Incredible stay at a magical retreat in gold country!
We shot an independent film in and around this amazing home over the course of two weeks and it was both a stunning location for our film and an incredible place to be for that time. The river rushing outside, the morning light through the trees, stars above at night...spectacular! Our hosts were so responsive to our needs and the 'Canary Lodge' was an absurdly cozy place to stay. I would love to come back for a vacation or writing retreat some time in the future!
The house was perfect for our family of 8 and 2 dogs. Location on the river was great, with small rapids and big rocks to climb on. Relaxing on the deck listening to the river was perfect. The house is stocked with everything needed and more, and we were met with a nice bottle of wine. We will definitely be coming back. This house ranks in the top 3 of our favorite places to go.

Old house with character in a pretty nice spot
We chose to stay here on a whim as we wanted some time in the mountains. The house is old but charming and is right on the river. Our stay was during the winter and in many ways it felt like the house was outfitted more for summer stays (very light bed linens), but the host was responsive in helping to ensure we were comfortable. The town of West Point is unfortunately a somewhat sad place relative to other towns in the region like Murphys, but it provided easy access to nature.

Response from VrboOwner on 5 March 2025
From the owner: "Hi Brad, we’re glad you appreciated the charm of our home and its location by the river. We understand that expectations can vary, and while our home is a more rustic mountain getaway, we did our best to ensure your comfort during your stay. We appreciate your feedback and are always looking for ways to improve the guest experience. Thank you for choosing our home, and we hope you had a great time exploring the area!"
Beautiful Location, But Unacceptable Cleanliness – Not Recommended Until Resolved
The location of this home is truly stunning—peaceful, secluded, and surrounded by nature. It has so much potential as a relaxing getaway. However, the condition and cleanliness of the house completely ruined our experience. This is a 100 year-old property, and while we didn’t expect hotel-like luxury, we did expect basic hygiene and cleanliness—which were shockingly absent. Here’s what we encountered:•The upstairs bathroom window was covered in spider webs.•The floors were filthy, with dead insects scattered across the upstairs area—clear signs that no cleaning or vacuuming had been done before our arrival.•Both bathroom hand soap dispensers were completely empty.•The main bedroom had no curtain, and the one later added was a see-through fabric that offered zero privacy.•The house smelled awful, and the cleaner told us the trash wasn’t taken out due to no trash bags in storage—a basic oversight that left us with rotting garbage inside the home. While the host was responsive and attempted to help, the core issues were never properly addressed, and we were left cleaning, improvising, and dealing with the mess instead of enjoying our vacation. We’ve included photos and videos as evidence with our complaint to Vrbo and Evolve Travel, and I strongly recommend reviewing it before considering this property. This could be a great stay with better care, but until basic hygiene and cleanliness are prioritized, I do not recommend this rental.
