Blue Ridge Mountain Chalet - 13 Acres: Modern, Privacy & Windows

Black Dog

• Contemporary meets cabin rustic experience
• Nature is the key element in the cabin's design
• 13 acres, tons of windows & decked outdoor space
• Wood Fireplace, outdoor dining & gas grill
• WiFi, W/D, A/C & CABLE TV
• Dog friendly - see policy below

Black Dog shakes up the typical cabin image with modern styling. We like to call it “contemporary rustic.” Nature is a key element of this home's design, with its abundant use of wood, windows, and large, comfortable outdoor spaces.

Set on 13 private wooded acres on the northern side of Ashe County, this home is the epitome of peace and quiet. Perfect for bird watching, with luck you'll also spot deer, turkeys and raccoons. Hike in the woods, or bask in nature from a comfortable rocking chair or porch swing on the spacious decking. Take advantage of the outdoor gas grill, and dine al fresco.

Inside, the vaulted wood ceilings enhance the mountain feeling. In the sun-filled living room, a sense of nature continues, thanks to a bank of windows along one wall, and sliding glass doors along the other. Chill in the evening watching a movie on the comfy leather furniture, while soaking in the cabin atmosphere in front of a crackling fire. (Don't forget to bring firewood!)

The kitchen is well-equipped for home-cooked meals, with plenty of counter space. From the window at the kitchen sink, take in the view of the surrounding woods. The adjacent dining room overlooks the porch and woods through large sliding doors.

Black Dog offers one-floor living, so you don't have to worry about lugging suitcases upstairs! The master bedroom has a queen-sized bed, and the adjoining bath has double vanities and a tub/shower combination. The additional two bedrooms have comfy double beds and a shared bathroom. The cabin is also outfitted with a laundry room and utility sink, perfect for longer stays.

Come get away from it all at the Black Dog cabin!

Location, Location, Location

The Black Dog is located in the perfect spot for exploring the area's best fishing spots, close to the famous Helton Creek. From this location, it's only 30 minutes to Grayson Highlands State Park, where wild ponies will greet you up on the Massie Gap Trail. Come in the spring and you might see the foals. The park provides great hiking, a replica of a historic mountain settlement, an interesting exhibit of the history of the area, and more.

Not too far from Grayson Highlands is Damascus, Virginia, a quaint mountain town situated on the Virginia Creeper Trail, famed for bicycling. Rent bikes in town and the vendor will provide a shuttle ride to the start of the trail at White Top. You can also hike or ride horseback along the old railroad bed, crossing trestles over one of the region's most beautiful creeks.

From the cabin, downtown West Jefferson is less than 30 minutes away. There you'll enjoy the many quaint shops, galleries, farmer's market and restaurants, as well as the famous Ashe County Cheese. Less than 15 minutes from Black Dog you'll find Lansing, home of Molley Chomper Cidery, where you can sample a large variety of hard cider. When you get hungry, check out Pie On the Mountain, known for great pizza. Across the road is the Lansing Creeper Park, with a walking trail and monthly Music in the Barn concerts.

Ready for adventure? Spend time kayaking, canoeing or tubing on the New River. Local outfitters will hook you up with whatever you need. Other High Country recreation opportunities include fishing, hunting, zip-lining, cave exploration, mining for gems, and more. Mountain Aire Golf is a gorgeous public course in West Jefferson, offering 18 holes of beautifully-maintained fairways, with amazing scenery and reasonable prices. Don't forget to take a drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway, America's most beautiful road, with some of the country's most awe-inspiring views and photo opps.

Black Dog in NC's High Country offers a mountain vacation with something for everyone!

Absolutely Peaceful
Loved having coffee on the deck each morning in peace and quiet. The cabin was awesome and comfortable; loved all of the windows. The drive to Grayson Highlands, West Jefferson were a little long but very beautiful. Hopefully will be able to come back sometime soon.

Lovely, comfortable house in a secluded peaceful setting
We really enjoyed our time at the house. It was clean and comfortable and gave our group ample space. The large deck was great for relaxing, we enjoyed watching the hummingbirds on the beautiful Bee Balm flowers across the front porch. Hiking trail behind the house provided a nice, quick outing while we had iffy weather. My only complaints were that there was a faint smell of cigarette smoke that was really only noticable when entering, like someone who used to live there must have smoked, and you have to pack out your own trash. The dropoff for trash is a 20 minute drive away and requires that you take a badge from the house to drop it off...and then you have to return the badge to the house to avoid a $100 fee. So unless you want to drive home with bags of garbage in your car, plan on an extra 40+ minutes of travel included in your departure. I feel like taking care of this should be included in the cleaning fee. It was definitely an annoying inconvenience that I think should be disclosed before booking, but ultimately would not prevent me from booking again.
