About this property
Romantic rainforest retreat with magical waterfall
In the heart of the World Heritage Daintree, "Fairy Falls" is the perfect place to escape the rat race and immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of the oldest rainforest on earth. A private path leads directly to national parkland and the enchanting waterfall that gives the house its name. It's incredibly private, its cascading waters permanently feeding a natural plunge pool, ideal for bathing and picnicking waterside. Maybe you'll you'll share it with an electric-blue Ulysses or even an elusive cassowary, or hear the sweet whispers of our resident sunbirds but you're unlikely to see any other humans. The property is set in two acres of pristine rainforest north of the Daintree River and also adjoins several more acres of national parkland, “Fairy Falls” offers you the chance to forget the stresses and strains of everyday life and become fully immersed in the unique tropical wilderness of Far North Queensland.
THE WATERFALL AND SWIMMING HOLE
Making the most of your stay means following the private path from the garden for 100 metres, until you come to the cascading waterfall with its deep swimming hole, just a two-minute walk away. Fairy Falls – the waterfall – is on national parkland and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Daintree Rainforest, which has been in continuous existence for over 135 million years. Use the picnic set provided, pack a lunch and while away a few hours waterside, surrounded by the birds and butterflies of this timeless place; take a dip, lie back in the crystal clear waters and gaze into the sky above, framed by the canopy of the world’s oldest jungle – for a while, let yourself become part of this truly unforgettable slice of paradise.
Please note that swimming is at your own risk and due to its setting, "Fairy Falls" is unsuitable for children under 12.
The path can be steep and slippery in places so please take care.
A PEACEFUL AND TRANQUIL ENVIRONMENT
The Daintree is home to diverse wildlife, from colourful birds, stripey possums, tree kangaroos and the elusive cassowary. As you will be stewards of this remarkable ecosystem during your stay, we need you to cherish their habitat by minimising noise, keeping conversations and music to a considerate volume.
The community in the Daintree lives in harmony with the rainforest. Please be mindful of their peace and privacy too as sound travels easily through the rainforest.
If you are looking for party town then Fairy Falls is not for you.
WELCOMING YOU TO “FAIRY FALLS”
A welcome tray of cheese and crackers and a complimentary bottle of wine will be waiting for you at Fairy Falls. And, to get you started, there is also coffee, Daintree tea and, in the fridge, long-life milk and a cool jug of filtered Daintree water.
DAINTREE RIVER FERRY
Just purchase a one-way ferry ticket when you arrive at the Daintree Ferry, a complimentary return ticket will be waiting for you at Fairy Falls.
THE HOUSE
“Fairy Falls” – the house – is fully off grid and as eco-friendly as possible, powered by solar and blessed with pure Daintree drinking water. The property is a large log cabin with two bedrooms and two bathrooms, a living room and two kitchens (the main indoors, the other outdoors), a separate study and a huge covered entertaining area overlooking the rainforest with glimpses between the trees of Thornton Peak, which, at nearly 1,400 metres, towers over the Daintree (the deck even has subtle spotlights for night-time jungle viewing).
The house boasts bohemian décor with an eclectic mix of Near East, Far East and Far North influences, including beautiful Balinese and Indian contemporary and antique furniture, and artwork showcasing a few of the fauna and flora that make this corner of the world so special.
Both bedrooms have queen beds and the master bedroom – the Ulysses room – has a luxurious ensuite with a beautiful feature bath, separate shower and petrified-wood basins. Guests in the second bedroom – the Sunbird room – are able to use a separate guest bathroom with a shower and a natural stone basin. There is a separate study too, complete with a large oak desk and monitors for you to plug into. And, should you need it, the study also has a pull-out sofa bed (with a pillow-topper for extra comfort), so it can double-up as a third bedroom. All linen, towels and toiletries are provided.
The main (indoor) kitchen is open to the living room and has a rustic appeal with beautifully crafted cherry penda benchtops, antique Indian wall cupboards, a free-standing 900mm LPG gas oven with five burners, a large fridge-freezer, ample cupboard space and a double Belfast sink.
LAUNDRY FACILITIES IN MOSSMAN
Please note there is no washing machine or dryer at Fairy Falls. A clothes-airer is provided for drying clothes and swimwear but if you need to use a washing machine, there is a laundrette in Mossman.
ENTERTAINING AREAS
Outdoors there is the oversize covered entertaining area with its own rustic kitchen of natural-edge cherry penda benchtops, a sink with cold water, barbeque, and a bar fridge to keep your wine and beer at the perfect temperature for the tropics (not to mention close to hand!). The deck also has an outdoor dining area with a natural-edge mango dining table and benches for sharing special meals, as well as a day bed, sitting area, and ceiling fans to keep you cool on hot days. Just kick back with a glass of wine and the one you love, watch the wildlife or simply stargaze as the Milky Way meanders overhead.
Beneath the house is a space we call "The Hide", consisting of two hammocks, a hammock chair and cushions with a camouflage netting backdrop, from where you can observe the garden and the rainforest beyond.
THE GARDEN
Depending on the season, the garden has many tropical fruit trees including soursops, durians, love apples, miracle fruit and Thai coriander, so help yourself to the perfect ingredients for cooking up a mouth-watering dining experience of your own creation.
BROADBAND AND MOBILE PHONE
We have NBN satellite broadband, fast enough to stream movies on the 50 inch smart TV in the living room (to access entertainment platforms, please use your own membership details). However, we are in the jungle so I can't guarantee the connection. You are also likely to experience some slow speeds and buffering from time to time.
Mobile phone reception is patchy but just walkaround a bit to get a signal.
GUEST ACCESS
The entire property is yours to enjoy and there is onsite parking for several cars.
OTHER THINGS TO NOTE
We are fully off grid so we rely on solar power as well as pure Daintree rainwater. We also use LPG gas for hot water and cooking, and have a septic system for sewerage.
An automated-generator provides backup power should the solar system need topping up, but as local restrictions mean it can only kick in between 5:30am and 10pm, we ask guests to use electricity carefully, avoiding use of hair dryers, straightening irons and the like. Depending on conditions, please also use water wisely, and only flush organic matter down the loos!
NO EV CHARGING HAIRDRYERS, STRAIGHTENING IRONS, KETTLES OR TOASTERS
Please note there are no EV charging points north of the river. The nearest one is in Mossman. Our off-grid solar set up does not have the capacity to charge EVs - it will blow the inverter which will put us out of action for weeks so it's very important that no EVs are plugged in (or hairdryers, straightening irons etc). Thanks for your understanding.
In short, “Fairy Falls” may not be for those who prefer standard, hermetically-sealed 5-star “corporate” accommodation. On the other hand, if you’re wanting to escape to your own private rainforest hideaway that offers something completely different, and if you’re up for immersing yourself in this timeless wilderness and living amongst the wildlife – such as the odd gecko in the living room (welcome to the tropics!) – then this is definitely the place for you.
Please also note that, due to its setting, "Fairy Falls" is unsuitable for children under 12. Also, strictly no smoking, parties or pets.

About the host
Hosted by Jacqueline Biggs
I am passionate about this tiny corner of the globe which contains such an amazing variety of flora and fauna. I have tried to keep Fairy Falls as eco-friendly as possible so that we have a minimal impact on our surroundings. I love this little slice of paradise.
Why they chose this property
The house itself is nestled in 2 acres of rainforest. It is remote, peaceful and very private. It is full of beautiful furniture, artwork and lighting. The large master bedroom has an en suite bathroom complete with freestanding bath, separate shower and beautiful petrified wood basins.
There is a huge entertaining area with an outdoor kitchen and dining area with ceiling fans, so it can be used in all weathers.
There are Balinese daybeds inside and out for you to relax on and hammocks under the house where you can watch the wildlife.

What makes this property unique
The most amazing thing about this property is Fairy Falls – an enchanting waterfall and swimming hole – just a two minute walk from the garden. Even though Fairy Falls is on National parkland, it feels like your own private waterfall as it is almost impossible to access any other way.
The water is deep, and the waterfall runs all year round. It’s an incredible place to relax, unwind and immerse yourself in the crystal clear Daintree water.
