Wonderful time...
Had a wonderful time staying in Harrington. It was so relaxing and peaceful. The country feel of the cottage was exactly what we where looking for. And the views where amazing!!
The cottage was the perfect place to relax. The view is beautiful. We enjoyed the variety of trails in the surrounding. This place was exactly what we were looking for!!
We had a great stay at Rod and Lucile’s cottage. It is very secluded and quiet, just what we were looking for. They were great hosts and gave us wonderful recommendations and advice. Will definitely come back if another trip to this beautiful state is in our future.
A great place to unwind. Watch the tide go in and out, along with the deer, turkeys and birds in the yard!
Clean, everything you need available. Confortable bed.
Truly feels like a piece of heaven.
Lovely place! Rod and Lucile were absolutely delightful and very responsive! Checked on us when Hurricane Lee was making an appearance!
3 things not in the listing:
No washer/laundry
While the view of the bay is beautiful you cannot really access the water … the tides do not permit.
They no longer have a Wi-Fi hotspot- which didn’t really impact us but fyi!
Maine became a favorite spot for us. The cottage was so charming despite the fact we had no internet or wi-fi there. A trip to the Paisly Loon in Cherryfield gave us delicious blueberry muffins and wi-fi. The laundromat in Milbridge where we had to do laundry also had wi-fi. The owners were very kind and helpful in locating places of interest. If you are a golfer the people at Barren View golf were great and accepting as were the folks at the Baptist church of Cherryfield. We really hated to leave!
We are always looking for the perfect get away and have found it here! The view was so serene during the day and the starry nights, spectacular! Except for clammers way off shore in early morning (not a sound) and deer checking us out from the surrounding woodlands, we were on our own. The home has a spacious, cozy living room and a great fireplace we used on a rainy day. Galley kitchen is adequate, bed comfy. Bring your own drinking water although two gallons were ready to start us off. The front porch and Adirondack chairs were our total refuge...we started and ended each day out there. Hope to return next year!

Well worth the Money..
This property was beautiful. The pictures do not do justice to the view from the porch.. Watching the tides from here was just amazing. The fireplace was a plus. We had a couple of cold rainy days (in the in of June) but all was well we just stayed in next to the toasty fire, and there was plenty of wood supplied.. For the asking price on this rental you simply cannot go wrong. It is a little over 1 hr to Bar Harbor which was also a plus because way less traffic and no noise.. The owners were very nice, took the time to meet us there, show us around and left us alone for the duration of our vacation.. If I had one very minor complaint it would be the lack of pots and pans. We like to cook in and did not really have an adequate amount of regular pots. However it was such a great place I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves the peace and quiet.. I would also recommend to a friend..

Great place for a quiet vacation.
The cottage and property are just as represented on the VRBO site. Very secluded, no neighbors in view from the property and a great view of the ocean. We really enjoyed watching the tides come and go. Lots of deer, rabbits and a few seals at high tide. Rod & Lucile provided us with all the comforts of home including a well stocked pantry to assist in making dinners much tastier.
The owners met us on our arrival, even though we had traffic issues and were a bit late. They are very knowledgeable about the area and gave us lots of ideas for things to see and do.
The cottage location is great for seeing everything from Acadia to Campobello. For us, some of the nicest things to see are the many nature preserve hiking trails that wind out to the ocean. There are two on Great Wass Island, one on Pidgeon Hill Rd and two in the Cutler area. All of them are fantastic places to have the ocean all to yourself.
When we return to the area, we will definitely reserve the cottage again and hopefully spend more time talking with Rod & Lucile!

Awesome Experience !
We stayed at the Downeast Victorian Cottage for 1 week in August. It was such an awesome experience for us! We are city dwellers in Ohio that love the rocky coastline of Maine. This was our first time to experience living "out in the country" though. We loved it! --- I should say I also realized what a lot of work must go into maintaining such a large property ( 20 acres I believe)- but it sure was fun to enjoy country / seaside living without the responsibility of caring for so much land. I have never experienced this kind of privacy anywhere I have lived in my life!
My favorite thing to do was to sit in the chairs down by the water right after breakfast and soak in the sun and the view. There is a continuous breeze off the water and even when the sun is beating down you never feel hot. ( Sadly I write this as I am back in Ohio where the temp hit 90 today and the humidity and lack of air movement are oppressive) I am already thinking about returning to Maine next summer :)
Rod was great! He showed us around and provided us with everything we needed including pre-made ice in the freezer and a 2.5 gallon of spring water. The kitchen was very clean with good working appliances and all the basics. There is a big TV upstairs and one in the bedroom also- but honestly we did not even turn them on. We were either gone exploring the area or outside most of the time. We did bring our laptop computer and had no problems getting connected to the WIFI.
Well, I do not want to say too many more good things or it may not be available next time I want to book it :) - Great place- Thanks so much for sharing your cottage Rod and Lucille !
My wife and I enjoyed our stay at the Harrington property. The views were picturesque daily. Just sitting watching the tide go in and out was just what we were looking for. Rod and Lucille were the nicest couple, and the perfect hosts. The property was very comfortable and clean. We used the location as a home base. After sightseeing all day it was nice to come back and light a fire, and truely relax. Highly recommended.
Very private, with magnificent views made our stay peaceful and relaxing. Outside fire ring would be a nice addition. Our only disappointment was the lack of Wi-Fi. The owners, Lucile and Rob, could not have been more congenial and helpful.
Rod and Lucile have shared a lovely piece of tranquil space. My partner and I were appreciative of the personal greeting during check-in and how wonderfully accommodating they were to our unexpected early arrival. The cottage and property are even more lovely in person, than shown from the photos. The bed was wonderfully comfortable (so grateful!), property clean throughout, and kitchen stocked with all needs thoughtfully anticipated. The cool temps at night allowed for us to have a fire in the fireplace each night, and we were grateful for the stocked firewood. For future visitors, I would highlight the internet limitations which are explained under the amenities. A hotspot was available for the expressed purpose to check email or limited usage, noting that streaming is not an option. Bring your own WiFi if this is important to you. Local highlights for food include Paisley Loon for breakfast, lunch and good coffee; Knottie Lobster for lobster rolls; Vasquez for Mexican food (generous portions!), and if you're traveling north to Machias, we highly recommend Bad Little Brewery. Don't forget to visit Frank E. Woodworth Preserve for a beautiful, easy hike.
Thanks again, to Rod and Lucile for such a wonderful experience.
Pretty, comfortable, cozy house. Private, gorgeous land w/water and sky view. Perfect location.
Wish we could have stayed all summer and enjoyed this house and view and the perfect location to travel around and visit all this area has to offer. Rod and Lucille are lovely people and very helpful with questions.
The cottage is beautiful, comfortable, and owned by a terrific couple. We thoroughly enjoyed our ten days and would heartedly recommend this property to anyone looking for a quiet, secluded vacation.
My husband and I loved our week on Flat Bay in Harrington. The property was beautiful and secluded. The cottage was perfect. Rod and Lucile are great hosts! There was a library of movies that were available to watch if we weren't outside enjoying the view of the bay, watching the tide come in with a cup of coffee in the morning and watching it go out with a glass of wine in the evening. There were plenty of opportunities for hiking and enjoying the Maine coast line. We were close to Acadia and Bar Harbor and enjoyed our day trips to these places. We would love to return and enjoy another relaxing stay!
Rod and Lucille have set up this charming cottage to be such a relaxing getaway - from plenty of towels sets to a pantry stocked with all the basics to logs in the fireplace ready to light. It made it so easy and comfortable to arrive and immediately settle in. Whatever we needed, it was there (e.g. hair dryer, paper clip, pie server, pepper grinder, etc.). They are gracious and responsive hosts who truly care about you enjoying your time there. The cottage is cozy with a spacious feel in a very secluded spot. We loved sitting in the Adirondack chairs on the porch, eating meals there, reading, and watching the tide come in and go out. We’re so happy we found it and look forward to returning!
Wish I could have spent the whole summer here! It’s a lovely cottage—very spacious and peaceful and has everything you could need. The WiFi hotspot is also a huge plus! I work remotely during the week, so being able to hop on work chats and have reliable internet is super important (and not always a given when traveling!). This spot is also very close to some great walks and hikes outside of Acadia (though, I’d recommend checking out the national park hikes near winter harbor—way less crowded that on Mt. Desert :) )
This is the best, just what we needed. It was so nice to see that it stayed almost the same. ( except for the good changes) As always it was great talking to you. We do wish we had had more time to talk. Your place has spoiled us on looking for a place to retire. The whole process was very nice.
We always try to visit Harrington during the full moon as the tidal shifts can be so dramatic. This property did not disappoint! By night, the stars were brilliant, and the moon a shimmering beacon across Flat Bay. By day, the grounds - 20 acres of well-maintained woods, fields and bay shoreline - provided opportunity for exploration and observation of nature, including a variety of birds, and deer. The cottage is comfortable, clean, equipped with all the basic necessities - lovingly built and decorated. The water views from the kitchen, dining area and the front porch are quite spectacular at any time of the day. This is a perfect romantic getaway as well as a base of operations situated close to many area activities: rewarding hiking trails, scenic bike paths, Acadia, Campobello, and much more. We stayed here during the Covid 19 pandemic and found it easy to remain quarantined. But we know from previous trips that there are cute shops here and there, farm stands, a Wild Blueberry Festival, antiquing opportunities, and other enjoyable local community events all summer long. This is not a trip for folks seeking glitz, glam and 5-star restaurants. This is a place to reset your heart, to learn anew how to breathe and to feast yourself on unspoiled natural beauty, as well a few local lobsters! Our hosts, Rod and Lucile, were so friendly and helpful. They clearly love their property and we are so grateful that they decided to share it with strangers! We hope to return in the near future.
