STARFISH ON STRADDIE

"Starfish" is a comfortable 1 bedroom plus bunk room cottage, close to natural bushland and only 1 kilometre from the beach (Please scroll down to bottom of first page to see exact location on local map)

Starfish has everything you need for a stress free beach holiday.

Winter brings the majestic Humpback Whales on their annual migration to Hervey Bay. A short drive to lookouts and from May to August, you will see them heading north. From August to November they return to their summer home in the Antarctic waters. Other whales can also frequent the crystal clear waters off North Stradbroke Island.

Picture yourself barefoot on a pristine beach, not a care in the world. Sun glistening through crystal clear blue water, dolphins surfing the waves. Seagulls, terns and oyster catches go about their day on the beach too. You may spot a kite or eagle gliding above the dunes.
This is a small taste of what is awaiting you. To experience all North Stradbroke Island has to offer, a pleasant trip across Moreton Bay is necessary. Regular vehicular ferries and passenger boats depart from Cleveland, a bay side area, south east of Brisbane. Ferry and passenger boat trips depart daily from 5am, until late, depending on day of week. More about that later, but it must be said that this relaxing trip will de-stress and unwind you in preparation for your stay in paradise.
A 15 minute drive from Dunwich, were the ferry and boat terminals are, is Starfish.

Starfish on straddie

Great location can even see a glimpse of the ocean from the front deck. Bit going on in the front yard with old machines and some gardening work but was pre warned and really wasn't that big of a deal. Would definitely come again.

Great place to stay.

My wife and I and our two dogs had a wonderful stay at Starfish. Everything was as advertised and Carolyn and Malcolm were on hand to answer all our questions. Thank you for a great stay we had a wonderful break.

Perfect place to stay

Great base to enjoy the best of Straddie

This property was perfect for our family of 3. It had everything we needed, the beds were comfortable and it is in a peaceful and convenient location with the added bonus of being able to buy fresh seafood right next door. We are regular visitors to Straddie, it was the first time we have stayed in this area and we would absolutely stay again. Thankyou!

Great couple accommodation

We have stayed here twice and we’re going back for a third time. It’s not beach front but it’s just down the hill. Everything we needed was there and our Labrador enjoyed his stay. No complaints and Mal and Carolyn are very welcomingz

Straddie stay

This is the second time we have stayed here so we were already familiar with th property. Everything we needed was supplied.The bedrooms are a bit tight to move in but otherwise ok.maybe a wall fan in the bunk room? Gets a bit hot when door closed.The addition of the new outside deck giving a water view was great.

So easy

Clean, bright and spacious for the 3 of us. Beds were comfy and there were loads of games and DVDs for the hours not spent at the beach. It had everything we needed for storage. Really well-stocked utensils cupboards and drawers. perfect!

Slice of paradise

My family and I stayed for 3 nights and it was great. We didn't take a car so we walked to cylinder etc and Starfish was v close so much so my 6yo walk to/back to the beach. The kitchen is well set up, really appreciated having filtered cold water ready for our arrival. Having a washing machine with laundry powder was a god send too. Great selection of DVDs too. I am already looking for dates to comes back to stay.

Simple & clean

Lovely location but bring everything you need-including pepper gladwrap/foil (large container of salt found)! Outdoor area rather bleak. Books on Minjerribah and local history would also be a welcome addition to the stay. Next door fish outlet fabulous!

Our home away from home

Overall a great place to stay. Beds were really comfortable. Kitchen supplied with lots of utensils to cook, almost like being home. Dishwasher was a plus. Do bring your own coffee, tea, sugar, shampoo, conditioner and soap though.becauce they were not supplied..BBQ on the little deck was a really handy adition. No internet but like most of Straddie. Hard to find a good connection spot. Download maps, food places and places of interest before you come. Penty of dvds and family games in the house so that was very good. Really nicely set up little house. We will definitely be back when at Straddie again.

Whale Watching

We had a nice stay at Starfish. It was a peaceful location and the bed was comfortable. Lack of Wi-fi was a little inconvenient but my fault for not checking availability of this first. I wouldn’t recommend this accommodation for family with toddlers as they would probably fall off the patio but there’s heaps of games and DVD’s to help keep older kids entertained when not at the beach etc

Nice enough

Adequate. Poor telephone and mobile coverage. Had a disused tractor in pieces in the front yard. But it did make the place easy to find. My dog was allowed with a dog cage out the back, so that was a big plus.

Been a Straddie local resident since 1984, after marrying Mal who grew up here. We've raised 5 children who all went to the local school, played in the local footy team (except our daughter!), spent days out fishing with Mal, many hours at the beach or lakes and brought up on fresh fish, sunshine and fresh air, mostly all while being bare foot (shoes weren't a compulsory part of the uniform at the local school until recently - true story!)

Why they chose this property

We bought this property early 1984, being young and free, and after paying a mortgage on a house in a place we didn't want to be living (as it wasn't near the water) we made a choice of one of these 2 - buy a block of land at Straddie, or travel around Australia. We bit the bullet and bought our little piece of paradise, worked our butts off, started a family 3 years later, and we kept working our butts off, in the fishing industry, and tourism industry.
We built our small cabin (now called 'Starfish' - which is a reference to our name - Starkey - and that we are the fishing industry) and lived in it for about 5 years while we saved and built our current home, which is on the same block of land.
Now we offer our cabin for holiday rental for those wishing to enjoy the simple things in life, away from the busy main part of Point Lookout, but close enough to be there in 5 minutes

What makes this property unique

We have made the space in Starfish simple and basic - It has no airs and graces, but everything you need for comfort and practicality. The mattresses are good quality, and the reverse cycle air conditioner works very well for instance.
Behind Starfish is natural bushland, so wildlife is often seen on the footpaths or crossing the road (kangaroos, echidnas, and even koalas when they are on the move)
