Abridged history of Castelnau castle
Etienne Boileau, provost of Paris and author of the Books of Trades accompanied King Saint Louis during the 12th century crusades. His statue is on the Paris City Hall.
His descendants, ennobled by Charles V in 1371, took possession of the Viscount of Saint Felix from the Château de Castelnau in 1500.
Since that time, it has always belonged to the same family whose members have held high office.
The revocation of the Edict of Nantes results in the departure of almost the entire family abroad, with the exception of Maurice Boileau de Castelnau who keeps property and titles.
During the period of the Camisard unrest, the castle served as a refuge for Pierre Laporte, known as Rolland, chief of the Huguenots.
His death sounded the death knell for religious wars. A stele commemorates his death.
The Valfons family was led by the Viscount of Sebourg, who created Marquis de Valfons de la Calmette by Louis XV after the Battle of Fontenoy.
In 1836, the Valfons family took possession of the castle through the marriage of Gabrielle Boileau de Castelnau with the Marquis de Valfons.
Their descendants still own the Château.
