Welcome to DC Storybook. Our beautiful home is located in Wesley Heights, a quiet and serene residential neighborhood located in Washington DC. Known for its tree-lined streets, green spaces, and charming homes, the neighborhood is an ideal destination for travelers looking for a peaceful and picturesque setting that is still within easy reach of downtown DC.

The Space:
The charming interior features generously proportioned entertaining rooms, as well comfortable family living spaces. The traditional rooms are light-filled, with an abundance of natural sunlight coming from large windows throughout. The entry foyer seamlessly transitions to the original living room, which offers a lovely central fireplace. The neighboring dining room can also be accessed from the reception foyer. The living room provides direct access to the sunroom, which has a desk to work from or for the kids to do homework, as well as a full digital piano. The heart of the home is the large kitchen/family room, which is exceptionally scaled and enhanced with elevated design. The gourmet kitchen offers a large center island with a breakfast bar, abundant cabinetry storage, a six-burner range, and a breakfast nook. The kitchen/family room flows onto the large patio for al fresco dining and seating under a wisteria-covered pergola. The second level has four bedrooms and three full bathrooms, including the gracious primary suite. The primary bedroom is well-appointed with an en suite bathroom with a large freestanding soaking tub. Off of the primary bedroom is a charming kids room with a twin size bed. The two additional bedrooms on this floor are spacious and light-filled, one with a queen bed and en suite bathroom. The lower level has a family room with a full-size sleeper sofa and full bathroom. This is the perfect place for your family's comfortable stay!

The home is not shared. Guests will have access to the entire home.

The Neighborhood:
Just south of American University, Wesley Heights is dotted with stately early 20th century homes that feature grand architecture and beautiful gardens in streets lined with flowering trees, providing a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of downtown DC. The quiet, uncrowded neighborhood is bordered on three sides by Battery Kemble Park and Archbold Glover Park, which feature walking and biking trails through woodland. Although the neighborhood is predominantly residential, it still offers plenty of dining and shopping options, including the Tenleytown and Cathedral Heights neighborhoods just a short distance away. Here you will find a variety of restaurants, cafes, and shops, including Whole Foods, Starbucks, and many others.

Getting Around:
Since this is a very residential neighborhood, the easiest way to get here or get around will be by car or ride service. A Metrobus stop 2 blocks away on New Mexico Ave is serviced by the N2 route leading directly to DuPont Circle and Farragut Square downtown. Just one block away, Metrobus route M4 leads directly to Tenleytown, which can also be reached in less than 30 minutes’ walk. Tenleytown is the closest Metro stop, on the Red line, which takes you right downtown.

Other Things to Note:
There is so much history in DC, and this home is a part of it. The house was built in 1932 for U.S. Navy Captain Walter S. Diehl, the Navy’s pioneer of aircraft engineering and aeronautics.
Captain Diehl live in the home until his death in 1976, after which the Navy named a ship in his honor.
Captain Diehl planted a rose bush for his wife each year on their anniversary, so that by the time he died the home’s gardens had more than 40 rose bushes. Most have now died, but the three rose bushes along the western fence line are survivors.

Captain Diehl’s widow Clara sold the house in 1977 to White House Press Secretary Jody Powell, who was President Carter’s press secretary from 1977 to 1981, Neighbors remember occasions when Powell hosted garden parties for President Carter in the backyard, with Secret Service guarding the neighborhood. Powell and his family built the rear extension and lived in the house until 2000.
