have to improvise. Overall, worth it! Bring a camera to take photos of the stars. It looks great out there.

Comfortable property with an incredible view

The house was very comfortable, well stocked and clean. The property is amazing and the kids and dogs could not get enough of the hills and the cows. We particularly enjoyed the fire pit and incredible views of the stars.

Peaceful times

This isn’t our first time at this cabin! We come back frequently because of its peaceful area. The serenity of the Cabin makes you feel right at home and relax immediately. We’ve rented this cabin several times over many years and we always return . We’ve been through many seasons at this cabin in each time has been just as enjoyable as the last. I highly recommend this Cabin for your stay and the owner is always willing to help and check in is easy

Very pleasant stay

We found it to be ideal for a young family. The cabin itself is very nice and homely. There is a lot of wildlife in the area. There are lots of deer and birds. I have only seen the stars so clearly from a boat in the middle of the ocean. The area also has a lot of fun things to see in explore.

Star gazing at it's finest

We had a wonderful stay here! Great time away from the city where the only neighbors were cows. Firepit was a perfect place to hang out and the fenced yard was great for our dog. Plenty of space for her to run. Beautiful mountain views and rolling hills.

Wonderfully secluded.

I really enjoyed the property. We were there four days and spent a lot of time on the porch, chilling and enjoying the scenery. The house was well equipped with plenty of kitchen, utensils, plates, cups, and glasses. If you are looking for a resort experience, it might not be for you, but we always look for a good place to chill for a few days at the end of our trip and it was perfect for that

The most beautiful views

We had a wonderful time in the mountains. The cabin was very comfortable and cozy. But the property was fabulous. We enjoyed the surround area and checking out the local towns. People are very friendly. We will be back. What is not to like? Perfect getaway.

Wonderful secluded getaway

This place is truly about as close to heaven as you can get. Wonderful scenery, abundance of wildlife and secluded isolation that helps you unwind from reality. As a topper this year we were able to see the aurora with no light pollution which was incredible. Highly recommend staying here, the place is cozy, the owner is awesome and is very communicative. So if you’re looking for a secluded getaway this is the one!

Peaceful and beautiful

We loved our mini vacation here. It was quiet and beautiful. We spent most of our time on the back porch reading and relaxing, watching the birds while the cows watched us and our dog. Beds were comfortable. The fire pit was great too. We hope to come back next spring.

Piece and Quiet

This is a great place to get away from it all. Scenic, rustic, and rural. We spent our daytime hiking the vast property and our evenings by the stone hearth with a warm fire.

Wonderful!

A snowy, wet weekend nestled away with family and the maple festival. This cabin was perfect! Big fireplace, lots of wood, kitchen stocked with seasonings and condiments and all the kitchen utensils you could want! Steve was a great host, providing us with step by step directions to this secluded paradise. We will definitely come back!

Best Place to Stay Near Doe Hill/Monterey/McDowell

We took a family vacation to show my ailing father a historic home near Doe Hill built by our ancestors. This cabin has everything you need for a comfortable stay! The pictures in the listing isn't even close to how beautiful the property is and the amazing views it has. The cabin is clean and well stocked with everything you need. We will definitely be back to bring more family out to this beautiful area. Sitting on the front porch looking at God's creation was the best!!!

Fantastic Getaway

I'm a teacher and an oil painter, and I've been coming to Seldom Seen each June to decompress and do some painting. There is no better place for either activity. The silence and the pristine beauty of the Hollow is indescribable. My words or paintings can't do it justice. Go see for yourself!

Perfection

Steve’s property is the best thing I could’ve imagined for my stay. He was very communicative and responsive and even left firewood for my use. The house is amazing and comes with all the furnishings to make your stay great. The kitchen was extremely well stocked. The view from the front porch was gorgeous. I can’t think of anything else that could’ve been better during my stay.

Peaceful setting

There is not another human in sight and in the evenings total darkness. The track into the property is quite rough but we were able to navigate it with our minivan. The fireplace in the house is wonderful and there was plenty of wood provided.

Heaven on Earth ❤️

Omigosh!!!! This place is AMAZING!!! I’m now obsessed with COWS!!! We spent HOURS just sitting on the front porch enjoying the peaceful scenery and all the wildlife, especially the cows! If you’re looking for peace and quiet, this is the place to be! My husband and I will definitely be going back! And Steve is awesome to work with! If we had questions, he was very quick with his responses! I just can’t say enough about this place!! ❤️

Astronomy Delight

The house was comfortable, clean with all the amenities. Dish network and wifi worked well. There is no cellular service though which I was happy with and was expected. The area is mountainous, with beautiful views and remote. You can hear yourself think, no noise, no traffic, no neighbors. Saw a grouse, a black bear and many deer. The night sky was the reason for the visit and we were not disappointed. The Milky Way could be seen from horizon to horizon. For those astronomically minded think Bortle 2 with a SQM of 21.8ish. So, bring your telescope. We will be back.

A very special mountain retreat

We absolutely love this gorgeous mountain setting....from the beautiful mountain road switchbacks to the lovely expansive views from the cabin. The cabin is very comfortable and has everything a family might need for accommodations. We enjoyed just sitting on the porch, taking in nature, including the various calls and sounds of the cows in the surrounding pastures. There were two little fledgling swallows in a nest above the porch, so we were able to watch the parents' activity to feed them. They seemed almost ready to fly, and sure enough, by the morning we left they were no longer there! We also enjoyed the hummingbirds at the various feeders on the porch. We especially loved the trail that we followed from the cabin up into the woods. Good exercise!!! Our 3 dogs were very much enamored with the cows that would pass through during the day. We have been to many VRBO cabins, but have never found one that met our desire for a remote location as well as this one did. Steve is a very responsive owner. We were so appreciative of his desire to provide help and guidance regarding any questions we had about our trip. We look forward to coming back, and would really love to see this place in the fall. Should be so spectacular!!!

Mountain Paradise

My Husband and I and our 4 sons spent 5 nights at "Off the Grid" and loved it. The boys are already wanting to return in the winter. This piece of property is just beautiful. It is truly "Off the Grid." The view from every window is spectacular, and sitting on the front porch is magical. All you see and hear is God's creation. No houses, no roads, no noise from humans. You only hear the water nearby and all the song birds. It is very peaceful! We saw so many birds and deer. We were just immersed in nature. The house is very comfortable! I didn't want to leave! A few things to consider if you are thinking of renting this property: the driveway is a long grass and dirt track, which when wet was tough for our van to get up; our tires did a lot of spinning, and the van was quite muddy when we left. It is old so, we didn't care, but don't bring your luxury car. Also, McDowell is a very small town. The nearest town of any size is an hour away, and you have to drive a mountainous road to get there, but it is a really nice town. We came up to see Shenandoah National Park, and some of the sites in the area, so we did a lot of driving. For us, it was worth it. We loved staying on this beautiful piece of property!
