It was the quietest space I have sat in for years Except for the wooden birds who just before sunrise began to flutter and forage for caterpillars Except for the buck surprised to see me on the porch, stomped and snorted Except for the roosters a ridgeline over getting ready for another day of scratching Except for the walnuts dropping on the tin roof of an old shed
