About this property
Waterfront Family Shack ‘Alkira’
About the Space:
Alkira is an original beach shack which overlooks the D’Entrecasteaux Channel on Southern Bruny Island. Many families have spent time holidaying here over the years, and you will be filled with that family shack nostalgia as soon as you step through the front door. It is a small, simple dwelling filled with natural light and all that you’ll need for your stay. Alkira has recently been renovated with a new shower, wood heater and lick of paint, but is still a “shack” at heart.
It is an idyllic haven for couples, families, friends or solo travellers. It offers two bedrooms and a bunk room, a bright coastal bathroom with rain shower, a cosy sun-drenched lounge room, and a fully equipped kitchen and large deck out the front with a barbecue. With incredible views to wake up to and enjoy on the front deck, Alkira promises to create some cherished memories.
The beach is located just out the front of the property, with steps leading down off the main road. It’s perfect for small children at low tide to hunt for crabs, and to wade through ankle deep water if you don’t want to change into your cossie. It’s not unheard of to have this little cove all to yourself.
The space
Bedrooms:
Get a good night’s sleep in one of our two queen bedrooms, each adorned with quality bed linen. There is also a bunk bed in the room of the second bedroom. Extra blankets and electric heaters are provided for those chilly nights on the island. There is a cot provided for the little ones.
Bathroom:
There is a walk-in rain shower with shampoo, conditioner and body wash provided. Also feel free to use the washing machine for longer stays.
Living Space:
Unwind in the cozy living space, complete with a leather 3-seater couch, 2 armchairs, and an inviting indoor fireplace. Plenty of entertainment options for all ages including a smart TV, a collection of novels, games, and puzzles, as well as many editions of the local Island magazine.
Kitchen:
Enjoy cooking (or preparing a delicious cheese platter!) in our fully equipped kitchen with all the essentials including a stove, oven, Nespresso coffee machine, French press coffee maker, express coffee pot, kettle, toaster, microwave and fridge. Basic condiments (oil, salt and pepper) and cooking utensils are provided, ensuring a hassle-free culinary experience during your stay.
Outdoor Amenities:
Step outside and enjoy the amazing views of the D’Entrecasteaux Channel on our large deck, where you will often experience picturesque sunsets over the water as you enjoy your glass of wine. If you are fortunate, you might also spot an Aurora. We also get furry visitors such a wallabies on the lawns surrounding the shack (but please don’t feed them 😊). The deck is also kitted out with a barbecue and market umbrella, which makes it the perfect place to relax and enjoy the local food offerings such as fresh oysters and cheese.
Pet friendly features:
Travelling with pets? Alkira family shack is the perfect option with the large deck that can be closed off. We are in the process of making the yard secure so please ask about this to see if it’s finished in time for your stay!
Guest access
Guests have access to the entire shack and surrounding clearing. There is room for two cars to park comfortably off the road.
Other things to note
Alkira is located a short walk to the Bruny Island Winery, 10-minute drive to Hotel Bruny and 40 minutes from the ferry terminal.
The nearest grocery story is in Adventure Bay which is 30 minutes away so when you are travelling to the ferry it is a great idea to stop in Kingston to pick up some groceries before arriving. Whilst we have water tanks, it is also recommended to bring drinking water with you.

About the host
Hosted by Courtney Dunbabin
Hi there! My name is Courtney and I live on the little island of Tasmania :) I have been an Airbnb host for over ten years and absolutely love it. I work as a speech and language pathologist and specialise in language and literacy disorders. However, Airbnb has become my second job which I really enjoy and have expanded with a lovely holiday house on Bruny Island. When I'm not down at Bruny or exploring new places around Tasmania, I will scope out gigs and music festivals to go to - and often spend ridiculous amounts of money getting there! I also used to live in London and love travelling - which is how I was first introduced to Airbnb. I really enjoy meeting new people and showing them the best parts of our little island. I look forward to hearing from you and having you stay at my homely shack in Bruny Island!
