This was described as a luxury historic property, so we (family of 4: three adults and a teenager) decided to splurge a bit for the Kyoto portion of our vacation. We were disappointed. There were broken cabinet handles, a missing towel bar, an electronic mirror on the fritz, and the air conditioner in the master bedroom did not output sufficient cold air. The property is maintained by a management firm and they don't use the VRBO message system. When I emailed them to let them know of the problems, I was told that the AC and other issues were not a problem, although they did come back with a fan, which helped a little with the temperature in the master bedroom. This house is on a major street with lots of noise. Foam earplugs were provided. But that didn't really help with the frequent sirens we heard. The decor was beautiful and the back garden looked very nice. BUT, the "traditional Japanese style" means that the doors are about 5'4" high. If you're taller than that, frequent head banging on the low door frames will occur. The back garden was also infested with mosquitoes and we got attacked when we tried to go out. And we saw a mouse in the kitchen. We did notify management. The stairs are painted black and very difficult to see in the dark. They didn't provide a drying rack for laundry, nor sufficient towel bars: one in each bathroom is not enough. Beds were very uncomfortable and the master was two twins pushed together. Very disappointed. Overpriced.
