Vintage charm and modern details combine in the delightful Tulip Tree Chalet. This mountain getaway is located within walking distance of the famous Shatley Springs Restaurant (you'll want to walk back and forth to work off the calories from the family-style portions of comfort food they serve).

Looking for warmth or easy ambiance? Then you'll be pleased with the gas logs in the stone fireplace, flanked by artistic and comfortable rockers. The sofa that invites you to stay a while and enjoy the view from the wall of windows to the woodland setting.

The galley kitchen is both rustic and contemporary. Granite counters on traditional pine cabinets blend the old and the new with everything you'll need for your vacation and plenty of counter space for a couple of cooks at a time. The dining table seats 6 but you might opt for eating al fresco for all your meals on the porch if the weather permits.

The master bedroom is on the main floor, and has a cozy king bed, so you'll sleep well before heading out to explore the area. Upstairs is a large bedroom with a queen a full bathroom and a reading loft.

On the lower level a bright family room, with a gas log “wood” stove and a second TV offers more sleeping with bunk beds for an overflow crowd.

There's plenty of outdoor “rooms” to enjoy at Tulip Tree cabin. Open decking surrounds the main level, with Adirondack chairs and outdoor dining. On the lower level, rockers invite you to relax and absorb the clean mountain air. A gas fire pit on the large side deck is the perfect spot to gather round and enjoy one another in the evening. The woodland setting is perfect for visits from mountain birds – watch for cardinals, red-bellied woodpeckers with their bright orange caps, nuthatches and Carolina wrens which you'll often hear before you spot them.

From Tulip Tree Chalet you can easily explore a wide area of the county, and even head north just about 30 minutes into Virginia to visit the amazing Grayson Highlands State Park, with wild ponies, trails, historic and authentic mountain cabins to give you a sense of life here in the not-too-distant past, and a great visitor's center.

Or head to the Virginia Creeper bike trail in Damascus, Virginia. It's just over an hour's drive, but a day's worth of bicycling (bring your own or rent one from the many outfitters) along the old railroad bed, in and amongst farm fields and the most beautiful creek.

If you like interesting flavors, you'll want to try our local hard cider mill, Molley Chompers, just 15 minutes from the cabin in Lansing and even have lunch or dinner at Pie on the Mountain. If you want to hike or just drive and see some awesome views, we recommend the Pond Mountain Game Lands (check their schedule for seasons when they are open). You can drive well into the park for vistas about 300 degrees in many directions!

West Jefferson is less than 20 mintues from the cabin. Explore our remarkable downtown, with shops, galleries, restaurants antiques and festivals. We've got two microbreweries – Boondocks and New River Brewing. And if you want to catch a movie, we had two small theaters. Only minutes from town you can drive up Mount Jefferson for one of the best views around, or bring some take-out for a picnic lunch.

Of course, you don't have to go anywhere! You might find all you want is to escape the world for a few days, and just being is always an option at Tulip Tree Chalet.

Dogs Welcome! Must be well behaved, leash/crate trained, 2 years or older and 25lbs or less. $50 / per pet. 2 dog limit.

Parking
The house was wonderful. The yard is not kept up. There is a lot of debris, tree limbs, leaves and small trees growing everywhere. The deck is slick due to mildew. The drive way is very steep. They even put in a longer driveway however this is still very steep. I have a SUV ,not 4 wheel drive, and when it rained I could not get up driveway. The hot tub was great but only 2 jets were working. The TV worked but the volume kept going to mute. I contacted the rental and they brought us another TV but it was small.

Needs updating
Stay was okay. We would not stay here again. Inside was clean but very dark and dreary. Outside needs cleaning. Just an older house that needs some work. If you had more than one car I don’t know where you would park.

Chalet Up on a hill
Steep driveway followed by steps inside and out. Very dark home due to trees all around and poor lighting inside. Clean yet could use a thorough cleaning inside and out. Very rustic and neighborhood very hilly. No fan on stove, so fire alarm sounds when cooking. Some may enjoy place but we are in our 70’s and prefer less rustic and better walking areas with our dog. Will say the management company was excellent responding to our problem with the tv when we arrived. Also showers excellent and water got hot quickly. WI-FI was excellent as well.

Relaxing stay
We had a wonderful girls getaway weekend and can’t wait to make it a tradition! I will say there are a few things to make note of though. There’s not really any good directions for finding the cabin, especially at night. When you turn on walnut hills circle, you make the first left (seems like a driveway but it’s a street/circle) and it’s the second house on the right. We came in at night so that made it more difficult but even during the day the house numbers are not noticeable and really should be at the end of the drive. We actually went too far, because we making circles as we tried to find it and ended up on a really creepy driveway. The cabin can be very dark as well. During the day, the natural light is beautiful and perfect but at night the lights are so dim, it’s hard to see. And there are a bunch of lamps but we found that a lot of them didn’t turn on. Maybe it was just us. There’s also not a fan for the oven or a fan at all to circulate air so every time we cooked, the fire alarm went off. It was annoying but not a deal breaker for us. The cabin was very accommodating for us though and the deck and scenery is absolutely beautiful!! Overall it was a great experience and we made some great memories!
