We are excited to be re-opening the Sea & Sky Retreat for vacation rentals after some time away for remodeling. We would love to have you join us and invite you to read about the home below!
Essence
We call our home Sea & Sky Retreat because that’s exactly how it feels. We landed here because we fell in love with the airy, hilltop feeling of the property in concert with the sensual and transparent experience inside the dwelling – kind of a blend between vast horizons and a calming rootedness. The house really brings people together and makes it easy to enjoy the outside even when you are inside by the fire. It’s a wonderful place to watch the view, enjoy a glass of wine, play cards or read a book. When the sun is shining this is about as good as it gets, often sheltered from the wind and about 20 degrees warmer than the beach.
Setting
The dwelling itself is fairly modest on the outside. It’s a basic cottage/ranch style home of about 1300 sf with big windows and generous mahogany decking on the south and west sides. It sits on an open grassy knoll about 220 feet above ocean level, flanked by wooded stream corridors on either side. Directly to the southeast are about 8 acres of Sitka Spruce forest with some enormous old trees where Bald Eagles like to perch. The yard is flat and open, making it a great place for frisbee or paddleball.
Views
The sweeping views to the south framed by giant Sitka Spruce are delightful, and so iconic of the Northwest Coast. From the house you can see from Manzanita beach, with its breaking swell and kite surfers, all the way to the sea stacks along Cape Meares. To the west, the view of the Pacific is equally stunning. At this altitude, you can still hear the ocean, but the sweep of blue horizon is vast, the whale spotting is excellent, and it’s common to have bald eagles fly low over the house as they take advantage of updrafts and the welcoming treetops.
(One caveat: Our neighbor’s house in front steals a slice of the Pacific, but the imperfection doesn’t seem to detract. There is more than enough ocean and sky to overwhelm the senses. Plus, our neighbors are our friends, which adds to the special feeling of this hilltop community. We feel fortunate to share this place with them.)
Interior
The interior of the home is more stylish, comfortable and sophisticated than the exterior would suggest. It has a cozy but pleasant floor plan with 3 comfortable bedrooms oriented to the west and northwest, and two clean and modern full bathrooms, one with an inviting shower and the other with a deep soaking tub and shower. There is also a third half bath off the yoga room. The living room and dining area share a large bank of south facing windows that let in a tremendous amount of light and frequent sunshine, thanks to Neahkahnie’s amazing micro climate. This great room is dominated by views of the ocean and forest. The living room centers on an angled, glass-doored fireplace with a raised concrete hearth. Seating options are casual and comfortable but refined. In the dining area there is a spacious walnut table with some very cool Tom Dixon lighting and fun Jesús Gasca chairs. The kitchen, open to the views and other living spaces, is modern with high quality cabinetry, quartz counters, and stainless appliances including an induction cooktop. We love to cook and have appointed the kitchen with an abundance of high quality cookware and utensils. Dinnerware, flatware, glassware, etc. are all clean and simple in design but of a much higher caliber than you would expect to find in a vacation property.
We have also recently added a lovely space to the home that can be used as an area to lounge, play games and take in the amazing views through the beautiful windows. This room also serves as a tranquil space for yoga as seen in our photographs. An outdoor shower was recently added for a quick rinse after a day at the beach, or a luxurious soak under the stars. Future plans include the completion of an outdoor sauna (not yet operational).
Some Details
We’ve tried to keep things simple while honoring the rich textures of the environment by bringing our own subtle expressions of fun and luxury into the space. Some examples include artwork from noted Northwest painters, wool throws from Wales and Oregon’s high desert and organic natural latex mattresses.
