About this property
Little Bay Eco House - Kaka Cottage overlooking the ocean and up in the trees
Welcome to our contemporary eco-retreat overlooking stunning Little Bay. Powered by sunshine and rainwater, we are nestled on 10 hectares of protected native bush with sea views across to Aotea - Great Barrier Island. The house is north facing with 180-degree views over the valley and ocean, not another house in sight. Feel totally removed from the hustle and bustle. Perfect for star-gazing at night. We are 1.5 km from Little Bay and 2 km from Waikawau beach, both beautiful sandy beaches.
• Relax, unwind and enjoy our peaceful view of bush and ocean
• Swim, fish or beachwalk at two beautiful nearby beaches, Little Bay and Waikawau Bay
• Explore the remote Northern Coromandel, drive up to Stony Bay or Fletcher Bay to walk part of the Coromandel Walkway for amazing coastal views.
• Snorkel or boulder hop in nearby Tuateawa
From the two double bedrooms you can lie in bed and watch the morning light over the water and the everchanging skies. Hear the tuis, kereru, bellbirds in the bush, and the kaka on their flight to Moehau each morning and evening. At night you will hear moreporks and sometimes kiwi calling in the surrounding bush. Children will enjoy our bunkroom with views through the trees.
We've had lots of lovely reviews since opening our home for guests and here are a few:
"What a find! We absolutely loved our stay. Amazing views, lovely interior. Felt quite luxurious. Great original art work. Good day walks nearby, and awesome swimming at both Little Bay and Waikawau. Beautiful, peaceful setting; we star gazed at night and listened to the kiwis calling. Treat yourself to a few nights at Kaka Cottage!" 7 April 2021
"Wonderful scenic bach. Fantastic location, low key off-grid yet simply elegant. Perfect to create lasting summer memories. Thank you." 7 Feb 2021
"A magical spot. A beautiful home with an outstanding view and only a short drive to the beach at Little Bay. The accommodation is fully equipped and exceeded our expectations. " Jan 2021
We are solar powered (electricity and hotwater), collect rainwater, and treat our wastes through a worm based system. Come and enjoy a fully off-grid experience! (BookaBach Best Eco Friendly Bronze Award in 2015)
• WiFi available (but if you want a fully disconnected experience, let us know)
• Spark, Vodafone, Two Degrees all good for hotspot internet and phone coverage
• Smart TV available, HDMI cable to connect to your own laptop or streaming services
• Or disconnect, read books and play our range of boardgames!
Please note our off-grid solar power system does not allow for electric vehicle charging. Charging stations are available in Thames and Coromandel town but there are none in northern Coromandel.
All linens are included, but if you can bring your own beach towels that will help us to save water.
Ideally placed for exploring Waikawau, Port Charles, Sandy Bay, Stony Bay, Kennedy Bay, Tuateawa and Colville. Be prepared that the roads are mostly gravel up this way.
Please note, there are no nearby shops. Petrol and provisions can be found at Colville General Store, 20 mins drive away, or in Coromandel Town, 45 mins drive away. The kitchen pantry is well stocked and freely available, but please be aware it is best to come prepared with food and treats!
Come relax and enjoy an escape to a more peaceful life surrounded by nature.
Notes:
A cleaning fee is required but guests are asked to leave the house tidy on departure.
If you are booking for 6 adults, please be aware that you will need to be mindful of water and hot water usage
