Bush Gardens Trip

We started off our short little trip with a horrid hotel and ended it at this super cute and very accommodating camp ground. We had originally booked just a one night stay at the campground for a 2 day stay & play at bush gardens but then the family decided we shouldn’t drive up then go to the theme park but that we should come the night before. Well we booked a hotel room because the campground didn’t have an earlier night. The hotel was the worst hotel we’ve ever stayed at, like disgusting so much so that we asked the campground if we could shower there before bush gardens we understood that our cabin wasn’t ready which was fine because the bath house was perfect. We all were able to get ready the kiddos played at the playground it was just a breathe of fresh air after that hotel. We did a late check in after being at the amusement park all day and settled in to bed. It’s a cabin so keep in mind the bed frames are wood and have about an inch or two thick mattress which I would say was the only draw back but otherwise it had a tv ac refrigerator and separation of the two rooms. We really didn’t have time to take advantage of all the fun things the campground offered but we would 100 stay there again and definitely recommend it to friends

Didn't know it was an RV park next to the railroad tracks with no bathroom. That says it all.

Great get away

Very clean, sites were a bit on the small side but I didn’t feel like we were on top of neighbors. Very nice and inviting team. Extremely clean facilities. Would definitely go back if opportunity arises.

About the host

Hosted by Anvil Campground

Host profile image
We’re a proud family from Williamsburg, Virginia, and we’ve been welcoming guests to our property since 1954. What started as a small, hand-built campground created by our grandfather Ralph and our father Jerry has grown into a place that’s now served hundreds of thousands of happy travelers — and still remains completely family-owned and operated.

Today, we’re the third generation to run Anvil Campground, and we’re fortunate to have the fourth generation working alongside us. Hosting is more than a job — it’s a legacy. We grew up here, working summers, learning the ropes, and helping our guests find joy in the simple things: campfires, good conversations, and creating memories that last a lifetime.

We love what we do because it connects us with people from all walks of life. We’re passionate about hospitality, and it shows — Anvil Campground has been named Virginia Campground of the Year (2024), National RV Park of the Year (2022 and 2018), and Small Business of the Year in Williamsburg (2019). Our guests become like family, and we’re committed to providing a clean, safe, and relaxing environment filled with personal touches and friendly service.

Whether it’s your first time staying with us or your fiftieth, we want you to feel right at home. Hosting is in our DNA — and we’re honored to continue a tradition that’s lasted over 70 years.

Why they chose this property

Our family chose this neighborhood because it’s where our Virginia story began. In the late 1920s, our great-grandfather and grandfather were hired by John D. Rockefeller Jr. to serve as the master blacksmiths for the original restoration of Colonial Williamsburg. They moved here from Flint, Michigan, to help bring history back to life — quite literally forging the tools and hardware that still decorate the historic area today.

After the restoration was complete, they decided to stay and plant roots in Williamsburg. They fell in love with this area’s charm, history, and the sense of community. In 1954, our family built Anvil Campground by hand, right in the heart of old Williamsburg — not far from where they once swung hammers in the blacksmith shop. We’ve been welcoming guests here ever since.

We love this neighborhood because it blends the best of both worlds: it’s peaceful and relaxed, but just minutes from iconic attractions like Colonial Williamsburg, Busch Gardens, Water Country USA, and Jamestown. There’s so much to explore — yet our guests often say they’re just as happy relaxing at the campground. It’s a place with history, heart, and a true hometown feel. And for our family, there’s simply no place we’d rather be.

What makes this property unique

What makes our property unique is that it blends deep family history with modern, top-tier hospitality — something truly rare in today’s world of generic vacation rentals. Anvil Campground has been family-owned and operated for four generations, built by hand in 1954 by our grandfather and great-grandfather — both master blacksmiths hired by John D. Rockefeller Jr. to help restore Colonial Williamsburg. Our roots in this area run deep, and we’ve spent over 70 years creating a space where guests can feel that history, warmth, and care the moment they arrive.

We’re proud to have been recognized as the 2024 Virginia Campground of the Year, National RV Park of the Year in both 2018 and 2022, and Small Business of the Year in Williamsburg in 2019. We’ve also earned TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence for multiple years, placing us among the top 10% of hospitality businesses worldwide.

But we’re more than just award-winning — we’re experience-focused. Guests enjoy on-site amenities like our Beach Park Playground with 130,000 pounds of beach sand and ziplines, an 85° heated pool, premium log cabins, a free game room, three playgrounds, basketball, yard games, and the only public bus stop at any Williamsburg campground.

We’re also known for our impeccably clean, modern restrooms with granite finishes, first-class Wi-Fi and cable, and special touches like free fresh coffee, donuts, and pet treats. Our dog park, relaxing fire pit areas, and friendly team make it easy to unwind and feel right at home.

What truly sets us apart is the heart we put into everything we do. Hosting isn’t just our business — it’s our family tradition.
