Ideal location to explore historic Strathalbyn, Wineries, good food and scenery
Set in over an acre of gardens on the banks of the river Angas sit our heritage listed C1860 bluestone restored cottages.
The Gasworks once provided the gas for the town of Strathalbyn until it ceased production in 1917 and is now beautifully converted to accommodation for its owners and guests in our lovingly restored private fully self contained cottages.
The Stables Cottage as its name suggests was once the home to the horses that lived on site but is now a cosy romantic cottage for two with it's own lounge/kitchette and separate bedroom with queen bed and ensuite spa bathroom. (please note the shower is postponed over the bath and is therefore unsuitable for people with mobility issues, best option is the Garden Suite but if you are okay with the steps in the flooring, the Manager Cottage has a spa with separate shower).
Situated at the end of the gravel drive, privacy is guaranteed and you enjoy beautiful views of the gardens. Take a stroll around the beautiful gardens, maybe enjoy a picnic on the lawns.
This Cottage not suitable for pets, please book our pet friendly option The Managers Cottage.
Choose to cook breakfast in your own kitchen with the ample provisions provided for your first two days, or you can opt to have your breakfast cooked for you and delivered to you at a time of your choosing, contact us for prices and more information.
We offer a romance package, which consists of a bottle of locally produced wine (red, white or bubbles) and chocolates. Contact us after booking to arrange the romance package, delivered cooked breakfasts or to discuss any other special requests.
We have a large range of DVDs to loan free of charge as well as books and magazines. We also supply a portable blue tooth speaker so you can play your own music stored on your phone. A laundrette is conveniently located approx 200 metres away across the road from the property. NBN internet for free is available in all our cottages.
Parking whilst staying is in our diagonal car spaces just outside the property. You are welcome to drive down to unpack and then again when you are packing.
We are situated in the beautiful historic town of Strathalbyn, the southern end of High Street, just a short stroll from the town centre with its Antique shops, Heritage railway, Motor Museum and many dining options. Local wineries and a golf course are within a 10/15 minute drive. Beautiful beaches at Goolwa, Port Elliot and Victor Harbour are an easy short drive away 30/40 mins.

Thank you so much for the review. Your stay, punctuated as it was with terrible winds and rain, and a power cut, probably wasn't as relaxing as you hoped. I hope to see you back again soon, so we can try again ! It was a pleasure having you stay.
The hosts Graham and Heather were absolutely the most welcoming! They were lovely and respectful to my partner and I as well as giving us space to truly relax together comfortably. The stables cottage is gorgeous, all the amenities were amazing, the place was super clean and cozy and overall it was the most wonderful romantic getaway. The breakfast materials provided were also amazing!! My partner is lactose intolerant and they were super happy to provide us with oat milk instead of normal. We didn't do too much exploring of the area, the gardens at the cottages are beautiful though and the Pond seating area at the Victoria Hotel was lovely. We will absolutely be staying here again at some stage, really do recommend it for any couples looking for some romantic and relaxing time away :))

Thank you for such a lovely review and we look forward to seeing you back one day soon we hope
An amazing place. Everything at Gasworks was of the highest standard and quality. The property and gardens are stunning, with so much room to walk, relax , watch the chickens or the wildlife around the running creek. So relaxing. Provisions for breakfast were generous and appreciated. The history of a bygone era has been maintained. Hosts Heather and Grant are so welcoming and friendly and happy to leave u to yourself or have a chat if u wish. Will definitely be going back, excellent value for the standard of this property.
Heather and Graham are wonderful hosts who welcome you like old friends. The Stables Cottage in which we stayed was perfect for a couple. Lovely Old World charm with modern conveniences. The breakfast provisions were very generous. Tim Tams and port for the evening was a lovely extra. The gardens are beautiful and provide a quiet sanctuary. Highly recommend this lovely retreat.

Thank you Aurora it was a pleasure meeting you and so glad you enjoyed your stay, hope you return again one day
Great communication from Heather leading to the stay.
The location was quiet and peaceful. The Gardens are beautiful and lively to walk around.
Loved the spa.
There was breakfast provisions on arrival and a nice tasting port.
We did get into the township for coffee and a cheeky takeaway, however stayed mostly within the accommodation which was incredibly comfortable.
It was lovely to meet Heather who was very polite and welcoming. Thank you for having us.
The cottage was an historical, unique and cosy place to stay in our 3 nights in Strathalbyn. Well appointed, with plenty of local tips from the host re dining out and other activities. Perfect location( so close to town) and of course a short drive to the wine region of Langhorne Creek as well as the coastal areas. Loved the high quality breakfast provisions and the complementary Port. Perfect stay- loved it.
Centrally located, historical accommodation in manicured gardens
Greeted on arrival by Heather who was very welcoming, and also by jake the resident dog. Accommodation was pleasant, although the neighboring property sits so close to the cottage (stables cottage) that we could hear everything going on next door, even just them talking. Unfortunately for us there were gatherings going on both nights next door so it was quite noisy into the night and first thing in the morning.
Breakfast was provided however our milk was off, and I’m sure it would have been no drama to ask for more, but we decided to head out for breakfast instead. Personally I would have preferred our milk and especially meat products (bacon was supplied in snap lock bag) to be provided in original containers/packets to be able to determine best before dates.
A suggestion for the cottage would be to have a full length mirror, perhaps behind the bedroom door.
A beautiful cottage with amazing garden surrounds, it’s was a shame that the noise of the trucks on main road above and the noise from the neighbors reminded you that you weren’t alone. Another suggestion would be to have all of the chemicals and poisons out of sight next to the garage (where we parked our car) as for anyone that may have young children, this could potentially pose a risk.

We welcome feedback from all our guests as it helps us improve but unfortunately some situations such as a neighbours birthday party are unavoidable but saying that our neighbours are approachable and would have been happy to take the celebrations indoors if asked. I have moved the garden products back into the garage, they are normally put away but no children were staying and I was using them over that weekend. The fridge has been checked and temp adjusted as the milk was in date and ours was fine. We are happy for our guests to approach us with any issues, as after you leave nothing can be done.

Heather and Graham are warm and generous hosts who made our stay in their Manager’s Cottage a delight. We were able to day-trip to Victor Harbour and the fabulous vineyards, taking in all of the unforgetable scenery along the way. Each evening we returned to their magnificent garden, the cool and comfort of the cottage and the extra thoughtful homely comforts missing in many other stays. We highly recommend The Gasworks Cottages.
Words don’t do justice to this wonderful property and the amazing hosts. From the moment you arrive in the driveway the view takes your breath away. Heather and Graham are the perfect hosts and make the stay extra special. My partner and I are so glad we chose Gasworks Cottages to spend a memorable weekend away.

Thank you so much guys, this really means a lot to us. We love the property and town, and enjoy sharing it with two lovely people like yourselves. Glad you like Penny, Agnes and Gingers Eggs !
What a lovely find, the cottages are beautifully decorated and immaculately clean. The gardens are luscious and well tended. The stream running through the gardens is a bonus. Our hosts Heather and Graham were a pleasure to deal with, making sure we were very comfortable and had everything we needed- we even enjoyed fresh eggs! We’re definitely planning on returning as soon and as often as possible. Thank you

About the host
Hosted by Heather Dean
We both had corporate jobs in Melbourne and decided do have a tree change, gave up our jobs in Interior design and my husband managing in IT. Our children were grown and moved out and it was time to find something we enjoyed and gave us a more simple lifestyle; We enjoy gardening and lavish attention on our just over an acre of landscaped gardens winning best business gardens award seven years in a row and 2019 we also won The overall Grand Champion Garden Award. We also enjoy good wine and food and boy did we pick the right town. Strathalbyn has welcomed us with open arms and we enjoy the community and friendship we have found, needless to stay we are happy with our choices and hope during your short time with us you will experience the beauty and friendliness that embodies this town.
Why they chose this property
We spent a long time looking for that special place to run our accommodation. It had to be close to a town, walking distance to places to eat, coffee shops and hopefully a nice pub. We wanted something that had an historic background or something special about it and finally it had to be in a place people would want to visit. The Gasworks ticked all our boxes and it was love at first site. We intend to leave it better than we found it as we consider ourselves more caretakers than owners as this piece of history belongs to the town as well as us.
What makes this property unique
Built in C1890 The Gasworks was created out of the local Bluestone and along with its lovingly restored cottages the walkways/walls around the garden are also of this beautiful stone, we love the curve of the roof and its high ceilings. Location on the banks of the pretty River Angas is also a beautiful bonus. The gardens abound with birds and beautiful blooms, we find it the perfect haven and hope you do too. Short walk to the town, pubs, shops and eateries.
