About this property

Noosa Hinterland Holiday Retreat. De-stress in an Eco-cabin surrounded by nature

“Kookaburra Cabin – forest experience abounding with wildlife”. We have the great pleasure in providing our newly furbished, forest retreat where you can relax and enjoy country living in beautiful, rural Traveston. Our main residence is close by (50m), however, you have a private, fenced area open to your own bush ecosystem. Our secluded 10 acre property, hidden down a ‘No through’ road, is 5 kilometres from Cooran and 40 minutes from Noosa. It is a Humane Society International ‘Wildlife Land Trust’ sanctuary and we are members of the Land for Wildlife program because we value the natural wonders of our surroundings and are committed to preserving and improving this patch of earth we are entrusted with. Our desire is to share its natural richness and, through direct experience, increase understanding of the intricacies of ecosystems that support our wellbeing. The property is located in the Great Sandy Biosphere and neighbours the Noosa Biosphere. During your stay you can explore the local area to enjoy natural beauty spots, have a swim, go for a forest walk, head to Noosa to enjoy the beach and shopping, eat and drink at the fabulous, local restaurants, micro-breweries and cafes and join the market throng on weekends. Other things to do include: • Bird watching – we have recorded more than 120 species. There’s a birdbath to view from your patio. • Photography opportunities. • Inspiration for artists. • Local hiking, biking and horse riding. You may bring a horse by prior arrangement. There is flat space to turn a horse float and area for installing your horse's enclosure. 'Kookaburra Cabin' has been designed and built by the hands of family members and friends. It is a unique studio with a bathroom, basic kitchen and outdoor, sheltered patio. Fittings and furniture have been sourced from reclaimed items and materials as much as possible. The outside toilet is architecturally designed to make the most of the forest views while being sensitive to the surrounding ecosystems. An umbrella is provided to cover the short distance if it is raining at the critical moment! Otherwise, you can take the journey slowly and enjoy the birds living their life or the starry night sky above. Access to the property entrance is along a maintained dirt road. Large vehicles e.g. motorhomes, long trailers > 5m, are discouraged as our driveway is sinuous with trees close to the edges. For the lovers of nature, the lack of TV and Wi-Fi and limited mobile coverage will be the relief we crave from constant noise of a busy life. Our water is pure, unfiltered rainwater. You are welcome to bring bottled water, filter jug or purifiers of you are anxious about drinking it. We live on it and love it! There is no washing machine, however, we can do a wash for you for a small fee if requested. Otherwise, there is a coin laundromat in Pomona. You have a washing line to hang things out.

Lovely retreat
We spent two nights at Kookaburra Cabin. It's a nice space with privacy and our own grassy area bordered by lovely tall Gum trees and rainforest. The cabin had everything we needed to make our meals. We loved the colored lights in the ceiling and some other quirky touches. The bed was comfortable (nice linen sheets). The outside drop-loo was novel and worked well. Great bush views from the loo! Cesar and Eva were really welcoming and told us all about what to do around there. We went for a refreshing swim at nearby Mothar Mountain Rockpool and we liked the unique brewery in Cooran. We also went to Noosa for another swim. We'll definitely be coming back soon and recommend this place to anyone looking for a beautiful get-away.

Hello from Cesar and Eva! We love where we live. We both have had long periods of overseas living and appreciate the serenity that this area offers. Our property is secluded but close to a wonderful community and huge variety of places to go and activities to be involved in. We have felt for a long time that the property is large and could do with a bit of sharing, hence the 4-year project to create 'Kookaburra Cabin'. We have a strong urge to provide a space that calms, inspires and connects people to the support systems of nature that surround us here. Eva is an ecologist and spends her working time with the Mary River community to improve the health of land and water. Cesar's heart lies in philosophy, ethics and community and gives his energy to keeping local school facilities clean in order to provide a great teaching and learning environment. Both of us work hard to maintain the health of the ecosystems here through revegetation, weeding and enhancing a diversity of habitats for fauna. Besides the wildlife, we share the property with our free-ranging ducks and flock of laying chickens. They are good company! We have a good sized vegetable garden to feed ourselves and share with others. Excess produce goes to our local Mary Valley Community Harvest community group of non-spray growers. We donate our time to the MVCH market stall in Pomona most Saturday mornings; a chance to see our friends and neighbours, and share a slice of life and coffee!

Why they chose this property

This property has wonderful diversity including Spotted gum ridges, Grey gum slopes and rainforested seasonal waterways. We have held the property since 1998 and fell in love with the mixture of landforms and vegetation that make this 10 acres feel endless! It was a cattle property prior to purchase and we decided not to continue grazing; deciding instead to give nature some space. It has been amazing to watch the transformation of vegetation regrowth and increase in animal species over the decades. We joined the Land for Wildlife program way back then and, more recently, registered the property with Humane Society International's 'Wildlife Land Trust' program to further promote our intentions.

What makes this property unique

We have a driveway that evokes a sense of adventure as it winds downwards through eucalypt forests and opens at the dam and flat country where we have our vegetable garden. Then, past more trees, our living area and the area of Kookaburra Cabin is revealed. We have so many birds that come an go with the seasons to enjoy the forests and the open space. Koalas and Echidnas pass through and Goannas are frequent visitors. In the wet season the creek may flow, the frogs call out and the area is alive with activity. Winter brings foggy mornings and our local Eastern grey kangaroos, Red-necked wallabies and Swamp wallabies warm themselves in the sun and graze on green pick. Humans and wildlife living together; your visit to this property provides you with time and space to glean wisdom from the hum of nature.
